Welskerland was fascist until the seventies. After the monarch was stripped of his powers and became nothing more than a ceremonial figurehead, the fascists took advantage of the young democracy and won seats in the legislature by appealing to the people with improve standards of living and government programs to make their lives safer. There was the Welskian Civil War between the fascist government and the democracy supporting rebels. The war ended in a draw, with both sides getting something out of the war. The fascists got to remain in power, while they allowed representation in government for their opposition.
Does this sound particularly realistic? Particularly the part where people willing vote in fascists when they were just relieved from the oppression of an absolute monarch? I imagine it could be due to a combination of voter ignorance as well as greed and corruption, and inexperience of the politicians.
