THE SHADOWDANCER
Image
IC

Welcome to the Shadowdancer!

Now, she's not much to look at first glance, granted, but I beg to differ. She's a modified civilian transport that can support up to 12 people and cargo to get her pretty far in any direction. The catch? We don't always work for the Feds. See, we're a motley crew from various corners of the Alpha & Beta Quadrants. Whatever our motives and stories are, we've all banded together in search of pay, adventure or a place to call home. That's what the Shadowdancer is, a home, and that'll be what she'll be for as long as I command her.

So listen here, when you work for me its best you follow the only rule I take to heart: Ship is home, crew is family. Cross that line and we're gonna have some unsavory words between you and I. When you join, you accept the differences that makes us a crew, frankly because no one else will (or at least they pretend so). We're from all walks of life; we are the people the Federation can't abide by: the misfits, rebels, and the downtrodden that don't fit into their 'utopia'. And they've all but forgotten that its us that pave the way to their piece of the pie - their shiny future. But, we keep trucking on because we can't do any less. We go where the money takes us.

Come aboard and weave your piece of the story with us.

S M A R T S
So, you've got some kills, huh? Well, see the applicable lists below and the Capt'll see if he can find you a spot. Note: You can choose a Secondary as your Primary if it's easier for you, but no Primary can be a Secondary. If you have a suggestion for more skills (primary and/or secondary) please let me know!
PRIMARY SKILLS
Command - People listen to you
Tactical - You can use the ship's weapons and some
Bargaining - You make a Ferengi think twice
Smuggling - You're good at hiding things
Doctor - This is rare; there's always a need for you
Con-Artistry - You can sell ice to eskimos
Piloting - You can fly a ship with the best of 'em
Mechanics - You're the Scotty of our generation
Demolitions - You're good with explosive... too good
Cryptography - You're good at breaking codes and snooping in
Charisma - You can charm your way through anything

SECONDARY SKILLS
Underworld Contacts - You know some folks, questions best left unasked
Science Contacts - You know a few famous (or infamous) scientists
Political Contacts - You've got friends in high places
Streetwise - You can handle yourself on the street
Thievery - Need it be defined?
Spying - Your'e a shadow
Entertainment - You make pretty good money without leaving bed
Intimidation - You can scare Klingons
Psychic - Yeah, we get it, you're a mind freak
Appraisal - Remember that block of ice? Yeah, you probably sold it for a lot more than it was truly worth
Repair - So we can trust you won't blow up the warp core
Medic - Dammit Jim, I'm a nurse not a neurosurgeon!
Sniping - Yeah, what it says
Close Combat - You hold your own
Ranged Combat - You like guns
Hacking - Remember that message you snooped in on? Yeah do that on all the others.
R A N K S
So here's the thing, we're the kind of crew who can't give two shits what your rank is. Well, except for the Capt and his XO. You do the job, you get your cut. You stick around long enough, you might see a bump in your pay scale. Now, unless the Capt says otherwise, everyone starts at level 1. Don't take it unkindly if you do that's just the way things work around here.

Being the capt, he tried to scale it according to skills, but truth be told he knows it doesn't quite work out that way especially out here, so this is just a reference:

Level 1 [You're new]
One Primary Skill, Two Secondary

Level 2 [Still wet behind the ears]
One Primary Skill, Four Secondary

Level 3 [You're learning a thing or two... or three!]
Two Primary Skills, Four Secondary

Level 4 [Not too shabby...]
Three Primary Skills, Four Secondary

Level 5 [You're trusted]
Three Primary Skills, Five Secondary

Level 6 [Captain's BFF/Co-OP]
Four Primary Skills, Five Secondary

Level 7 [Your boss/OP]
Four Primary Skills, Six Secondary
S H I P
Now this here is the Shadowdancer ('Dancer for short), a modified Aerie-class civilian transport. Houses up to 6 people comfortably, and an extra 6 passengers if the need calls for it. It hauls enough cargo to keep the lights on and enough fuel to make it about a quarter-way through Fed space in any direction (without re-fuel).

Her engines were upgraded to go as fast as warp 7, but that's consuming on her resources, so we make do with Warp 4. She's also been equipped with 4 Type-VI phaser banks, two forward and two aft, but she's no warship. There's no astrometrics lab like you seen in them fancy Fed types, instead, its been converted for more cargo space. There's only one transporter and it is hardly used (power consumption is a bitch); there's no turbolifts, only stairs and some access is restricted from those not part of the crew (well, obvi). Here's the deck schematics and be sure to check the legend.

Lastly, you should know... 'Dancer isn't like most civilian ships. She's got an AI that snarks back at you: insouciant by default, irreverent by choice and one would swear the computer had feelings. You can thank the previous crewmember for this bit of work, but word of advice... don't take it up with the Captain, he takes it rather personally (and God help you if you try meddling with its programming).

Well, here she is; ain't she a beaut?
Image
Image
Legend:
Deck 1: [Aft section] Crew quarters and kitchen/lounge/messhall, escape pods.
Deck 2: [Fore] Bridge, meeting room & armory, Captain & XO quarters [closest to the bridge], escape pods. [Aft section] Sickbay, passenger quarters, small storage area [2 former labs, gutted].
Deck 3: Shuttlebay, storage tanks, secondary cargo areas, engineering, computer core [goes through decks 3 & 4], & warp core [goes through decks 4 & 5].
Deck 4: Main cargo hold, navigational deflector, deflector control.
Deck 5: Landing struts, matter/antimatter storage, waste extraction.

And this 'ere is a half-functioning Klingon shuttlecraft. Capt hasn't been able to get 'er working properly, but hey if you can fix it, by all means take a crack at it. She's a minimally armed vessel (2 forward light disruptor banks) capable of warp 3 (barely), has pretty sturdy shields, but no cloak - we ain't that rich. Careful with her, yeah? The damn thing barely fits the shuttlebay:

S T O R Y
So I bet you're wondering what is it we're gonna do and what time period we're in. The year's 2373, and space never felt more dangerous as it has now. Its almost as if you can feel the tension in the air, err, space rather. The Federation has become more militaristic and paranoid; the Klingons are on a war path for lost glory; the Cardassians are desperate defending what little they have from the Maquis; and the Romulans have been awfully quiet (not that they weren't already). And that's just the big folks, who knows what else is going on in the minds of the "lesser" neighbors. There are murmurs of a full scale intergalactic war, subspace transmissions are rife with one "incident" or another and with the Federation taking a hard stance in 'projecting' their might, you have to be a little careful which puddle you step on. All that aside though, such conflict and tension means work is everywhere.

And that's where we fit in. We'll take any job that offers coin and keeps 'Dancer flying.

That'll be our overarching plot. Players are welcome (and highly encouraged) to propose plots and/or character specific plots because it affects us all. You've got history on you? Doesn't come as a surprise, ragtag band like us are bound to have some kind of past. We don't judge (or, well, we could), but as the saying goes: what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger. Why else did you join? So here's what's gonna happen, copy/paste and post it for review. General principles apply (no godmod, etc.,etc.). You can submit a plot as many times as you like:

Code: Select all
Player/Character:
What is the plot?:
Is there a Villain?: Yes (and TG Min about the villain; delete the rest) | No (delete the rest) | Hard to explain (explain in this form, delete the rest)
Duration of plot?: quick story, medium length, long story/WIP as we go (delete all that don't apply)
Post frequency?: fast, medium, slow (delete all that do not apply)

Its your decision what kind of plot you make. What is for certain that whatever plot idea you have; it affects us all, remember the one rule of the ship. Not all plots can be done at one time and some may be delayed depending on how the IC develops.

Name: Arelle Delatorre
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Appearance: 1.78 meters, 60 kg. Tanned with a pallor undereneath. Seagreen eyes. Black hair with the tips of the back dyed antiflash white in an uneven pattern (they'd look like frozen flames if they were red or orange). Medium/taut build shrunken by the effects of chronic off-and-on (ab)use of uppers. Thin metal-plating gauntlets up to her elbows to hide the marks of her life before joining 'Dancer's crew. Generally loose clothing.
Weapons you've got on you: None in personal possession

Primary Skill: Cryptography
Secondary Skill: Hacking, Appraisal

Personality: Arelle is, like most who come from uppercrust Federation families, someone under pressure to excel. Unlike the rest, she had - and has - trouble balancing the ability to do well with knowing when to bring things down a notch and relax. As a result, she operates on exactly two speeds: normal, in tune with everyone else; and warp-11, don't-sleep-for-a-week hyperactivity with just a little help from her friends cordafin and tropolisine. When in the latter state, she pushes not only herself but everyone else in voice range to the limit, socially or otherwise. Sometimes she knows well enough to keep herself isolated and distracted...not always. In general a loner, she prides herself on being a constant surprise to those she encounters and on her adaptability to new situations. Less charitable observers might call her inconsistent or incongruous, especially when she's under the influence. Weaknesses/fears include, as above, a long-standing drug addiction, which she uses either as an aid to help her discover new system vulnerabilities or create new malware; in the past, she has used it to earn some quick cash as a net-girl specializing in offering clients a drug trip through her mind (instead of the clients themselves taking the drugs). Additionally, the historical hacker's mistrust of authority is turned up to eleven in her case, for an active disdain.
Biography: The first reaction to any introduction made using her real name ranges from "You're a Delatorre?!" to "Seize her, let's see how much her family will pay to get her back."

This is rather not surprising, as she is a member of one of the most prominent families of Earth, those ironically known as the First Families of Starfleet and/or the Federation's aristocracy. For every agency or department or division in the Federation, there has been a Delatorre. Only her origins are recorded in the Federation's databases as fact. Born on Luna, headed for a promising career in computer engineering...until she left the Daystrom Institute under uncertain circumstances. News dispatches from around that time suggest involvement in financial crimes. Little is known about Arelle's childhood or early life on Luna, in spite of the best efforts of certain officers from Federation Security. Her family takes care of their own, even the sheep that's black as night. Unusually, more is known about her life of crime on the fringe than the one in civilization.

With her upbringing, she brings a certain ability to cultivate contacts, although it has mostly been used to deal with the unscrupulous since leaving Mars. The typical interaction is an exchange of favors, and for this reason she has some use for the Great Material Continuum as more than a philosophical construct. While she often rejects this in favor of a live and let live alone attitude, with no other choice (such as if held for ransom by more out-of-touch criminals), she is not shy about using this particular skill, as she has little combat ability.

Made a couple of changes, and added some detail to Suval's bio, if that's alright:

Name: Suval
Species: 1/2 Vulcan, 1/2 Romulan
Gender: Male
Age: 79
Appearance:
Image
Image

Weapons you've got on you: Old Type-II phaser, Romulan dagger

Primary Skill: Tactical
Secondary Skill: Close combat, ranged combat

Personality: Though usually stoic and logical, like you'd expect from a Vulcan, Suval has recently started allowing himself to fully experience his emotions, potentially leaving him prone to emotional outburst.

Biography: Suval was born on Vulcan in 2294, and was raised by a single mother on the desert world. In his youth he excelled in his studies, but as he grew older he began to have greater difficulty suppressing his emotions than most of his classmates. Eventually he would come to learn that this was likely because the father he had never known was not a fellow Vulcan, but was in truth a Romulan. As news of this provoked a "serious emotional response" in the young Suval, he was sent to study for a time under a Vulcan Master who helped to once again bring his emotions under control; after which he resumed his studies and found that he was particularly adept at Suus Mahna and tactical calculations. As it was only logical to find a career where he could put his talents to use, he applied to Starfleet Academy in 2319 with the intention of becoming a Tactical Officer, and after being accepted, left his homeworld for the first time to move to Earth. Concerned that more prejudiced species might hold his half-Romulan ancestry against him however, he did not disclose his full heritage on his application form and listed his species only as "Vulcan."

After graduating with honors, then Ensign Suval was assigned to the Excelsior-class USS Houston on a six year deep-space exploration mission. He learned much in those six years and even earned himself a promotion to Lieutenant, but after the mission was completed he found out his mother had been diagnosed with Tuvan Syndrome and took an extended leave of absence to take care of her. In that time he learned a few more details about his father, and was even given a Romulan dagger his father had gifted to his mother to remember him by. Suval would remain by his mother's side for the next 11 years, until she finally succumbed to the disease and he returned again to his career in Starfleet. For the next few years he bounced around to a few different assignments, until the massacre at Setlik III in 2347 kicked off the Federation-Cardassian War and saw him posted to the USS Bismarck on the frontlines of the conflict. He would go on to distinguish himself during the war, gaining valuable combat experience both on the ground and in space, and was even awarded the Star Cross for distinguished actions in the battleground of Camor V. By the War's end he had achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander and the post of Chief Tactical Officer aboard the Bismarck and looked to have a promising future in Starfleet; until one fateful day in 2367 would change everything.

Not long after the over-zealous Admiral Satie uncovered the secret Romulan heritage of a crewman on the USS Enterprise, a number of Starfleet officers became suspicious of their pointy-eared comrades; unfortunately for Suval one of these officers was the rather paranoid Captain of the Bismarck. The Captain ordered all Vulcan crewmembers to undergo genetic testing to ensure that there were no Romulan agents aboard her ship, and Suval knew this meant his true heritage was soon to come to light. Rather than have that secret exposed by the genetic test, Suval told the truth to the Captain, who was furious that Suval had lied for so many years. Now also concerned that Suval may be a Romulan spy, the Captain ordered that he be confined to his quarters until he could be dropped off at the nearest Starbase to await a court-martial.

The trial was fairly short, and while Suval was found innocent of any treason, he was guilty of lying about his heritage on his admission form. For this, the judge ruled that he be dishonorably discharged from Starfleet, but did not sentence him to serve any prison time. And so, his once promising career came to a disappointing end. Though Suval didn't serve any jail time, his dishonorable discharge still felt like a life-sentence to the Vulcan, as it became all but impossible for him to find legitimate work with that black mark on his record. He returned to his childhood home on Vulcan for a short time, but with too many painful memories of his mother there he soon left, taking only his father's old dagger with him.

Believing he had failed as a Vulcan, part of him began to hope he might fare better as a Romulan, and he began to allow himself to feel emotions again while contemplating the possibility of trying to find his father and starting a new life in the Star Empire. Eventually he came to his senses, knowing full well that things would not go well for him in the Empire if it should ever be discovered he used to be a Starfleet officer, but he did find he rather liked the sensations that accompanied emotions, and continued meditating less and less as he spent the next few years drifting around the Quadrant, until recently beginning to cease meditating entirely. How this decision may impact his recently acquired job aboard the Shadowdancer however, remains to be seen...

Name: Samantha Thomas
Species: Human
Gender: Woman
Age: 28
Appearance:
Image

Weapons you've got on you: Type 2 phaser, an antique MACO particle rifle from the Romulan War (passed down through the family), and a Swiss Army Knife, if that counts.

Primary Skill: Mechanics
Secondary Skill: Underworld contacts and ranged weaponry

Personality: Usually reserved, but is prone to prattle on about things that interest her, and could go toe to toe with a Klingon when mad
Weaknesses/fears: Hard-headed, has a crippling fear of bees, wasps, and other stinging, flying creatures.
A little about you: Likes long walks along the beach on the holodeck, as well as the actual beach. A hopeless romantic. Likes to blow shit up. Could probably make a replicator from two sticks, a rock, and a shoe lace if she had to.

Samantha was born on Earth, near New Orleans, to be exact, to human parents (although a recent medical exam revealed some Skagaran ancestry from a few hundred years ago). In her teens, her parents moved to Salva II, one of the colonies near Cardassian space, taking her with them. Once she came of age, she had a promising career in Starfleet Academy, having been recognized as an outstanding cadet engineer, until, in her junior year, it was discovered that she kept contact with several Maquis operatives (mostly friends and family from Salva II). This understandably put severe questions on her loyalty, especially after she refused to be an informant against them. After being expelled from the Academy, and being unable to get 'legitimate' employment in Federation space, Samantha began looking in 'shadier' fields, eventually coming across the 'Dancer.

Hmm, since we probably don't need two mechanics, would it be alright if I changed Suval's primary to tactical? (I'll edit the bio accordingly as well).

Alternatively, one could have Ops, the other Engineering.

Still, seems like kind of a waste of a primary to have the mechanic skill and just sit at Ops all the time. Switching Suval to a tactical primary seems like it'd be more useful at the moment.

Ops and Engineering are very closely related. In that one alternate timeline, Harry Kim was a design engineer on the advanced runabout project, but his standard job description on Voyager was Operations officer. Note that the point of divergence was after his graduation, so his specialty was the same, regardless.

Memory Alpha tells us that Ops officer also often acted as science officer (which being an engineer would probably qualify you for on some level), and that in addition to dear Ensign Kim, everyone's favorite Android also served in this capacity (and he also often worked alongside his ship's Chief Engineer).

I don't know that there's a whole lot of overlap between Science and Engineering, but alright, if you think a mechanics primary would be good for Ops and want to put your character there, I guess I can keep Suval's primary as mechanics as well and put him in engineering.

Suval gets Engineering (with assistance from Sam), and Sam gets Ops and the shuttle.

I was asked to rejoin, I figured I might as well rejoin as my naive clueless sort-of-medic amish girl :V Min also said I really didn't need to change much so I didn't lol

Name: Hadassah Hochstetler
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Appearance: Hadassah, more or less
Weapons you've got on you: None.

Primary Skill: Charisma
Secondary Skill: Medic

Personality: Naive, a bit on the immature side and unskilled except in traditional fields. Intensely curious, especially about space and the universe. Rather pacifistic. Tries to help those who are hurt, never likes doing the same. Rather gentle and kind of a person, but being stuck on her planet is making her antsy and full of wanderlust.
Weaknesses/fears: knows practically nothing about the wider universe, and many things she does know is imperfect knowledge slanted with "Its bad because its not traditional". She's not used to being around aliens, nor does she quite understand how things work outside her home planet. Her curiosity can get the better of her, but she's largely afraid of the unknown, and the intense darkness of space(or at least how she imagines it).
A little about you:
Hadassah Hochstetler is a girl from a planet settled by the Amish during the earlier days of humans spreading out to the cosmos. It was a good way to get away from the Earth and keep their traditional way of life. They indeed weren't the only ones to do so. They have always been rather ignorant of galactic goings on, except for the occasional news brought by outside traders or visitors. A rather pleasant planet of greenery and fields, it looks almost idyllic for some. It was named Oschterdaag, or Easter.

Hadassah herself is rather young, and grew up in the small town of Armagh on the southern continent of Oschterdaag. Her life has been normal for someone on the planet, simple and rather boring. It was practically the same thing every day: wake up, do chores and work, eat, and eventually sleep. A routine of simplicity, and something among that makes youth dreary and bored with life. So over time Hadassah did too. While she kept up appearances of normalcy as was expected, by her 16th birthday she had dreams of going to the stars.

While her people might have been rather backwards and traditional, they weren't stupid. They knew about the Federation, and a handful of alien races, and the growing technological gap between them and the rest of the universe. For the most part they didn't care. It made good conversation, and those going on Rumspringa always had stories of course, and Hadassah couldn't wait until her time to go.

As a way to alleviate her boredom and search for something to do, Hadassah went into learning the bits of medicine and doctoring that they were allowed to learn by tradition. This amounted to traditional cures, and simple medicine. Enough to act as a nurse and deal with the kinds of wounds on her homeworld but not much more than that. Though even though it wasn't much, it was something. In her village she managed to get an apprenticeship under their town doctor, something rare for a female to get and a source of pride for her parents.

And so she kept persisting on their world, learning about medicine and helping her town.

But when she was old enough for her Rumspringa, she couldn't make herself leave. She had no idea why but she couldn't abandon the only place and home she'd ever known. Her growing wanderlust didn't help matters, but she tried suppressing it over time. Hadassah was quite frankly miserable.

Eventually, She had enough of this misery and resolved to take Rumspringa. She had yet to go on one, even though she had taken the baptism already. Talking with her parents and the elders of the village they reluctantly agreed to let her go on the next ship that would come in, though the next trader wouldn't be due for nearly a year. Unless someone happens to visit the planet by chance, it was unlikely her Rumspringa would happen anytime soon.

So, she went back to waiting. And Hoping.
