The deal with Britain was already paying massive dividends. Without the need to build their own rockets from scratch and test each individual parts, the scientists of the RRU and NEV were already far ahead of where they could have projected otherwise. They were intending to keep up their end of course. Work on the Martian projects was already underway. Experiments in how to build habitats in low atmosphere environments, the use of robotics in in such endeavors, and what crops might do best in martian soil were all on the docket. Those were just the tip of the iceberg when it came to settling Mars, of course.

But meanwhile, the research was already helping give their scientists and laboratory a great many ideas for potential research opportunity and great steps to make. More proof that the human spirit to advance and improve would forever outdo their destructive nature. Innovation being directly applied to advancing the future of humanity.

In this case: an asteroid. The first one mined by German robots. Nothing fancy, but a German designed set of robotics and storage of minerals. An entire asteroid rendered into slag and base elements for transportation back to Earth. Enough resources to maintain what the Rhine-Ruhr was doing its best to build.

And hopefully enough to maintain their momentum and continue their plans to create the first proper settlement on Mars.

It was time. Chief Researcher Ismail Federov straightened his tie subconsciously before glancing at his steel-gray watch to confirm what he already knew- prepared to the minute, to the hour, the Unity Engine was ready to go online. A faint nod to his aide, who ventured a brief smile that the scientist did not return. He hated these public functions with a passion, but that was the price he paid for all the funding his department had received in these past decades. From within the Complex had come the theoretical physics of the Jumpdrive, and now they were going to make another quantum leap in mankind's understanding of the cosmos. Perhaps not as flashy, aye, almost certainly not as flashy. But just as important, to the mind of the man from Bristol.

The aide opened the door, and immediately the flash of lenses lit Ismail's eyes. He stepped forward, out onto the stage of the main conference hall, where a hundred and more different news organizations had gathered for the occasion. In the gloomy murk of the audience seating their cameras were twinkling stars, but the Chief Researcher was used to such impositions on his eyes- that's what the darkening contacts were for resting on his corneas.

A matter of little pomp and circumstance, but much song and dance for the talking heads on the airwaves. Ismail smiled his best social smile, making sure to keep his lips closed; Andrei had told him he looked like a shark searching for a bite when he bared his teeth. At the podium in front of the Researcher a small red button rested, and he stepped forward in a few swift strides to take up the device in his left hand.

"Ladies and gentlemen."

Thank God, the microphone was in tune today. The goons in audio and visual had fucked up enough times for Ismail to be grateful for small mercies.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for coming today to witness this momentous occasion. Today we are here to mark a milestone for the Complex, and indeed, for the Hegemony herself. Thanks to generous funding from Blue Sky, it is now my privilege to announce that today, now, the Unity Engine, our new Datahub, is ready to begin her quest for comprehension. We here at the Institute thank the Chairman, and the Landsraad, and the shareholders for this opportunity from the bottom of our hearts."

Dreck. Necessary, peddling that schlock, but it still left a foul taste in Federov's mouth. The politicians wanted their constituents to be impressed, and the shareholders wanted to feel that they were driving the future, even if neither did more than give real scientists the funding for true innovation. He had been playing this game for decades, ever since the Knowledge Institute and the Complex had been founded and he appointed her first Chief Researcher.

"And now, without further ado, I commence her operation."

One finger, callused and weathered by so many hours in the field, depressed the lurid red button. A prop, rigged up for the ceremony, but her functionality was real enough. As the depression reached its nadir, the links between the Engine and laboratories across the Hegemony were opened. Exabytes of information would be flooding into the optical computers and dataspinners as he stood here smiling for the cameras.

Ismail couldn't wait to finish the meet and greet, and get back to his office. There was a whole universe out there, just waiting to be examined.

The secondary orbital delivery went quite well, actually. The retrieval process was a lot smoother than before, and the materials were retrieved and put to the black market soon after. The syndicate was now swimming in more money than they had thought, but their flooding the market would have major consequences on the future of their operations if not addressed soon. But for now, they could enjoy their martinis and cigars in luxury and peace, it was only hoped that this luxury wouldn't run out anytime soon.

CEO Jenner was now sitting inside his office, while having a cup of coffee. He was now reading the reports about the company's current state, showing the resources the company has, as well as the advancements Astro Reach now had. Seeing that the company had six capital, and that there were no opportunities to establish a factory or facility yet, he decided to establish yet another lab in the Dixie region for Astro Reach. This time, it would be located on Dallas.

The lab was purchased from an uninhabited building. After that, workers converted the building to a lab, by doing few renovations and moving equipments inside. Soon, scientists, consisting of those who worked for years, as well as new ones, were moved to the lab, to work there.
