Coming Catastrophe for Kirjogi

22 March 2023
(Article originally published by Novaera Geopolitical Report)

Is Kirjogi headed unavoidably for catastrophe? Yes, argues Lech Stenkowski, associate professor of political science at the University of Novaera, in his newly released book on the subject, Brittle Empire. Stenkowski, a specialist in comparative politics and political economy who wrote his dissertation on the economic background of Asuckian unification movements of the 1920s, has long had an interest in the politics of Kirjogi, which he believes serves as an ominous warning for leaders unable to adapt to the changing conditions of modern life.

“Kirjogi is a paradigmatic case study of a regime that has long outlived its socioeconomic relevance,” he said in an interview, “It’s a fascinating case of a mismatch between a state’s political apparatus and its underlying material conditions, and therefore it can be an instructive example for researchers interested in the causes of political dysfunction.”

What is the underlying ‘mismatch’ crippling the Kirjogi state? Stenkowksi identifies a few culprits, but the chief difficulty is the coupling of a premodern political form and modernizing economic conditions.

“Kirjogi purports to be an essentially feudal state, a regime-type called ‘Haschag’ that combines a corporate organization of social life with a polycentric state, dividing powers between theocratic, representative, and bureaucratic institutions,” Stenkowski explains. “These are basically vestigial organs of the old empire that was killed during the URSC and resurrected following the Restoration in 1979.”

The URSC stands for the ‘United Republican Socialist Confederation,’ a socialist regime that was installed in 1961, three years after the deposition of the Veschalo dynasty. Following a successful counterrevolution in 1979, the URSC was deposed in Kirjogi but endured, in some form, in nine constituent republics that remained at war with the new right-wing regime, whose rule is often referred to simply as ‘the Restoration period.’

“The basic problem is that this complicated power-sharing apparatus evolved over centuries as a way of managing competing interests in a premodern society,” Stenkowksi went on. “The Pursanvitali (the institutional clergy) served as an educated elite that maintained a proto-national unity among the old, effectively independent princely states. The confederal structure allowed the empire to exert influence over diverse ethno-religious minorities that otherwise might have asserted their independence. All of this was possible in a largely agricultural society based on relations of personal fealty to an imperial suzerain. Local aristocratic elites could maintain their privileges by bargaining with the imperial government, accepting a few token concessions in exchange for integration into the empire’s economic network and relative toleration.”

But, Stenkowksi explained, this is no longer the case.

“This sort of arrangement made sense in the seventeenth century, and it allowed the Haschag to incorporate neighbors relatively peacefully, rapidly expanding beyond the boundaries of Kirjogi itself and consolidating an impressive empire. The problem is that this system begins to break down under conditions of industrialization and urbanization, when the old aristocratic system of patronage gives way to modern mass politics, and, with it, the rise of nationalism and socialism. By the early twentieth century, you see a shift in power from the old landowning aristocracy to new, educated, urban elites, both in Kirjogi and its subject nations, who begin to discuss new ideas to replace the old imperial organization, ranging from ethnic separatism to establishment of a democratic confederacy. This is obviously quite threatening to the theocratic basis of the Kirjogi state, which is deeply wedded to the imperial power structure.”

Unlike some of his academic peers in Kirjogi, who see the failure of the URSC as the death of a viable political left in the country, Stenkowski believes that the legacy of the second half the twentieth century is a series of unsettled questions, to which the present regime has no answers.

“It’s widely believed that Kirjogi is a case study in successful, thorough counterrevolution,” Stenkowski, a left-leaning Labor supporter, began, “In 1961, a coalition of ethnoreligious minorities and an urban elite in Kirjogi installed a socialist regime and adopted a program of social modernization and secularization. This was never accepted as legitimate by the majority of the population, and, within two decades, a right-wing order was again in charge. The thing is, they couldn’t exactly put the genie back in the bottle. The landed aristocracy was never completely restored (though that’s a subject for another time), the imperial throne is vacant, and the old manorial order has been replaced by a form of guild socialism. Most importantly, there are no longer any local princes that can negotiate with the central government: subject states are effectively republics, whose demands for autonomy now take democratic forms that are unacceptable to the imperial government. ‘The Restoration’ has been so violent and thorough precisely because it is in fact very frail, hence the title of my book, ‘Brittle Empire.’”

Stenkowsi admits, the official ideology of the counterrevolutionary regime is uniquely self-aware about the material constraints it faces, yet he believes they are fighting a losing battle.

“These people aren’t idiots,” he continues, “They fully understand that they’re an untimely regime – dinosaurs, to put it bluntly. So one of the key goals of the Restoration has been to reverse-engineer the political economy of the old empire. For example, the government has been promoting a policy of neo-agrarianism, ‘Geriflisi’ or ‘back-to-the-land,’ trying to revitalize rural life and encourage agricultural development. This was mildly successful in the late-twentieth century at achieving its goals, namely encouraging ‘traditional values’ and restoring the peasant powerbase of the Pursanvitali, as well as raising the fertility rate. The problem is that this can only go so far before it begins to run into problems: the swelling population of the countryside means that the per-family acreage of small farms is shrinking, resulting in a decline in rural earnings and wages. The guild system made this sustainable for a time, but it can’t work forever.”

That reference to ‘fertility rates’ broaches one of the most significant – but also taboo – concerns in Kirjogi political discourse.

“Demographic anxiety is one of the largest issues facing the Haschag. In the past, the ethnoreligious core of Kirjogi could dominate its neighbors, because they constituted a single cohesive national actor and a majority, or at least plurality, of the empire’s population. The arid lands of eastern principalities bordering Kimina or Falkasia just could not sustain the same masses of people as the river valleys in southwestern Kirjogi. That’s changing now, as declining living standards in Kirjogi are discouraging childbearing, while these eastern republics are growing and urbanizing. Neo-agrarianism resulted in a temporary boost to the birthrate, but they’re now running up against economic limits. The regime doesn’t want to dump off the excess rural population in cities, because they fear a repetition of 1961, when the urban nodes of the country were taken over by a revolutionary minority.”

Stenkowski admits that the Haschag is attempting to address this problem, yet he doubts the effectiveness of their available options.

“Large-scale investments and subsidies in rural improvements have had an effect, especially within the last decade. The government has also begun encouraging small-scale independent artisans to move to medium-sized towns, as an alternative to the industrial mass-production that they believe set the stage for the ’61 Revolution. But I’m not sure that even they believe this will avert a coming crisis. The fact of the matter is that the gap between Kirjogi and the separatist republics is declining, and there isn’t much the Haschag can do to reverse this short of opening the floodgates to global capital and urbanization.”

Yet this is precisely what Stenkowski believes is most dangerous about the present situation: an unavoidable shift in the balance of power that will produce political instability.

“The Haschag is in a difficult position,” he says ominously, “For ideological reasons, they cannot concede to the demands for autonomy in these eastern republics. Too much political capital, too much of the regime’s legitimacy, depends upon ‘restoring’ the legacy of the old empire, with its territorial integrity intact. On the other hand, it becomes likelier, day-by-day, that these republics will formally secede and have the means to back this up. So, with the stakes existential and a narrowing window of opportunity, I think it’s likely that the regime will try to settle the issue by brute force. We’ve been fortunate enough to see peace in the Haschag since 1986… I should qualify that as a relative peace, a cessation of large-scale hostilities. Of course, there has been terrible violence in the intervening years. But my point is that this is a delicate balance that is not really sustainable, and it’s becoming increasingly apparent – most of all, to the leaders of the regime themselves – that economic reforms are not going to avert this crisis.

“In 2019, Evrit Seshti, the Kirjogi prime director (effectively, head of the administrative bureaucracy), said during a press conference that the Haschag must ‘permanently resolve the question [of the separatist republic’s] within the present generation's lifetime.’ That signaled that the regime no longer accepts the legal limbo that has existed since 1986, but it also implies that a growing segment of the power structure also no longer believes that some kind of gradual reintegration of these republics is a serious possibility.”

So, is Kirjogi headed for implosion? Stenkowski is unsure.

“The Haschag is certainly not going to concede the issue. It would mean the death of the regime, one that claims to trace itself back to antiquity, or at least, realistically, to the eleventh century. That story, is, of course, a fanciful legend that obscures discontinuity and rupture, but it is one that Kirjogi take seriously, and the legacy of a millennium of history weighs heavily on the regime. So, if they will not capitulate, and peaceful solutions are off the table, a re-litigation of the fallout from the URSC seems likely. Only, things are different than they were in 1986, when the last civil war resulted in an armistice. The separatist republics are much stronger, and they have much more international sympathy. They’ve had time to prepare their own militaries as well, and it’s possible they will be able to call upon foreign support. Kirjogi’s illiberal conduct hasn’t quite pushed it into international pariah status, but it will leave the regime much more isolated. This is a much riskier gamble, but it’s one I believe the regime will have to take. Unfortunately, a catastrophe – whether tomorrow or in a decade – is probably on its way.”

Asked whether there is any course left to avert a resumption of large-scale hostilities, Stenkowski frowned, evidently dismayed.

"Honestly, I can't see it. The URSC, while suffering from problems of its own, was at least a serious attempt at offering this diverse region some kind of confederal structure, which might have been able to balance the needs for autonomy and modernization. If something like that existed today, it would be difficult but perhaps not impossible to keep these competing interests united under one roof. But the socialist form that regime took was an aberration that was never going to be viewed as fully legitimate, and the scars it left behind have meant that no middle-of-the-road, democratic compromise could be worked out. Strangely enough, given my own left-liberal inclinations, I think that a true restoration of the monarchy could have preserved a certain kind of unity, since it might have avoided some of the brutal, homogenizing effects of impersonal mass politics the country now faces. But, even if that were in the offing, it is likely too little and too late. The current regime is insufficiently democratic, but also not a true restoration: it's the bastard child of rushed compromises from the 1980s, and it's too sclerotic to navigate the current crisis without some profound constitutional changes that I couldn't possibly anticipate."

Stenkowski's book, Brittle Empire: From Revolution to Ruination, is available for order online now.

The Prime Minister Cabinet - The Royal Comission Against Discrimination and for Gender Equality

The RCADGE is a Comission that depends directly from the Prime Minister having as its main aim to function as the watch dog for situations that can be contrary to the Human Rights such as xenophobia, racism or homophobia between other deviant behaviours. It is also of the ultmost importance for the Government to continue to foment equality between the wages variations between men and women in certain sectors. For that the Government will be presenting a project of law to Parliament in order to enforce quotas, when possible, in the public sector.
Concerning the discreminatory problems that may exist in the United Kingdom, such behaviours became anti-constitutional in its last revision. These new articles are now if effect after royal accent.
The whole structure of the United Kingdom resides in the unity of its People and the Government sees that issue as a top priority.

the government decides to invest in the new highway between Rezna, Czewno and Pozla

Written by Pawel Blazek

The Minister of Infrastructures, Konstantyn Juszczak, announced a highway project that connects the eastern Cities of Rezna, Czewno and Pozla to increase the mobility, the commerce and the infrastructure of the eastern provinces. The eastern provinces have long been less economically developed than the western provinces and this Gap always existed and increased during the nationalist dictatorship ( 1923-1970 ). During the Dictatorship the east was considered less economically important than the West, so the Dictatorship heavily invested into the western industries. The government is currently searching for a company that can carry out the project, even foreign companies are being considered to complete the project. The project is expected to cost approximately 48 million Likvas and is expected to be completed by February 2025. Many Economists predicts that this new Highway will help the eastern provinces to develop economically

Spring Shower In The Sky: The interception of Object
Undisclosed Location

On television and online, a recap of intermittent footage of five aircraft can be vaguely seen, sihlouetted by their blue night lights. The next video clip showed a mass of flares are shot out around, displaying an unusally festive shower of white, orange, and teal illuminations that faded away as a searing white line beamed nearlystraight up into the sky. The last video clip showed what resembled fireworks of a flash of pale blue with brief red sparkles.

Filler content started with real footage of a Tavlyrian seabird CGI imagery of ancient vessels sailing across the sea with the help of starry sky navigation, reflecting Czelland's more venturous progenitors. This is timelapsed, showing the dawn of aviation and the airborne vehicles of yesteryear, transistioning into Czelland's modern aircraft. It is concluded with a return to the same species of seabird with a phoned-in caw.

Mere hours following the sorties, news coverage made it to television and the internet alike. News reporter Katia Drzalla takes front with her backdrop being the shuffling of flightline personnel and equippment, complimenting the gleam of a new day off the Mrikenna Bay's coast with honest work. She seeks to shine light, with the assistance of one of the participants, on a lesser known activity from areospace forces- high-altitude combat air patrol. Seen beside her is a pilot in his physical training uniform, faceless from the camera's censorship software. Her mysterious guest wears a more conventional flight suit, having had the chance to groom himself and little else. She sports trendy mild cold weather clothing.

KD: "Greetings, Czelland! This is Katia Drzalla, bringing you special coverage of following last night's breaking event. Here, we have the flight leader from last night's daring mission, [REDACTED] callsign 'Slalom' as our special guest. All you."

RS: "Pleasant morning today. Im going straight to sleep after this, hah. Care to join [me], Katia?"

KD: "Oh my. [incoherent laughing]

RS: "We were informed of a rogue satellite that needed to be engaged in short time that, left alone, could pose danger to many. Talk is cheap and takes too long."

KD: "Hmm. A man of action, I see.

RS: "Theres no other way."

KD: "Well, whats it like to fly one of these newer dual engined jets?

RS: "It is a rush. Harder on body and mind than the singles, but little compares to being one with these planes. With most things, fast is fun."

KD: "As for the missile, some are already expressing concern of the consequences of the explosion"

RS: "Flares were sort of a formality. This was no combat situation, but no chances were taken; This missile made to minimize debris and work in space. Functionally, it is more of a spaceship that works once, as it has vernier thrusters; The light show it made was pretty, yes?

KD: "It certainly was. On the topic of fallout, what can be said about those that will say this is a weapon of terror. What could you say about this?

RS: "People fear what they cannot control. Even moreso than our planes, this [high-altitude intercept vehicle]was something for out people to look at the sky in awe and certainty amid current political fear sensations. That said, I hope goodwill [with neighboring countries] persists."

KD: "That was very wise of you"

RS: "Ha. I learned something in school"

KD: "Funny. Did you get your nickname 'Slalom' there? I was going to guess it came from you doing something bad in the YSR"

RS: Not exactly. I have a driving history of sorts. A story for a different time"

RS: "It may be delayed, but should be able to have a parade to commemorate our tenth anniversary since the start of our defiance. Care to join me?"

KD: "Hmm. I dont know."

RS: "You could take rear in a two-seater. Great view for news coverage. Ill share my story too."

KD: Maybe. Well, there you have it. Next up, we will be covering the newest teen trend for studying- "micronapping". Placebo or Proven? Stay tuned.

Faith Links

By Ute Gorovica

Neuhausen, Zurich, NE

The Gepursana-Christian Conference was recently held at the University of Aldirma’s Institute for Interreligious Studies in Kirjogi. Several clerical and important faith leaders from around the world were invited to attend, as they are every year that the Conference has been held. Archbishop Ladislav Bricelj, the head of the Orthodox Church in Neu Engollon, chose to attend this year to represent the Orthodox Church, and ultimately the faithful of Neu Engollon and all of Western Madurin. I sat down with the Archbishop to discuss how the Conference went, faith in the Confederacy, and the future of the Orthodox Church.

“Your Grace, I want to thank you for sitting down to talk.”

“Of course. It’s my pleasure. Any light I can bring to spirituality is a small victory in pushing back the darkness, as they say.”

“Yes, of course. You have been in the Church for some time now, to have risen up to your position.”

“Ha. I’ve done my time in the trenches. I started as a young lad in my early twenties. I have done the Lord’s work for a long time.”

“Was it easy work?”

“Well, not often, no. As you know, Ute, the life of a Slav…a devout Slav, in northern Neu Engollon, is never easy. While there’s some tolerance among most Neu Engollians, it’s not universal. Not just towards Slavs, but anyone who takes religion seriously. Christianity is put to the test every day, and I think that’s certainly intentional by the Lord.”

“It’s the Lord’s work. That’s sort of cliche, your Grace.”

“Yes, I know, but it is, especially in the unique circumstance that our congregations find themselves in. Neu Engollon has been an overwhelmingly secular nation for centuries. There of course were some clashes early on as the Catholic ethnic Gauls and Romans dominated, then the Lutheran Teutons, and then…as religious influence in the central and southern cantons began to fade fast due to complicated reasons I won’t get into now, it was more ethnic in persecution. The Slavs have never been an accepted official ethnic group of the Confederacy. We are the fourth largest ethnic group in the nation, and by mid-century, it is expected we will be the third, surpassing the Gaul ethnics. Slavs in Neu Engollon are also statistically the most spiritual and identifying with an organized faith.”

“Orthodoxy.”

“Yes. I know this is sounding rather political, and that’s because it is. It makes it hard for people to express themselves spiritually, when the most religious group is also synonymous with one of the most historically persecuted groups. Spreading the faith means going up against a wall of ethnically bred indifference, or even ignorance, at its worst.”

“But you are known for trying to reach out beyond the Slavic community…”

“Yes, thank you. We are all the Lord’s children. Calling our neighbors from other ethnic groups ‘godless heathens’ does nothing but further widen the bitter divide. The opposite of what we work so hard towards…”

“To bring more Neu Engollians into the Church.”

“Yes, and we have had moderate success in bringing more into the fold from beyond the Slavic community. We are seeing a slow growth in the faithful. Even if it’s not Orthodoxy, however people look to God and worship, as long as they’re doing it, that’s all I really care about. It’s tough enough to keep young Slavs interested in the Church, let alone reach out to other groups.”

“So then, Tomas Schleffinger and the Holy Movement, that is acceptable to you, because they profess a strong belief in God?”

“I should have known you would bring that up. No. Nothing about the so-called Holy Movement had anything to do with the positive force in Christianity. Quite the opposite. Those people did everything to destroy benevolent belief, Christianity, and respect for humanity itself.”

“Do you think that Tomas Schleffinger deserved to die as he did?”
[Editor’s Note: Schleffinger was assassinated by an unknown Slavic assailant during massive riots in Neuhausen last year. Much of the riots over the past few years against Slavs and calling for ethnic genocide was perpetrated by Schleffinger’s Holy Movement, as evidenced by investigations by Pine Park.]

“I don’t condone violence, but he certainly got back the energy he put out, didn’t he? When you build up that vortex of hate, it’s bound to suck you in and destroy you. Just as his hero, Harold Borinkrijn did over in Glisandia. He will meet his fate too, officially at the hands of the Glisandian government, I hear later this year. Just to answer your question before you ask it, no I don’t condone the Glisandians wanting to execute him, but it’s not like they would listen to my protests. They have a different way of doing things there in Eastern Tavlyria, for sure.”

“That has been a bizarre episode of Teremaran history. It’s unfortunate that such radical evangelicals had so much influence.”

“Yes, that it caught on here of all places, even if a small, very misguided segment of our country, was…well, disappointing. Surprising too, for such a mostly secular nation. Let’s be thankful most of the madness stayed over there.”

“Speaking of Tavlyria, let’s talk about Gepursana and the Conference.”

“Yes, please, I would love to move on to a much more pleasant subject. It was lovely, and interesting, and odd, and awkward at times, but ultimately worth it. Every time.”

“Awkward?”

“Challenging, let’s say. I think the Gepursana Conference put Christians on the spot a bit to question ourselves and our beliefs, but that can’t be a bad thing. It’s a good challenge. It wasn’t done out of malice, but rather true curiosity. What makes a Christian, and what makes a Gepursana follower, and how are they similar, and how do they diverge.”

“How do they?”

“You don’t have enough article space for that answer. They’re monotheistic, and share a lot of the same morals and values, and that’s enough. In the end, spirituality is spirituality.”

“I thought there were three Gods in Gepursana?”

“Ekat. Pascina and Natful are more manifestations of Ekat, from all I gathered, but after two Conferences under my belt, I’m still not sure. To be honest, there’s an otherworldliness to Gepursana that I don’t know I will ever fully understand. Something that takes a lifetime of theological study. I don’t have that, as I have devoted my energy to Orthodox Christianity. But it’s interesting. It has its place and it motivates its followers to do wonderful things, hence it couldn’t be bad, in my opinion.”

“So, you’re fine if Orthodox Neu Engollians convert to Gepursana?”

“You’re jesting, but yes, any path to God…or Ekat, cannot be a bad path.”

“So you say that, but do the followers of Gepursana also feel that way? At no point did you feel that the hierarchical clerics of Gepursana were trying to prove the superiority of their doctrine over Christianity?”

“Whoa! I will admit that one might sense that from hearing Sakun Sichek and his brethren speak, but I think that it is more that they want to establish that Gepursana has an equal place among world religions. It’s no less a faith than any other, not that it is superior.”

“Do you believe that?”

“Do I believe that is the case, or that that is what Brother Sichek believes?”

“Do you believe in that notion?”

“Of course I do. I think the followers of Ekat have an equal place and deserve an equal share at the Table of Faith along with Muslims, Jews, Pagans, all Christians, and really most faiths…”

“Satanists?”

“I think that’s a conversation for another time.”

“Do you think that all your fellow Archbishops feel the same way? Orthodoxy has gotten a bad reputation as being inflexible and non-inclusive.”

“We’re definitely working on that. We have not been the most consistent. We have our own ecumenical conferences to organize where we can iron out our differences within our Church.
My fellow Archbishops Martin Szeged, the head of the Church in Taranima; Andrej Ritic, head of the Austrak Church; and Abal Saliba, Metropolitan of Ardala, for the Kiminan Church, were all in attendance with me, and we had several discussions that we would like to explore further.”

“Such as who has claim to the rightful Patriarch?”

“Ah, yes. Foremost of important discussions. It is an ongoing topic of debate for the different Orthodox orders in Teremara. It’s a complicated, political issue that I’m not sure can get settled in my lifetime. However, it is not so contentious among us, as we are in general harmonious agreement on most issues facing our Church. If we can settle and unify under a council without one reigning Patriarch, it is sufficient.”

“Were the other Archbishops and Metropolitans in agreement with you on how to accept Gepursana into the spiritual discussion and make a bridge to modern Orthodoxy?”

“I couldn’t say for sure, but I believe so, yes. Perhaps a better question for them, though. That was the bulk of our discussions amongst us, but I don’t know that we ever came to a consensus.”

“That seems rather cagey compared to what you said earlier. That everyone is equal to the Table. Do you believe that or not?”

“Oh, of course. I can speak only for myself and my friends. We’re not wanting to find a new bogeyman in Gepursana. Or old, if you talk to the Kiminans or Falkasians. We’re looking for an ally. There are those who believe in the power of religion to restore humanity and heal, and those who twist it for their own ends and make people suffer in their hunger for power. We saw it with Borinkrijn in Glisandia, the QLA in Qasifya, GLO in South Gragastavia, and…Schleffinger here in our country. We need allies to resist those who warp religion for their own evil purposes. Whether they call to God, Allah, or Ekat, it matters not. What matters is what is true in their hearts and how they treat their fellow man, woman and child.”

“Well said, Your Grace. Perhaps we can wrap it up here at this convenient point? Thank you for speaking with us.”

“Thank you for inviting me. This helped me to mentally digest the Conference, so I thank you for that.”

NEWS FROM THE COLLECTIVE

After the rousing success of the 2016-2020 Five Year Plan, a meticulous economic agenda which saw increases in both heavy and light industrial output by a factor of ten, the Free Socialist Collective's industrial czar Juan Rosario announced that a new Five Year Plan would be enacted beginning in 2023 that would see an increased focus on consumer goods production and automotive engineering. Junior ministers Eduardo Castillo, Julian Narvaez and Catalina Vespera have been promoted to the executive committee for industrial production and resource management to help facilitate the growth of the new plan. The initiative marks the third major planning agenda marked out during the tenure of Secretary-General Antón Félix Chavarria de la Vega's government and the nineteenth industrial planning platform overall since the Free Socialist Collective began implementing the strategy for economic growth.

"After the unmitigated success of our last five year plan, this new Five Year Initiative will help the Collective realize its massive economic potential in the fields of light industry and consumer goods production," Rosario said at a televised press conference Friday. "Every step forward that we take will make our Collective stronger and more independent. Our aversion to meddling with the bourgeoise capitalist world makes the success of these industrial designs imperative."

Understanding the labyrinth of mechanisms necessary to make our complex and robust economy tick over is a complicated business, according to Eduardo Castillo on Friday. Addressing the difficulties associated with making economic policy for both the health of the national economy and the individual workers participating therein, Castillo specified the Collective's commitment to workers' rights as part of the new bargaining agreement. "With our new industrial plan ready to be spun into motion, we can focus on making sure the laborers in our workforce are receiving just compensation for their immense talents and immeasurable efforts to make the Free Socialist Collective a beacon of equality and humanitarian pride across Teremara."

Beyond the technical aspects of the plan involving the establishment of work quotas in more than two dozen economic fields of expertise, the current committee assignments are historic for their introduction of the first woman ever to be part of an industrial output committee. Catalina Vespera, a graduate of the Universidad Técnica de Adoración in the capital city, has spent more than two decades working to bring down barriers for women in government bureaucratic management, having first ascended to the post of education czar in the De La Vega government, Vespera has spent more time in government than any other woman since Emilia Valentino, the first female comptroller in 1946. Vespera has been honored as a national hero by the Secretary-General.

"For years, I have worked to bring down barriers for women in government, proving once and for all that Gran Ventana is a true beacon of equality and opportunity for all people, regardless of their gender identity or their race or creed. In stepping into this role, I am committing myself not only to the economic progress of the Free Socialist Collective, but I am also setting an example for young women throughout Gran Ventana that every opportunity remains open to them. it is not a responsibility I take likely to be sure, but it is a responsibility that I have long yearned to take upon myself."

A Legend Sails On
On a Sea of Beer

By Jean Marc Charjan

Burgunden, Zurich, NE

The brewing world is in mourning today at the loss of a great one. Possibly the Greatest Of All Time, some might venture to say. Burgunden Breueries reported the sudden death of Hoppy Jensen, longtime Master Brewer for the ages old brewery in the heart of the largest city in the Confederacy.
Said CEO Erica Toft:
“It was very uncharacteristic of him, but he actually stepped in to save the life of a younger, apprentice brewer. He is a legend gone and we are left in pieces without his guidance.”

David Toft, former CEO of BB, current CEO of beverage giant Terembev, and Erica’s brother, only had a simple sentence to say:
“The long nightmare is over.”

Mr. Toft and Jensen notoriously did not get along, and Jensen’s antics pushed their relation further to the breaking point often. David often threatened to give Jensen the boot, but agreements signed by Hoppy and Jan Toft, David and Erica's now deceased father, prevented David from following through on his threats.

A witness staffer said,
“He gave his life to save Rolf, and then fell into the vat himself. Being Hoppy, he tried to drink his way out, but even Hoppy couldn’t drink his way out of this one.”
The vat’s volume was several hundred gallons, but word has it that Hoppy was able to bring the level down some in his consumption before succumbing and sinking to the bottom.
Another co-worker remarked,
“He died doing what he loved. Consuming ridiculous volumes of beer. Saving Rolf was just a bonus.”

Jensen, besides being an accomplished brewer, was also the top leader of Neu Engollian dwile flonking teams, leading them to victory time and again.
He loved attending the Alpen View Brew Festival, although in later years, David Toft did everything in his power to keep Jensen away from the fest and attempted to put a halt to the usual multitude of international incidents Hoppy frequently perpetrated.

Some of Hoppy's antics and epic pranks were documented in the film, All Brewed Up, about the Neu Engollian brewing industry, which brought Jensen even more notoriety outside of Teremara.

The Servonaris, a southern Neu Engollian rock band, often were in attendance to some of Jensen's more over the top pranks, and are a mainstay of the AVBF entertainment stages. Longtime bassist of the Servonaris, Tony Andalo, said:
“He was the most epically weirdest dude I have ever had the honor to party with. Rest in Brew, Hoppy.”

Hoppy Jensen will be laid to rest in a giant barrel at Burgunden Municipal Cemetery this Saturday.

Give Some Planes, Take Some Planes

By Rosen “Ross” Reffet

Geneva, NE

In a deal in line with the NEDF plan to revamp and reorganize their structure, they will sign a deal with Ćaeva of Asucki to receive several CA-11 Chickadee aircraft. The number and breakdown of variants the NEDAF will ultimately take possession of was not disclosed to the general public.

This comes after a recent deal with the Republic of Asucki for Neu Engollon to sell off the remaining stock of NEF-39 Gripens that were in service in the Air Force Reserves to the Republic to stock their air force.

While the Gripen and Chickadee are comparable, the advantage that anonymous sources in the NEDF say, is that the Gripen is no longer in production while Ćaeva is going strong and it will be easier to access parts and likely a deal will be reached where the parts for the CA-11s can be produced domestically.

That being said, it is likely that the very same Ćaeva will take up manufacturing of the parts for the Gripens under license.

All in all it is a bit perplexing why the NEDAF did not just hang onto the Gripens, but when politics enters the mix, logic and reason can sometimes take a backseat. A fair trade with both nations satisfied and we will call it a win.

The nomenclature for the Confederacy owned CA-11 Chickadees will conform to the NEDAF system of all past owned aircraft. It will be retitled the NEF-11 and the new familiar name, while not officially announced yet, is likely to be Mesci, the Frandit translation for Chickadee.

Need for Speed

By Jean Marc Charjan

Schwartzgarten, Grisbenden, NE

Schwyz Logiztek announced that they will be part of the Teremaran team submitting F1 cars, drivers, techs and engineers to the upcoming Grand Prix of Cira in Azura. Along with Schwyz, several other Teremaran companies’ personnel will participate in the endeavor, including Voron Auto of Falkasia, Ćaeva of Asucki, and Kikreni Technics of Czelland.
In addition, Terembev, the beverage conglomerate that is headquartered in Burgunden, will be the main sponsor of the team.

The drivers were announced to be Markus MacGibbon of Port Scaig, Greater Orcadia, and Darian Rochefort of Touloux, Gaul.

Sports in Teremara has been a very controversial issue, with the Teremaran Unified Olympic team disbanding amidst squabbling and vowing to boycott future Olympics, and Neu Engollon pulling out of most international sport due to various reasons. This return to international competition for at least the Confederacy, as well as Jumnia, was evidenced by the Teremaran 8 Nation Rugby Invitational earlier this year.
It is a welcome sign to many that things might be turning a corner for Teremaran sports, but it is a small sign and should be taken with caution.

Gaul Hopes to Throw 'A Net' over Madurin

By Rosen “Ross” Reffet

Corsi Island, Terre des Gaules

The Gaulic military tested more missile defense systems this week off the south islands of Gaul. It is rumored that their new system is capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles and other such weapons that are being tested and brought into service by certain Tavlyrian powers.

The NEDF sent observers, with hopes of adapting the system should it work. A highly placed government source acknowledged that Schwyz Defense System engineers were part of the development team, and so the Confederacy is very invested in the success of the tests.

The waters surrounding the islands in the Southern Madurin Sea are very well trafficked by tourists and fishing fleets of several Madurinite nations, including Gaul and Neu Engollon. Several warnings were given about the tests in the days leading up and Gaulic coast guard boats were out to remind civilians not to stray into the testing zone.

The debris landed off the coast of Bezi and was recovered quickly. No word was given on the results of the tests, but they seem to be progressing well with no halt in sight.

The annual TSO military exercise is on the horizon, and missile defense might be a huge part of this year’s exercise, as well as a frequent topic of the TSO, which looks to expand soon with prospective members.

AIRPORT READY FOR SERVICE

By Todd Whitclyffe - Airburgh Reporter
Airburgh, Newplym

Modernized Airburgh airport publishes RFA for daily service within region and beyond

Airburgh Airport has completed its modernization project and this week published a Request For Applications (RFA) for air carriers to provide daily or twice daily service to the island.

Airport administrator Bruce McTavish spoke optimistically about new opportunities.
"The airport has been an important connection for our island ever since friendly military engineers upgraded it the major conflict 80 years ago from a basic airstrip to a functional airport with a control tower, radar, and hangars. We've all appreciated the weekly freight and mail flights and the charter flights that it has enabled. But the work of the last three years to upgrade and improve every aspect of our Airburgh Airport has set it up to be a gateway to the greater world, from Tavlyria to Madurin, and even beyond into other regions. I look forward to the expanded opportunities for tourism and commerce. We are even in a great position to be a refueling hub for flights that travel over the Tavlyrian sea."

The RFA notes that there are six commercial gates at the airport, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Black, and White, which each have the capacity for six daily arrivals and departures, permitting up to 36 commercial aircraft to visit the island each day. The gates are dual-purpose, set up to handle passengers or cargo, and the airport authorities are seeking to make at least 40% of the flights primarily cargo. There are additional financial opportunities for airlines that are willing to participate in a newspaper and mail exchange between Newplym, which has no internet connection or broadcast media, and their home nations.
McTavish also noted that the airport is accepting registrations for general aviation aircraft, and that there are still a few general aviation hangars open for interested individuals.

Interested nations and individuals should complete the application, copies of which are available in the administration office near gate Blue or through the weekly mail service, and return them to the same office. Inquiries regarding newspaper exchanges should be addressed to Colin Hamstead, the editor of the Newplym Messenger.

ENGINEERS DEVELOPING HYDROGEN ROCKETS

By Clyde Fisher - Spaceplex Reporter
Spaceplex, Newplym

Newplym engineers have begun work on hydrogen fueled rockets using H2 from renewably-powered electrolysis.

Robert Wilson, director of the Newplym rocket program, announced yesterday that work had begun on home-grown rocket technology using hydrogen fuel as a propellant.
"Work on our own national rocket technology is always desirable. The ammonium nitrate we make way out on Marken Island is great for our defensive missiles and sounding rockets - it's got a good shelf life and lots of thrust - but it doesn't have the specific impulse that is necessary to reach orbit.

Everyone knows we tried 30 years to get locally produced rye ethanol to the purity necessary for reliable combustion, but we never could quite get it there. But with our ever-growing renewable electric capacity from offshore and outcrop wind, wave generators, and our solar barges, it's a cinch to harness some of that to split water into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2), which we can then burn in our rocket engines for good thrust, efficiency, and minimal pollution, other than the NOX compounds that form any time temperatures get high. But by controlling our launch cadence, we can prevent any smog or acid rain issues on our scenic island.

"We've already started testing methods to control and increase thrust, and we are also expanding our fabrication and testing facilities in Spaceplex, so we can develop better and faster."

Wilson noted that immediate challenges include finding ways to efficiently chill gaseous hydrogen into its liquid phase, and to mitigate hydrogen diffusion, which can cause metals to become brittle and which can also result in bottled hydrogen escaping through the walls into the atmosphere.

SPRING MARATHON RESULTS

By Gregory Blake - Forest Basin Reporter
Center Station, Newplym
Fall registration now open.

The annual Spring Marathon, originally founded to celebrate the end of the planting season, was held on Saturday, following its usual route from the north of the island, over the Basin ridge and through the forest, then meandering through the plains and finishing at the southern coastline. Race director Thomas Bailey commented on the turnout and weather, saying,
"I'm pleased with our turnout this year, up nearly 10% from last year. We had 312 entrants in the half and full marathons combined, and 252 finishers. The cooler weather in the 40s was nice, and offset the typical ocean humidity we have. The crosswinds on the southern half through the plains sectors buffeted our runners a bit, but didn't slow them too much."

Gordon Stark, 30, won the men's marathon in 2:34:14 after pulling away from last year's champion Matthew McGill, 32, and Victor Swanson, 28, another marathon vet. McGill finished in 2:35:58, and Swanson just behind him in 2:36:10.

Katie Barker, 36, was the fastest woman at 3:11:35 in a slower contest that ended up with several minutes between the first three finishers. Barker pulled ahead of the pack in mile 6, and was not challenged for the rest of the race, though Ruth Weston, 25, who has won the spring half marathon twice, tried to catch her, leaving the pack at mile 15, but was eventually overtaken by Phyllis Porter, 23, and finished third place with a time of 3:19:44. Porter finished in 3:16:24.

The men's half marathon, which ended at the central train station at the border of the Forest Basin just before the Plains Sectors, was a tactical battle from start to finish. Todd Forester, a 22-year-old Orcadian, traded places throughout the race with Blake Gillis, 28, and 19-year-old first time marathoner Lewis Tarkington. It was only in the last half mile that Forester out-kicked Gillis and Tarkington, finishing in 1:06:27 with Gillis 5 seconds behind and Forester only 3 seconds after Gillis.

Shirley Lincoln, who has run the fall half marathon twice, won her first attempt at the spring marathon in 1:21:53, outsprinting Lily Jeffries, 25, by 20 seconds, and Joanna Barnes, 20, who finished in 1:24:08.

Bailey also noted that registration is now open for the fall marathon, which runs from east to west, beginning in Airburgh, following the causeway, and then weaving back and forth over the border between Forest Basin and the Plains sectors before finishing on the western shoreline.
"It's flatter than the Spring course, but it has its own challenges. The causeway is monotonous in the early miles, and the prevailing winds are against the runners from start to finish, except a few segments through the woods. But for international competitors who love a challenge, it's a great opportunity, because it's walking distance from the airport to the hotel to the start line, and there will be trains bringing finshers back all throughout the day. Come and see what Newplym has to offer!"

Peace and Closure

By Ute Gorovica

Hesttens, West Cardwith, Cardwith Islands

In a landmark decision, the Democratic Socialist Republic of the Cardwith Islands has lamented to allow Neu Engollian government forensic teams into the country in order to continue work on recovering remains of soldiers and contractors left behind during the struggle called the Independence War by the Cardwithians; the Cardwithian War by Hutanjians; and the Hutanjian War by most of the rest of the world.

After several meetings in Norritts, East Cardwith, between Cardwithian officials and envoys from the Confederacy, certain agreements and concessions were reached to allow the mission into the territory of the DSRC. The concessions to the DSRC will open up trade agreements and remove some previous tariffs and barriers to economic bonds between the two nations. As the Cardwiths attempt to rebuild their economy, their stance has greatly softened towards non-socialist, capitalist nations such as Neu Engollon and its Madurinite neighbors.

The USG Security Corporation has made repeated requests to the Cardwithian government for access to the old battlefields and jungles where heated skirmishes occurred all over the Cardwiths to conduct an identical mission, and been denied every time. DSRC officials stated that they will never again allow capitalist mercenaries or their agents on their soil.

Then, a year ago, the Confederacy government stepped in at the bequest of both the USGSC, and families who are wishing for closure. Many current and past USGSC contractors are of Neu Engollian nationality, although a fair number are nationals from many other parts of the world, as well.

The relationship between Neu Engollon and its most famous mercenary company has been rocky to strained, to describe the relationship in best terms. However, the Federal Council and Assembly have acknowledged they are nearly powerless to stop the flow of manpower to the USGSC, and that the company is simply entwined in the fabric of the Confederacy, for better or worse.

Many believe there is still a secret agreement in place between the Neu Engollon Defense Forces and the USGSC to let soldiers take contracts, get battle hardened experience, and then rejoin the NEDF at a later time into the NCO and officer ranks.
The NEDF has repeatedly denied there is any such system in place, but the proof is in the personnel that have continued to be accepted back into Neu Engollian’s armed forces year after year after having left for, and returned from, private employ.

Under the new standing agreement between Neu Engollon and the DSRC, two teams of no more than 8 members will be allowed into the Islands. They will work in tandem with Cardwithian host teams. Most of their work will be focused on West Cardwith, although some of it will be at battlefields surveyed on North Cardwith and two isolated areas surveyed on East Cardwith near the towns of Montvieux and Tarpon Bay, where USGSC commandos fought Falkasian and Cardwithian troops.

Image
The Democratic Socialist Republic of the Cardwith Islands

It is estimated that dozens of USGSC personnel were lost and never recovered in all these areas, along with a handful of pilots that may have washed up onto Cardwithian shores unnoticed. In addition to recovering USGSC personnel, any remains recovered of other nationals will be repatriated to their respective nations, if they can be identified either on site, or during later forensic testing. Potential remains of soldiers and military personnel not identified as USGSC could be from Falkasia (to be returned to the Falkasian Norritts base), New Edom, Hutanjia, and dozens of other nations whose volunteers served in the Marxist ISVC multi-national force that fought on the side of the Cardwiths; and of course Cardwithian soldiers and irregular fighters themselves.

In some instances, some of these nations saw their nationals serving on both sides of the conflict, with some nations allied with Hutanjia or seeing their veteran military personnel employed by the USGSC after their national service, but also having left leaning citizens join the ISVC. Vice versa, some socialist nations saw their more conservative citizens signing up with the USGSC. Of course, ethnic Hutanjians and Cardwithians also took up arms to serve on both sides of the conflict.

Dr. Henri Röendler, the chief anthropologist assigned to lead the Neu Engollian teams, had this to comment on his return from the Norritts negotiations:
“While the conflict was directly between Hutanjia and the breakaway Cardwithian socialist Republic, the amount of foreign nationals that fought on both sides of the conflict is truly astonishing. Dozens of nations were represented officially or unofficially in the combatant rosters and on West Cardwith there was a great mixing of all of them. We will certainly have quite a task on our hands if we cannot immediately identify a scrap of uniform, badge, or tag with the skeletal remains.
There are, however, certain clues we can garner with the health of the remains themselves at the times of their death. In this day and age, with advanced science, we can ascertain what kind of diet a person had and what environment informed most of their life up to their death, just by their remains.”

Remains that are identified with some certainty to be USGSC personnel will then be shipped to first Vesselle, Hutanjia, then USGSC Intexa personnel will take charge of the remains as they are then shipped on from there onto their island base for further study and identification.
Once identification is complete, USGSC personnel will either be shipped off to their nation of origin for final interment, or buried in the Island Base cemetery, per the combatants final wishes.

On Nesselberg, the westernmost Hutanjian island, Intexa (the USGSC support wing) personnel have been doing similar work over the last couple years to recover fallen soldiers from the War in the thick jungles, in conjunction with Hutanjian personnel. Their work there is hampered by a still active insurgency conducted by independence fighters of the FNM (Free Nesselberg Movement) and UFF rebels openly supported by the Cardwithian government. Hutanjia and its allies still hunt the rebels on a daily basis in the 3-way war that has dragged on now for 6 years past the Treaty that ended the larger War for the DSRC independence. A thick jungle and tunnel systems built by the insurgents continue to be obstacles in successful suppression of the insurgency.

Image

Meanwhile, as they continue to foment rebellion in their neighbor and former master, the Cardwiths have experienced 6 years of peace and restoration of their infrastructure and economy, with the assistance of allies in the ISC, to the consternation of current and former foes. Neu Engollian Foreign Affairs Ministry officials declined to comment on their stance on the DSRC continued attempts to destabilize the Republic of Hutanjia.

Said Röendler about the mission on the Cardwiths,
“Ultimately, while we will also gain valuable historic insight into how the battles were actually conducted on the ground during this cataclysmic recent war, our goal is to bring that closure to the families of the contractor combatants, Neu Engollian and otherwise, who lost their loved ones during the conflict. It’s an honored bonus that we may be able to do that for some of the families of other combatants, regardless of their political persuasion, who fought with other combat forces, that we are likely to come across in our searches in the DSRC.”

WADDON - Disgraced former Prime Minister Harley Crowther has surrendered and resigned following his desperate gamble to attempt to stay in power following the National Labour Party's victory in the General Election just a week and a half ago. Sources are saying that he is now being held at Cathan Forest Barracks in Tulse County by the Armed Forces, and is expected to stand trial soon in a Special Tribunal of High Court Judges. The Acting Attorney-General has authorized an indictment charging Crowther with 2 counts of obstructing the legislature, and 2 counts of seditious treason. Seditious treason carries a maximum lifetime sentence and a minimum of atleast 40 years, if convicted. Crowther could potentially be sentenced to be imprisoned on Cambers Island, joining the ranks of some of the worst criminals in the nation.

There have been other arrests too. Atleast 63 civil servants known to have been complicit in Crowther's putsch have also been arrested. The former Defence Minister, Gerald Hutchinson, along with the Former Minister of the Interior, Jordan Creary, have also been taken into custody. 5 URPAFOR (Urban Pacification Force) senior commanders, have also been arrested. It is understood that URPAFOR troops have now been disarmed and are being confined to their barracks by the Military. It is expected Waddon Province may begin charging URPAFOR troops with various crimes.

But there has been economic damage as well. The Beaufortian Dollar dropped hard against both the Asucki Florin and the Orcadian Pound, and the National Industrial Index dropped roughly 20% before the National Exchange was forced to close due to turmoil in the City of St. Giles. It is estimated that the cleanup costs in Waddon will be around $570m, and City Hall is now trying to get a $1.6bn bailout to help cover the payclaims being made by Waddon Police Officers and Firefighters, and to help cleanup the city. It is expected the Waddon Government will setup a compensations board, to compensate property owners and other individuals for their losses.

NLP Leader Samuel Coughlahn, along with Waddon Mayor Henry Sticks, gave a victory speech at City Hall, praising those who had taken up the call to defend the constitutional order, and called for peace and order on the streets again. The Conservative Leader, Albert Beverton, also gave his support. Beverton now seems to benefit the most from the putsch, as his Conservative part has taken dozens of moderate National Party Deputies, effectively making him the Opposition Leader in the Caucus. The Nationals have suspended political activity, and the party is in turmoil. It's expected that 4 Provincial Administrations headed by the National Party (Sevres, Yser, Marshen and Asile) may be flipped to No Overall Control or to the Conservatives.

As It Happened - The General Election and the Cabinet Fears

The National Government under Crowther had internally been worried for some time about "marxist elements" infiltrating the National Labour Party. The East Country Worker's Party and it's armed wing had given up it's struggle following turmoil in Falkasia, and had mostly disbanded. The Late Prime Minister, Stephen Coutts, had overseen the disarmenent and had been lenient to communists, issuing a general Pardon and promising a repeal of the Communist Party (Prohibition) Act 1962. Many ex-communists now re-entered the Regional and National Labour Parties, and fears within the HIS began to grow that the NLP would be infiltrated by marxists. This fear of a "marxist plot" eventually reached the Cabinet, and it was used to unseat Stephen Coutts, who by Late 1994, was in ailing health. Crowther came in, and allegedly began to plan for sometime the putsch.

In particular, his inner circle of the Defence Minister and Interior Minister became key plotters, alongside URPAFOR commanders, and atleast 2 conservative military officers. It culimnated in what was called "Operation Annhausen," a plan to use URPAFOR troops to take control of the Capital and prevent NLP Deputies from taking their seats so a new National Government could be elected. It envisaged the use of the Emergency Powers Act 1947 to justify the deployment of URPAFOR troops, whilst releasing reports exposing "marxist infiltration."

The worst fears were realised after Coughlan's NLP won a comfortable majority in the Caucus, and the pre-preparation was made. URPAFOR units were moved into place, and the official documents were drawn up. By June 2nd, Operation Annhausen was ready be enacted. According to one URPAFOR Trooper, "We were practically coiled like a spring, ready to get in our vehicles and head down N1 to the City."

Operation Annhausen Begins

At around 11pm on the codeword to begin the operation was communicated to URPAFOR commanders and to civil servants. Across the night, URPAFOR moved into place throughout the Capital, and began setting up strongpoints and roadblocks. Snatch Squads were sent to round up potential troublemakers, including the General Secretary of the Public Transport Worker's Union, The Editors of the Socialist Worker, Waddon Free Press, the National Post and the Waddon Metropolitian Post, the 7 Waddon Communist Party members in the Waddon Provincial Asssembly, and 3 NLP Deputies. Many Constituency Offices were raided, along with the Headquarters of the Waddon Communist Party and the NLP's head office.

By Morning, URPAFOR had formed a ring of steel around the Legislative Estate and the Government Quarter, with more strongpoints at all major railway stations. URPAFOR, however, failed to secure City Hall, the Police Headquarters, the Printing Houses and offices of Newspapers, nor had they arrested the Mayor of Waddon, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, or Coughlan himself.
However, the first deaths occured in a 8 minute firefight after URPAFOR troops had failed to respond to challenges from the foot guards at Waddon Palace, and had subsequently exchanged musketfire. 2 URPAFOR Troops were injured, whilst 8 Guardsmen were injured and 1 was killed.

The Commissioner of the Waddon Metropolitian Police, Kirk Halsted, told the Metro Post that "Our intelligence unit was more or less monitoring URPAFOR troops allnight. We more or less put most other work aside by around 2am, and the intel room was just using a big map to pinpoint URPAFOR movements around. We had a pretty good idea of where they were. We also roughly knew what they were doing as well. I took the decision to order our officers off the streets in C district at around 4am, and called the Mayor's office."

June 3rd - Confusion in the Capital, and a Prime Ministerial Statement

Most citygoers woke up in the morning to find URPAFOR Troops blocking roads and closing Metro Stations. The 8am BNBS bulletin was cancelled, and simply replaced with a message asking people to tune in at 10am for a statement from the PM. The BPBTV 8am news was brief, with remarks on the weather, and the same request was made. Regional TV simply did not come on air. This left many to switch on their radios, which were still working. Many radio hosts didn't know what was happening either. Some just played some classical music.

By 9:45am, most Waddoners were practically leaning into cars and were gathering around in groups to listen to the radios. At this time, some newspapers had now started being delivered in the Waddon Area, and many seemed very agitated, and practically suggested there was a coup underway. One bystander told a reporter: "We don't know what's going on. Nobody on the radio does. I've talked to the police officers up the road and they don't know what's going on." Outside of Waddon, little had changed, but many had skipped work to await the morning statement.

At 10am, the statement was given. Crowther raged against the NLP, and declared that there was a marxist conspiracy to overthrow the constitution. He invoked the EPA 1947, and ordered a curfew in Waddon. Many people were confused. Many more realized that the PM had launched a coup. By 11am, marches had started towards the city center, and Coughlan, the Waddon Mayor and senior Union Officals had formed a cabinet in City Hall, and by 12am, City Hall had become the rallying point for demonstrators. A general strike was called, and many began building barricades, and some began preparing petrol bombs. Meanwhile, an effort from the WMP and some Guardsmen from the 1st Waddon launched an assault on an URPAFOR Line near the Interior Ministry, leading to an inconclusive gun battle and 7 wounded in 30 minutes.

The Military itself was in turmoil, as so many orders were being sent both from the Chiefs of Staff, the Defence Ministry, and the Provincial Governors, as a result, no units actually moved on the first day. However, by the evening, clashes had occured around the city between URPAFOR Troops and Demonstrators, and Petrol Bombs were thrown. Injuries began piling up on both sides, and hospitals began quickly overflowing with casualties. Many WMP Constables joined the barricades, and helped provide security against looting in protester camps. By evening, many streets glowed red from the amount of Petrol Bombs that had been thrown at URPAFOR Troops. BPBTV was able to get back on the air and broadcasted Coughlan's call to arms to defend the constitution. Sporadic fighting occured throughout the night. Looting also take place in Outer Waddon.

The next 2 days were nothing short of warfare on the streets. Clashes tended to be bloody and left several dead. Those arrested by URPAFOR Troops faced beatings, and control of various areas swayed back and forth. A massive union effort on June 4th managed to force some of the fiercest fighting around St. Giles Railway station, eventually resulting in URPAFOR having to retreat down the railway tracks whilst being pelted along the way by Rocks, Petrol Bombs and Bottles. WMP officers, wielding shotguns and bolt action rifles, were able to storm a forward checkpoint south of Dean Forsyth House, and engaged in an hour firefight.

Many Metro stations were turned into makeshift hospitals simply to cope with the wounded, and efforts were made by WMP intelligence to locate where those who had been detained were being held. More fighting occured around the Interior Ministry, succesfully leading to URPAFOR falling back to a secondary position. More fighting took place as isolated URPAFOR units were forced to engage in running battles with demonstrators around the city, leading to the first units surrendering. A delegation from the Chiefs of Staff visited city hall, but no consensus was reached on what to do. Crowther gave an audio statement calling on people to "stop playing into the marxist's hands" - this was mostly ignored.

Internationally, condemnations began to roll in as most governments called on Crowther to restore the Constitutional Order and resign. This more or less began destroying the international legitimacy of the Putsch Government. Meanwhile, demonstrators surrounded the South Barracks, demanding weapons and ammunition. Eventually, muskets were handed out, and for the first time since the 19th century, a volley of fire was unleashed from barricades on Ireton Road, causing URPAFOR Troops to flee in confusion to other positions.

During the 5th of June, some of the bloodiest fighting took place, and the bloodiest hour occured. Fighting had slowly pushed the URPAFOR Troops back. A large melee had broken out infront of Dean Forsyth House, which lasted 3 hours and left almost 400 wounded, and resulted in URPAFOR standing at the edge of Commonwealth Square. However, this was only a prelude, as one URPAFOR trooper used a live grenade to force protesters back up Convention Street. This alone caused atleast 83 deaths and an estimated 600 injuries, and promptly destroyed any hope of victory Crowther had - indeed, towards the end of June 5th, Crowther admitted that he could not win, and began drawing last ditch plans for him, senior URPAFOR officers, and his inner circle to reach Waddon International Airport and board a private jet out of the country.

By the evening of June 5th, Demonstrators held the Interior Ministry, most railway stations, the Public Health Ministry, and dozens of other government ministry buildings. Across Waddon, there had been massive and peaceful marches in practically every major city. Every Provincial Governor had promised full resources to help defend the constitution, and 5 Justices had issued arrest warrants for Crowther and his cabinet.

The blood-soaked evening

URPAFOR Troops planned to forcefully punch through barricades and protest lines and drive at full speed towards Waddon International Airport, via the most direct route possible. At around 10pm, URPAFOR troopers began advancing up Convention Street, firing indiscriminately towards the protesters. Many fled, and some fired back. Grenades were used to blow holes open to allow for the Land Rovers to speed through, and it seemed the operation was going well. But the use of weapons and grenades had thrown the ball to the WMP to reply with their own heavy weapons, and the forward convoy got bogged down just 2 blocks west of the Waddon Bay Toll Road. Another attempt was made, this time to punch west towards the National Exchange, and saw more carnage from indiscriminate fire and grenade usage, but similarly got bogged down by heavy semi-automatic fire.

The Chiefs of Staff finally felt they had to act, and began drawing up plans to send an entire armoured division into the capital for the morning. By midnight, the movement orders had been given, and a ragged assortment of Bradley IFV's and Light Tanks began moving down N1(N) towards the city. Roughly at about 1am, URPAFOR was forced to disenage and Crowther was told the situation was hopeless. Crowther decided to wait out and hoped that a Helicopter would be able to collect him and his inner circle from the roof of the Field Marshal Cavendish Complex.

Waddon's Hospitals and Public Health services began to reach crisis point, as gunshot wound victims began flooding the hospitals. Days of stress caused by extreme amount of casualties had now impoded, and the Waddon board of Public Health was forced to declare a Public Health Emergency, and called for more resources. The Commissioner of Police personally went on TV to denounce the gun battles as "pure and utter murder." Similar sentiments were echoed from Coughlan.

June 6th - The Army arrives - and Crowther gives up.

In the morning, many were surprised to see Army Vehicles heading into the city - and many believed that it was over for Crowther. By 10am, the Defence Chiefs issued a simple ultimatum via radio, warning that URPAFOR troops who did not surrender would be "rolled over by armoured vehicles," and called on the Prime Minister to "issue a surrender by 12am." It is understood during this morning, that Crowther had a nervous breakdown, and called his Wife and Daughter and told them to flee the country. Then, with just 10 minutes until 12:00, a statement was issued through radio, announcing the Prime Minister had communicated his resignation to the Speaker of the National Caucus, and promptly ordered all URPAFOR to stand down.

It seemed URPAFOR commanders, heeded the order, and they began handing in their weapons, and were bundled into trucks and vans. They have been returned to their barracks, according to sources. The Army and the Police had started to put things right - barricades began being dismantled, and 4 temporary field hospitals had been setup around the city by combat medics to help take the pressure of the health service. Fire damage is being assesed, and people are being urged to return home. It is expected it will be atleast 2 weeks before public services in Waddon are fully restored to normal.

One will be left to ask, was Crowther's attempt on power worth the bloodshed?

The Glorious Dominion of Saescia will remember August 20th, 2023, as a day of infamy. For the first time in the history of the nation, a sitting Prime Minister has been assassinated. Her Excellency the Prime Minister Guinevere Featherington was gunned down this morning during her morning jog through the Winchester neighborhood of Williamstown, authorities said. Police have not yet identified the suspect in the slaying, turning the matter over to the Royal Bureau of Inquiry for official review. Featherington is the first member of Parliament to be assassinated in over two hundred years, a fate so ignominious as to be unheard of in Saescian politics. The death marks the tenth homicide of the year in Williamstown so far.

Investigators believe the Prime Minister went out for her typical morning run around 8:30 AM on Sunday, traveling with two-armed security guards who returned fire with the suspect after the slaying. Medical examiners pronounced the thirty six-year old Featherington dead at the scene from an impact wound to her left chest. Resuscitation efforts ultimately proved fruitless at Mercy Hospital in South Williamstown. The PM’s morning schedule had become public knowledge just last month after an exposé on her penchant for exercising in public before her daily commute to work, a factoid that investigators believe may have played a role in the slaying. Public tributes have been pouring in all day for the slain PM.

His Majesty the King issued a public statement on Sunday afternoon: "Today our nation experienced the dread terror of a wanton act of madness. On behalf of my famly and my loyal advisors, we wish to publicly remember Prime Minister Featherington for the beautiful, kind soul that she was."

"Her loss will never be forgotten," the King said during his Press Conference. "She will be remembered."

Senate Minority Leader Found Dead in Apartment

Minority Leader Friedrich Martinique, leader of the Free Lotha Party, was found dead late last night in his Neu-Aackensbourg apartment by the building's cleaning service. The senator was found dead near a broken wine bottle and two glasses, suggesting that he may have been drinking heavily.

The Neu-Aackensbourg Gendarmerie voluntarily transferred the case to the Ministry for the Security of the Revolution, also known as Misère. Comrade Noir, head of Misère, confirmed that no evidence of foul play was discovered, though declined to release an official cause of death out of respect to the senator's family.

Meanwhile, the Free Lotha Party appointed Etienne Strasburg its new party leader. Strasburg, a young reformer and former rotsgardiste, has named economic growth his top priority in previous senatorial campaigns. He is expected to deliver an obituary later today.

President Jacques Ufferman and Comrade Premier Greta Dupont extend their condolences to the family.

KIRJOGI NET DAILY
Rising Tensions in Eastern Kirjogi

19 September 2023

Rising tensions in eastern Kirjogi have provoked international concern and heated meetings in Bojra over the last weeks, with commentators warning of the possibility of future provocations. Precipitated by an armed engagement on the border between Nasumjat and Moktus, which left nine border Moktusi border guards dead on 12 August, several provinces loyal to the Haschag have announced their intention to retaliate. Insiders report that the imperial government in Bojra has attempted to deescalate, but this has been unsuccessful.

"Frankly, Eredes is in the driver's seat," reports one professor of political science (hereafter "X"), on the condition of anonymity, "The Eredeskur has spent the last two decades building a substantial military force independent of imperial oversight. Moreover, it's clear they hold leverage over Naherdec, and therefore the other major power in eastern Kirjogi."

In response to the shooting exchange in August, multiple provinces loyal to the empire announced their intention to step up inspections to prevent contraband and military supplies from entering into disputed provinces, a move that has invited criticism as discriminatory. In the meantime, several viral videos have emerged showing Naherdecite troops damaging the property of civilians crossing the border into Nasumjat.

"This is all a continuation of the fallout from the dissolution of the URSC," X explained - for international audiences, the URSC (United Republican Socialist Confederacy) was a socialist state that governed Kirjogi from 1961 until 1979. "Following the collapse of the URSC, nine constituent republics of the former state refused to recognize the new right-wing government in Bojra, resulting in an ethnic civil war. If you check Wikipedia, it will say that war 'lasted until 1986.' This is not true: concerted, large-scale fighting lasted until 1986, but the situation has never been resolved."

A peaceful resolution, X continued, is nowhere on the horizon.

"The constitutional structure of Kirjogi does not permit a stable, lasting peace," X went on, "This is a decentralized empire, with multiple loci of power, essentially independent of the central government. The Haschag (the imperial authority centered in the capital of Bojra) may or may not want to continue to 'freeze' the conflict in place, as it has since 1986. But regional powers like Naherdec and, most of all, Eredes, have both the interest and means to escalate unilaterally. That will force the imperial government's hand, requiring full commitment."

In the far north of Kirjogi, Eredes has acquired a reputation as the most belligerent and revanchist province in the restorationist regime. With a large army and (unrecognized) pretensions to royal sovereignty, Eredes has actively coordinated with several other states, most prominently Naherdec and its clients, to gradually build up a military presence along their eastern borders. This saber-rattling is highly polarizing within the imperial government itself: though supported by elements of the military and clergy, the prospect of renewing high-intensity hostilities in the east has alienated some segments of the bureaucracy, which fears international condemnation. Imperial conduct during the 1979-1986 conflict invited widespread criticism, including boycotts and divestment campaigns, due to allegations of warcrimes, including ethnic cleansing within Naherdec.

"In coordination with our partners within the Naherdec mark," wrote 'king' Drosh u'Senja of Eredes, "we have established a commission to evaluate the ongoing security situation brought on by the misconduct of insurgent forces acting under the designation of the Republic of Moktus [Nasumjat]. The most regrettable loss of life that occurred on 12 August is but a continuation of the brigandage and anarchy of the URSC, a legacy that has unfortunately been allowed to persist and fester for nearly forty years. Ever a peaceful people, we have endeavored, and will continue to endeavor, to resolve this dispute through non-violent means. Such commitment requires reciprocity, however, which has been repeatedly undermined by a pattern of provocative and militant behavior."

Senja's letter, delivered to the Eredeskur on 8 September, was viewed as striking an ambiguous tone, reiterating hopes for a peaceful deescalation while shifting blame for violence onto 'insurgent forces' - that is, the URSC successor republics. Citing a record of "endeavor[ing] to resolve this dispute through non-violent means" was evidently a reference a series of accords, established in 1986, 2002, and 2012, held in the city of Khaluk, which established limitations on military activities along the border.

"Frankly, these claims by 'king' Drosh are absurd," stated Shram Pharast, foreign minister of the Republic of Analbo, a large URSC successor state guaranteeing the Republic of Moktus [Nasumjat]. "On each occasion, the Khaluk Accords were called to address violations of previous agreements by the Eredesi military. For almost thirty years now we have seen a persistent build-up of Eredesi, and how Naherdecite, troops along the border."

International observers have largely agreed with Mr. Pharast's assessment, with peace groups calling for Eredesi disarmament. The imperial government has remained largely silent on the matter.

"As I said, Eredes has their foot on the gas," X continues, "There is little the Haschag can actually do. The officer corps, clergy, and much of the upper staff of the administrative state are ethnic Eredesi with strong irredentist sympathies. These attitudes are also popular with the masses in Nakirjogi, who fear losing their position of strength at the negotiating table due to demographic shifts in the eastern portions of the empire. For an international audience, I recommend Professor Stenkowski's work on this."

Lech Stenkowski, professor at at the University of Novaera, has written a recent book on the subject, Brittle Empire, addressing the deep demographic and institutional roots of the conflict in eastern Kirjogi and the dangerous strategic calculations the imperial government in Bojra has made to permit escalation.

"At the end of the month, there will be a major meeting in the city of Mitjan, at which representatives from the republics of Analbo, Stradesh, and Moktus will gather to discuss the situation," explains X, "It is highly likely that they will decide to initiate joint military exercises to strengthen their position along the Kalchis river, in response to the buildup of Naherdecite forces in the area. This, in itself, is a dangerous move. There is, however, a real chance that they will make an even more controversial announcement: either a plan to pursue independence, to petition Falkasia for annexation, or some other policy that forces the question of their legal status. At that point, it is impossible to predict how Eredes will respond."

Such a course would mark a major shift from the policy of legal ambiguity that has been in place since 1986, in which disputed provinces have exercised functional autonomy while leaving open the possibility of reintegration under a more acceptable imperial regime. The imperial government in Bojra has reiterated on many occasions that formal declaration of independence represents a redline that cannot be tolerated.

Unification Day Festivities Draw Record Crowds, Political Demonstrations

By Séa Etrail

October 7th marks the day in which the independent Asuckian territories were unified under the current constitution and federal government by Novaera's United Federalists. This year is the 90th anniversary of this momentous event and the 89th anniversary of it being celebrated as a national holiday. According to early attendance data, this year's celebrations brought in patriotic Asuckians in numbers never seen before.

Festivities began officially at 8 P.M. local time on October 6th, with a televised concert in Novaera ringing in Unification Day at midnight. Among the stars present were folk metal band "Altseauberin" ("Old Pirates/Buccaneers") who expressed their appreciation for Asuckian history with songs about the legendary swashbucklers of the pre-Unification Isles. The Inter-Asuckian Orchestra was also present and offered moving renditions of traditional national songs. Numerous other celebrities were also in attendance.

Following the conclusion of the concert and related television festivities an hour after midnight, most viewers went to sleep, hoping to wake up early enough to see the parades which occurred throughout the nation. Friendly competition between the planning committees of the Novaeran and Aurinenite parades to have the more impressive display has been a significant part of the holiday since it first began being seriously celebrated; this year, the Aurinnenites were victorious, with an impressive procession of floats and special guests which nearly shut down the city. As a consequence of their defeat, the Novaeran committee will be expected to include a float about a unique aspect and importance of the Aurinnenites in their parade next year.

Celebration was not constrained to just Asucki's metropolitan areas, however. In the small province of Lonn, fireworks were reported to be constant and the blue, white, and gold flag ubiquitous. The Lonns are a historically oppressed minority group descending from one of the few Gaelic tribes to migrate from western Tavlyria to the Isles. As part of Unification, their homeland within the southern delta of the Innel River was freed from their occupiers for centuries, the then-independent republics of Suel and Triil, via negotiation with the United Federalists. The Lonnish flag was seen nearly as often as the Asuckian one, and the United Federalist Party took the opportunity to hold patriotic rallies across the province.

The United Federalists were not the only political group to take advantage of the patriotic spirit. The other two major parties, the Liberal Democrats and the Christian Democrats, each held similar rallies in areas with large concentrations of supporters. The Labor party partnered with various smaller leftist organizations to garner support as well. In Novaera, a rising constitutional monarchist movement waved banners emblazoned with the arms of the Novaeran monarchy, which was usurped and abolished at Unification. Supporting them was Patriarch Daniel of the Asuckian Orthodox Church, an outspoken supporter of the movement.

In all, this year's Unification Day merrymaking was the largest ever. Nearly a million people were counted in attendance at physical events across the nation and an estimated million more tuned in either through television or online. Sales of national and provincial flags increased by approximately 750% in the weeks leading up to October 7th. Preparations are already underway for the celebration of Unification's centennial in 2033, which promises to be even larger in scope.

Historic Split in United Federalist Party Following Standoff in House

By Dmitri Groel

As of today, October 25, 2023, the near century of nominal unity within Asucki's United Federalist Party has ended. Numerous UFP representatives and senators joined together and split from the party following an incident in the House Chambers. These dissidents now form the backbone of the Union Party. Drawing on the legacy of Chancellor Inil Ćaeva, a beloved reformist and member of the UFP's progressive wing in the 1940s, the new UP is comprised of moderate Novaeran and Lonnish congress members. Moderates and progressives within the UFP have long been disillusioned with the extreme economic policies and lack of interest in social policy coming from the conservative wing. Preserving political capital is likely another reason for the split, as the UFP's isolationist foreign policy has been a losing issue for the party since the rise of the internationally-active Liberal Democratic Party in the 1980s.

Although tensions within the UFP have been rising since the end of isolationism in the 1990s, the entire situation finally boiled over today in the House of Representatives over the "Diplomatic Allotment Act," a fairly straightforward piece of legislation intended to slightly increase funding for diplomatic missions. In a move which de facto head of the new UP, then-UFP representative Elina Mueller of Novaera, called "childish, embarrassing, and a disrespect to the Asuckian form of governance," the isolationists refused to vote on the legislation and instead began verbally harassing several supporters, including some of their own party members. Order was quickly restored, with the violators temporarily removed from the House Chambers.

While ultimately resulting in no serious consequences, the incident was enough to finally cause the moderates and progressives to reject association with the party altogether. Leading House isolationist Edward Hall did apologize for the incident, stating in an ABN interview that "Ms. Mueller is correct; the behavior from our members is absolutely unacceptable. We'll take the proper steps within the party to ensure that such an embarrassing outburst does not occur again." Pressed on the issue of party split, Hall replied that, "Ultimately, it's not unexpected. It's been coming for a while now and we in the UFP did what we could to prepare for it and put it off as long as possibly. Quite simply, despite our belief in its importance, foreign policy is not an issue that we've gained any ground in. It's much easier to go with the grain here, and as a politician I can at least understand the actions of Ms. Mueller and her associates."

While the agenda of the new party remains relatively unknown, the overall political situation within the UFP prior to the split as well as early statements by UP members give some insight. It is likely that it will adopt an international policy stance more in line with the ruling Liberal Democrats, remaining open to participation in more extensive diplomatic actions. Economically, the UP will still support regulation and state-control of certain industries as has been UFP orthodoxy since its inception. Support of federal social programs may remain highly acceptable within the NP. Both economic policies contrast with the more laissez-faire LDP and the more decentralized social programs of the Christian Democratic Party.

The support base for the UP remains mostly the same as the UFP; the moderately conservative working class in Novaera, Lonn, and the agrarian provinces. Novaeran monarchists may become an unlikely ally for the UP. Historically, the city-province's monarchist movement has been staunchly opposed to the UFP despite occasionally aligning with its interests, as UFP-associated paramilitaries harassed and ultimately usurped the Novaeran crown to ensure a smooth transition to a unified federal republic in the 1920s and 30s. With the UP abandoning some of their party's legacy, monarchists are much freer to associate with the party than they were with the UFP.

The weakened United Federalists retain their historical dominance over New Austrakia and significant minority power in the heartland provinces.

In 2023, the centenary of Prince Rainier III's birth was commemorated

In May, the Sovereign Prince Albert II announced the commemoration ceremonies for the centenary of his father Rainier III's birth. The event was attended by Princess consort Safia and other members of the princely family, along with numerous heads of both national and foreign institutions and entities in the Principality, including government officials.

The event unfolded at the entrance to the Gardens of the Prince's Palace. With heartfelt emotion, the Sovereign reflected on the "House of his father," where Rainier III was born on May 31st, 1923, 100 years ago. The Sovereign introduced the commemoration committee, with him as the honorary president and his younger sister, Princess Stéphanie, as the active president. Reflecting on Rainier III's 56 years of service to the country (r. 1949-2005), the Sovereign noted that labeling him merely as a "Prince builder" was overly simplistic. Rainier III contributed significantly to enhancing Mendorran sovereignty, the Sovereign said, transforming the Principality into a modern and dynamic state with global openness and adaptability, citing the Constitution, relations with Gaul and Kimina or the Société des Bains de Mer and Compagnie Mendorrane de Banque. The Sovereign praised Rainier III not only as a leader but also as a loving, benevolent, and attentive father, acknowledging his mother Princess consort Myranda's supportive role, the latter passing away in 2022. Albert II highlighted Rainier III's influence on his own development, emphasizing the importance of unity, solidarity, exemplarity, and integrity in the community. The year 2023 is thus envisioned as a testament to the recognition and attachment to Prince Rainier III, with a focus on transmitting this legacy to younger generations.

The mission that the Princely family had set for themselves was to pay homage to their father and grandfather alike, unveiling the various facets of his personality. The commemoration commenced with a grand party on the Rock on May 31st, 2023, inviting Mendorran citizens and residents to celebrate. The event aimed to showcase Prince Rainier III's interests and everything he held dear. True to his preferences, a massive birthday cake was prepared for sharing. The Palace hosted a photo exhibition titled "The Prince at Home," along with a film screening. Throughout the year, various events unfolded, leading up to the exceptional circus festival scheduled for the beginning of 2024, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the festival—a cause close to Prince Rainier III's heart. In her address, Princess Stéphanie emphasized that everyone could honor and express gratitude to the Prince in their own way. This could include contributing archives and unpublished documents. The presentation concluded with the unveiling of the beautiful logo for the centenary year, featuring the effigy of Rainier III.

Three Assassination Plotters Apprehended in Nasikt

Gaulic authorities in the Bosque Provinces have reported the apprehension of suspects in the pursuit of the assassins of the Grand Prince Sergiu Silvia d'Elisa of Taranima, the ruling monarch of our neighbor and ally at that time. After exhaustive pursuit, and countless hours put into electronic forensics, the Gendarmerie reports that the first of three suspects have been apprehended in an ongoing investigation into Taranima’s tragic day that culminated in the killing of the Grand Prince.

Ion Gorvescu (33), a Taraniman national; Iker Jodem (41), a Bosque; and Mirko Tladizc (37), a Gaulic national, were seized in a nighttime raid in Nasikt, by GID 2, one of the National Gendarme special commando units. Two other suspects were killed in the raid, Nicolae Dumitru (24), a Taraniman; and Bogdan Popovic (28), a Neu Engollian national, when they fought the police.

Nasikt, the largest city, and the capital of Bosque Country, in the northeast of Gaul, was narrowed down as a focus in the search as authorities across Western Madurin aided the Taranimans in their search for suspects in the plot to assassinate Grand Prince Sergiu Silvia d’Elisa, says Gendarmerie spokesman Jean-Claude Hareult.

Hareult would not confirm that the plot involves an obvious alliance of Taraniman separatist groups, Bosques, Slavic Neu Engollian and Slavic-Gaulic separatists, saying only that it is far-reaching and more sinister in its scope, and that other international targets were on the plotters’ hit list before they went to ground.

It is suspected, but not confirmed by the authorities, that these individuals have links to the Euskal Nazio Askapena (Bosque National Liberation), Sloboda (A Slavic nationalist group strongest in Neu Engollon, but also present in Gaul, Taranima, and Austrakia), and Erdőtestvérek (Forest Brothers, a group of Voscoi and Ungari separatists in Taranima), just to name a few of the groups. The investigations are ongoing and Le Monde Gauloise will update the public as the authorities in the affected nations release more details.

Fractures in the Union of Kirjogi

Border tensions erupted between Nasumjat and Moktus with several deaths of guards. As the government and other states rush to take sides, it seems that the fragile union of the states of Kirjogi might be close to dissolving.

Several world leaders have pledged support for the Kirjogi government and urge for peaceful resolution in the internecine warfare that has seen countless casualties over the decades.

Grand Gala in Ardala

The King of Kimina has invited many world leaders to attend a gala in their capital, and several nations both from Teremara, and elsewhere, have heeded the call. Reports of enemies being in the same ballroom of the Kimini palace are not exaggerated, but festivities remained peaceful and calm.

The Prime Minister, Bertrand St. Vitroix, and his wife attended, representing Gaul.

Political Turmoil in Asucki

On the heels of their celebration of Unification Day, the largest political party in Asucki, the United Federalist Party split into feuding factions, with the largest being the Union Party, opposed to their former colleagues in the UFP, and its policies.

With new alignments, the next Asuckian election promises to be tumultuous as the UP turns out against the UFP, as well as other parties like the Liberal Democrats and the Christian Democratic Party, along with a rising movement of monarchists, to vie for power.

Centennial Royal Birthday Commemorated in Mendorra

The 100th birthday of Prince Rainier III was celebrated in Mendorra, close ally and neighbor of Gaul. The occasion was marked in the Gardens of the Prince’s Palace by his descendants, Prince Albert II, and wife Safia, along with other family and foreign dignitaries.

With the Prime Minister in Kimina, and the President tied up with events in the nation, the Foreign Minister, Heloise Telaclan, attended to represent Gaul and show our appreciation and friendship to the Principality.

Events in nearby Bosque Country, including protests and police activity, don’t seem to have effected the celebrations in Mendorra.

Demands for a Drawdown in Glisandia

With the successful conclusion of Glisandia’s civil war against the evangelical fanatics of the Holy Domain, and the capture of the HD’s top leadership including the so-called Holy Father Harald Borinkrijn, political opponents have rallied that it is time to bring Gaulic troops home from the Northern Tavlyrian nation after over a decade long military deployment. The mission mainly consists of special operations forces, advisors, and air support squadrons.

The commitment to our TSO ally, the Grand Duchy of Glisandia, has seen expenditures of nearly 7 Billion francs in military and political aid. Senate Minority and Constitutionnel Démocratique Party leader Stephane Rivault said,
“With the end of their civil war there, and a return to normalcy, it’s time to close the pocket book and let the Grand Duchy chart its own course. What are the people of this Republic actually getting in return for our tax francs? Are there no other TSO allies that can help carry the burden?”

Supporters of the Gaulic military’s mission in Glisandia, claim that a continued Gaulic presence there is the only way to stave off another instigation of hostilities by the YSR and its MALET allies.

With all of Borinkrijn’s court appeals exhausted, the death sentence of the Holy Domain’s leader is expected to be carried out soon in the restored Ministry of Justice building in Rikijdrottin. The Ministry was damaged by a catastrophic bombing that resulted in dozens of fatalities, perpetrated by the Holy Domain several years ago.

Marxist Invasion in Jaragupta

General Thierry Dalier reported to the government that operations were still on track in Jaragupta, as they assist the Kingdom in repelling a Marxist invasion by ISVC forces, in coordination with other allies.

General Dalier is the commander of all Gaulic Expeditionary Forces in Jaragupta. The brief comes amid reports of a coup against the Rajah in the Jaraguptan capital, Mavala, by the Royal Guard commander, General Halaganda.

The Gaulic expeditionary force is the largest of our military forces outside Gaulic territory, with the one in Glisandia being the second biggest, but consisting of more non-conventional warfare elements. Like Glisandia, opponents demand the drawdown of forces and disentanglement from Jaragupta. They argue that it could cause further destabilization of Wishtonia, and threaten Gaulic assets in the region, and its allies.

As always, Le Monde Gauloise will update our site as more details become available on developing stories.

Widespread Abuse of Labour Standards - New Beaufort Labour Standards Commission

PUERTO HALSTEAD - A Report by the New Beaufort Labour Standards Commission has blasted what is calls "wide-spread and commonplace abuse of workers across mainly low-pay industrial, service and logistics companies." It alleges both underpaying workers, and in some places, withholding pay for often weeks upon end. It also alleges widespread union-busting tactics, extremely poor and hazardous working conditions, and a culture of bullying by senior Managers. One such example alleges Charley's, a Beaufortian Grocery Store chain, which produces products in New Beaufort, engaged in a widespread campaign of union-busting, withholding and docking pay, and even seizing documents from Migrant Factory workers, forcing them to work without pay for often 6 months as "expenses." Usually these so-called expenses are usually related to either equipment, or straight up keeping the pay as "gratitude" for them receiving the work. Charley's has denied the allegations outright, calling them defamatory.

A further example reveals a manufacturing plant in New Ely District has been hiring illegal immigrants from San Rosito to work in extremely dangerous conditions. Many of these illegal migrants often end up having to hand over their passports before working, and are threatened with deportation by managers if they attempt to plead for help. Many in this factory did not even receive wages. It is believed that one plant in New Ely was forced to shut after undercover inspectors uncovered the abuses, and reported it to the Frontier Service. Another example noted the use of illegal migrant labour in a Seafood curing and cannery plant in the Chaltey Coast district. This was uncovered after a raid by the Frontier Service.

Union-Busting indeed has also been a particular issue focused on within the report by the NBLSC, noting that Union Officials were routinely denied access to workplaces, and that merely mentioning a trade union would be enough for an employee to face a campaign of intimidation from their managers.
Image
Captive audience meetings are held by managers, who often bring in external consultants to discuss the "negatives" of joining a trade union. And when workers at a Dacre Logistics warehouse in Pequeño Rosito District attempted to unionise with the Union of Logistics and Transport Workers, they were faced with the entire warehouse being covered in anti-union literature (such as the poster on the right), whilst trade union literature was routinely removed from the workplace. Managers sent employees barrages of text encouraging them not to sign Permission to Organise Forms (PTOFs). The attempt to unionise the warehouse was abandoned after the campaign.

Another criticism was the poor and hazardous conditions of workplaces across the country. According to the report, Workplace Injuries were commonplace, from strain and stress injuries, exhaustion, to broken bones, and even severed fingers and limbs. And these are only according to officially reported statistics. The NBLSC believes the figures may be higher, due to a culture of cover-ups and intimidation of whistleblowers. It is alleged that one industrial plant in the Kell Central Valley District intimidated workers who had been injured by giving them more difficult jobs as a way to warn them against reporting the injuries to the authorities. Workplaces are also reported to generally be disobeying hygiene standards and recommended practices, and the report often found warehouses to be disgusting places to work and visit. One meat packing plant in Duscan District was closed after a surprise inspection by the Beaufortian National Food Hygiene Board. The meat was being sold on Beaufortian Markets.

The report has now concluded that there is an urgent need for a large government task-force to crack down on the "cowboy behaviour" across Industry, Logistics and Service sectors, and to bring Labour Regulations in line with those in Beaufort itself. Chief Minister Balham, or the government, has yet to respond fully to the report, but a government spokesperson called the allegations "shocking" and has promised a response.

Political Dynamite? "Cash to Build" and Waddon City Sleaze could shake up the City's Political landscape

WADDON - A potential scandal is looming on the horizon, as rumours suggest that multiple companies have been making private allegations against both the Waddon Labour controlled City Council, and the at-the-time Conservative-National government between 2013 and 2020. It is believed that members of the influential City Planning Committee have often been demanding cash from property developers and construction firms to expedite the approval process for planning applications, which are usually handled through Borough Councils. It is also believed that ministers in the Conservative-National government had been demanding cash payments as well to influence planning decisions and to expedite the planning process.

And sources suggest that those involved in the scandal have benefited massively in the scheme. One source estimates that some members of the City Planning Committee had, between them, made over $2.7m in back-payments from developers and construction companies. Indeed, it is believed that former Cllr. Quentin Askil, who was until recently the Deputy Chair of the CPC, had resigned after allegations began to surface earlier this month, and according to some informed sources, has apparently fled the country. Indeed, WMP reporters found that his Brevet Hill townhouse was up for sale by a local real estate agent.

One such example, according to an informed source, was when Mr. Askil allegedly demanded $75,000 in cash from Ecury-Sloane Developments, in order to expedite the approval of a new tower block at 91-94 Friar's Row, in the City of St. Giles. Another such example was when a junior CPC member close to Mr. Askil demanded $15,000 to expedite a planning application from the Desmond and Garter Bank, for a new office block near Admiralty.

This was also the case in government, where the Principal EISB (Energy, Industrial Strategy and Business) Minister, Robert Warren, used his position to demand cash in exchange to expedite planning appeals and to pressure local authorities to approve planning applications. Once such alleged incident, was when Mr Warren demanded $75,000 from Waddon City Telecom's (The nationalised landline telephone operator in Waddon) executive board in order to reverse an earlier decision and approve a new company headquarters building on the south bank of the River Waddon.

A culture of sleaze at the heart of Waddon's Government

It is no secret that, for some time, it has become apparent that the Waddon City Council, and the City Government, has increasingly been seen with a culture of sleaze, corruption and dishonesty. A poll commissioned by the Institute for Provincial and Regional Government (IPRG) found that 64% of Waddon Voters believe that City Hall has become corrupt. Furthermore, a study undertaken by the IPRG found that, out of all provinces, Waddon ranked lowest in public trust for Provincial Government and representatives. Junior Waddon council members often make a salary on par with a junior caucus backbencher, at around $91,000 PA, and with $36,000 expenses. The average PA salary for a junior provincial assembly member is at around $58,000, with expenses at around $17,500 in expenses. But the Citizen's Campaign against Waste and Corruption alleges that there is a staggering amount of inefficiency and waste in the City Council and in the City Government, of up to $3.1 billion.

Conservatives go in for the jugular, but can they hold their flank?

The Waddon Conservative party senses blood in the water, and has launched a new campaign under their Neoliberal opposition leader, Samuel Myser. In a fiery press conference last week, Myser promised to wage a war on waste and to clean up the city if elected at next year's city elections. He hopes to make massive savings and begin an independent commission into corruption and sleaze, and promised to put the economies back into the Passenger Transport Board, the Police, and to reduce Provincial Income Taxes and Property Rates. And it seems, this message is starting to catch on with Waddon Voters. A poll conducted this week showed that the Waddon Labour Party could lose its majority in the city council, and could lead the way for a conservative led coalition to sweep their way into City Hall.

But, the danger for Myser is that he may be caught up in the very same sleaze row he's trying to own. The allegations made against the Conservative run MEISB may come back to bite him, and unless the National Conservatives figure out how to parry this, it could devour him and his entire campaign. One staffer told us that "I hope to god that, if the allegations against the 2013-2020 MEISB are true, then the National Leadership would be quick to distance itself from it."
