The Tale Of The Seekers

Image

For hundreds of years, the Wardens have safeguarded mankind from the threats of the supernatural. The world of magic is by no means unknown to the general populace, but it is the Warden's mission to keep the arcane from harming the mundane. The world of Oturn is made of two large continents; Ioslen, the Southern landmass, and Yigros, the Northern landmass. Humans have kingdoms and cities all over the world, but they share these lands with Elves and every kind of monster imaginable, and some that couldn't be contrived in the darkest recesses of mankind's nightmares. Magic users are welcome in some societies but persecuted in others. The Wardens are a massive organization with agents in nearly every human government and court, but they do not serve any one group or leader, and such is the reason they try and remain as secret as possible.

The Seekers
The Wardens have many branches that combat different threats to humanity. This is the tale of the Seekers; a small team of select individuals who seek out and secure aberrations; magical objects that have terrifying powers. The Seekers are based out of Ioslen and led by John Bartimaeus, an old veteran who has secured hundreds of dangerous artifacts. The Seekers operate with a large amount of autonomy, mostly free to run themselves if they manage to stay within the bounds of authority granted to them by the Wardens.

OP Blurb
Hello and welcome to The Tale of the Seekers! I am Cyberiad, and I will be your OP. This is an idea that I have been working on for a while that draws inspiration from sources such as Warehouse 13, Supernatural, Doctor Who, and many other elements from video games and novels. In this RP (which may spawn sister threads) you will play as a new member of the Seekers. You will be part of a team of individuals tasked with locating and securing objects with supernatural powers under the leadership of John Bartimaeus (My Character). Bartimaeus has worked solo for the last few years, but the Wardens decided it was time he had a new team. They found your character, and recruited them. They gave them basic training, and now you are ready to meet your new boss and team. The story arcs in this thread will be more of a railroad nature than a sandbox, but will still have sandbox elements.

This is set in a fantasy world that I am constantly working to improve, but it is difficult to build a world from the ground up. The running idea behind this world is that an event in our world in the distant future shattered and fragmented time. As the timeline tried to rebuild itself, time became jumbled, and different eras were mashed together, ranging from primitive pre-history to the Victorian era. This manifests itself as different regions of Oturn having drastically different levels of technology, but most have settled in a late-medieval fantasy-esque level of society. Some regions have people resembling tribal humans, and some are more steampunk in nature. This fragmenting of the time-space continuum also released magic into the universe (This also represents far-future tech). The world of Oturn has existed for billions of years after the event that fractured time, but due to time's broken nature, the world goes through eon-long cycles of destruction and rebirth. As a whole, time seems not to advance, stuck in an infinite spiral. The people of this universe are not aware of this save for "The scar", a scar or crack in space-time visible in the night sky. It is suspected that it is the source of magical energy in the universe, but it has existed since time immemorial(I know that this is confusing, so feel free to ask questions).

For the setting of most of this world, think of the late middle ages to Renaissance to early Victorian as the range for dress and societal organization.

The Hall of the Seeker
This will be your home during your stint as a Seeker. It is located in the small harbor town of Brineholde on the southern continent of Ioslen. The locals know it as Castle Brineholde, but it is a cover for the Seeker facility located beneath the small Castle. On the surface, the Castle is seemingly normal, but underneath is a bunker that houses an extensive library of lore and arcane knowledge, and storage for the aberrations the seekers hunt down. The hall also houses a Dwarven Gate, a magical machine that can open portals to nearly everywhere in the world.

  1. General NS rules apply
  2. Op word is final
  3. Swearing is allowed, but keep it reasonable
  4. I encourage you introducing things to the story arcs, but don't do anything major without first asking me
  5. Don't kill other people's characters
  6. Don't have any ulterior motives for your characters without my approval
  7. Keep things reasonable
  8. No godmoding
  9. Be respectful

Character Application
Below you can find the application form. A few guidelines: don't make your character too powerful, or too eccentric. Your character may be magic sensitive, but I don't want more than one or two mage characters. Your character must be human, or at least human-based (werewolves, vampires, etc). Your weapons can be magical items from the seeker's collection, but cannot be too powerful. Firearms are no prohibited, but discouraged and are limited to flintlock technology.

Please delete everything in parentheses.

Map
Image
Here is a link to a higher resolution map. I had to scale down the embedded image to comply with Nationstate's image specifications.

This is a map of the world of Oturn. Billions of years after the Time collapse, this is the current geography of the world. The larger landmass of Ioslen contains terrain ranging from lush marshes to harsh deserts. The Cities and towns here resemble the late middle ages to Renaissance style levels of technology and government. There are several kingdoms, as well as tribal people who call Ioslen home, but they share this space with a greater number of elves and other mythical creatures than Yigros.

The Northern landmass of Yigross has societies closer to the Victorian era. Technology is a little more advanced here; there are steampunk-ish machinery and primitive firearms being developed and manufactured here. Magic users are less common, instead, they have adopted a more scientific interest in magic, trying to recreate the works of the long-extinct dwarves who were gifted in combining magic and machine.

I will update this map as we add more locations and regions as we take on more jobs.

The red dot represents the town of Brineholde and the Hall of the seeker.

Seekers
  • John Bartimaeus- The weathered leader of the group who is weary of working with unexperienced Seekers, but is dedicated to keeping the team together and safe.
  • Jackson Dennis- A Pragmatic Nobleman with an affinity for firearms who seeks to do good in the world.

Seeker Application
Image

Name: John Bartimaeus

Age: Appears to be 46

Appearence:
Image

Personality: Collected at pragmatic, he tends to come off as reserved, but he has times where his sense of humor shines through. He is very strong-willed and direct; gives off a sense of leadership and authority.

Role/Specialty: Leader/Strategiest/Owns the Codex

Species: Has immortality, or at least extreme longevity(will be revealed later on).

Strengths: Has been a seeker for decades, and has a lot of field experience. Generally, know how to solve any situation. He is strong-willed, and is always focused on the mission at hand.

Weaknesses: His experience has bred some hard-headedness that can get him in difficult situations. He is used to working alone, and as such has trouble asking for help, putting the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Weapon(s) Of Choice: Dayrent; a double-edged sword that burns enemies on contact(Like Dawnbreaker from Skyrim). The Codex (The Greater Codex)- One of the Codices, a collection of old and extremely powerful books that contain knowledge of the arcane and the mundane. Has the unique ability to steal information from other books around it. Has an amulet enchanted with a telekinesis spell that allows him to push/pull things with magic, but it takes the same amount of energy to move as it would if he was moving it himself.

Bio: Bartimaeus grew up in an old, influential family that had a strong connection to the arcane. He was destined to inherit a large fortune, but his ambition led him to make a deal with the King of the Broken, a supernatural entity who grants mortals wishes that come at a terrible price. He gained immortality, but it cost him his son. Seething with revenge, he sought out a weapon or means of defeating the King of the Broken. In the end, he won and escaped the control of the king and made him bring back his son. To Bartimaeus' horror, his son was deathly ill, and he wouldn't get well, but he wouldn't die. Heartbroken by the king's last act of spite, he swore to find a way to save his son. Noting Bartimaeus' skill at finding aberrations, the wardens approached him about joining the Seekers. He joined, believing that it would put him in a better place to find a cure for his son.

He served the seekers for decades, seeing new faces come and go, and eventually becoming the head of the Seekers.

Seeker Application
Image

Name: Jackson Dennis

Age: 34

Appearence:
Image

Personality: Jackson was always an eccentric performer with a focus on rhythm and constant movement. His outlook on life reflects this, he was always pegged as a flighty airhead with nothing on his head. His pragmatism shines on the field of battle and the protection of innocents.

Role/Specialty: Flintlock Ranger

Species: Human

Strengths: His athleticism and high octane fighting style.

Weaknesses: His constant shifting and darting focus leaves him tired and irritable after extensive battles or tasks. Along with his lack of melee experience. Along with a limp that he can't seem to shake.

Weapon(s) Of Choice: Dual flintlock pistols and a saber.

Bio: Jackson was born in the nobility, his education and poise was his main source of pride for a long time till he came across a flintlock pistol and seemed to bond with the weapon over night. Because of this he begged his father to allow him to learn how to fight. Not one to stifle talent and progress he allowed it so long as his son learned from the Academy of the Improved and succeeded in doing so. This marked the beginnings of a very talented Noble Ranger, after constant trials and character building and growth has lead Jackson to be invited to be apart of His Royal Majesty's Ranger Core. Which he summarily declined for he felt his expertise and knowledge would best be served for a distant township . His first landfall was met with surprise and obvious disdain from the more common folk.

His rise to be a folk hero started from an event called "Harlington's Ford" where a rogue raiding party tried to forcibly gain control of the town of Harlington. Jackson's involvement was thus, he challenged the raid boss to a Duel of Powder, in which case he outright eviscerated the raid boss's gun and left lung. He accomplished this task via a combination of sheer luck and last second aim correction. Though sadly his right leg took a disastrous hit rendering him crippled, two weeks later he heard rumors of a secret society recruiting anyone and everyone to protect the innocent. With hope in his heart and determination he sought out this mysterious group blazing a path of successful duels and monster hunts, all in an effort to join this group. In which he did find one agent that partially healed his leg and gave him a letter to a set of coordinates.

2 RP examples: This isn't my first nation and most of the Rp's I have participated in were under that nation. So can my bio be the main example?

So yeah here's Jackson ^_^

Accepted.

Your bio is well done, and will be sufficient.

There is one major note that I would like to make; the timeline event happened billions of years before the events of this RP. As such, no one is aware of time's broken nature, they just know of the scar, but don't know how it got there.

The time thing is mostly just my premise as to why this world isn't Earth as we know it, as the reason we have Victorians and people from the middle ages living on the same planet.

Just leave out the portion about the time break and the new world (both continents have existed for millions of years, and the peopel trade between the two), and it will be perfect.

I like the concept you've got here and I'm eager to try out an old idea from another RP. Question though, I assume revolvers would be beyond the tech range for this setting? I can make it work without.

Just flintlock technology for now, but revolvers may come into play later on. I already mentioned magic flintlocks to Bemothious, but that technology will not yet be available to your character.

Seeker Application

Name: Amira Kal

Age: Frozen at 17 after an unfortunate incident. However, she will die at normal human time (75-90), even if her body doesn't show it yet. 29 in reality.

Appearence:
Image

Personality: Bubbly, seemingly open, yet has a fair amount of secrets kept to herself. Would be considered an extrovert. Acts like a teen in normal situations, but acts a bit more her real age in serious situations.

Role/Specialty: Mage in training

Species: Magical human

Strengths: Amazing at magic, although terrible at controlling it, which is why she's still in training.. Rather smart. Loyal.

Weaknesses: Dyslexia. Paralyzingly afraid of spiders. Again, can't control power well. Weak physically.

Weapon(s) Of Choice: Magic staff. Not only does it help with magic, but it's also very efficient for beating someone to a pulp.

Bio: Not much is unusual at first. She was raised normal until ten, when she discovered her powers and was shipped off to a school for the magically gifted. There she remained, increasing her power and experimenting with magic, which had interesting side effects, such as unusual coloring of hair and eyes.
Then came the whopper. At seventeen, she tried to preform a spell never tried before that was supposed to turn one immortal, but it backfired. Her body was frozen in age, while inside she still aged normally.
After that came a series of incidents trying to reverse it, but evidently something terrible happened and she quit trying. When asked, she never answers what happened. The school saw her as a threat to everything they knew and kicked her out.
After all of that nonsense, she received a mysterious invitation from an all but unknown group called the Wardens, noticing her magical aptitude...

I think its great. I would assume that there would be institutions for training the magically gifted. I would stay away from terms such as witch because when I think of witches, i think of something not purely human, so would mage work?(I know its kind of strange, but that's just the way my mind works. :p )

She will be advised to wear plainclothes and hide her magic when they go to certain areas that are not as understanding of magic, but that is really more of an IC thing.

The only thing I would ask to be changed is that the Wardens are a very secretive organization, most people wouldn't know what you are talking about if you mentioned them; it would be more likely that the Wardens noted her magical aptitude and then offered her a job as a seeker after she was expelled.

Also, do you have/will you get discord to help us coordinate conversational pieces?

Seeker Application
(Image)

Name: Amira Kal

Age: Frozen at 17 after an unfortunate incident. However, she will die at normal human time (75-90), even if her body doesn't show it yet. 29 in reality.

Appearence: (Image)

Personality: Bubbly, seemingly open, yet has a fair amount of secrets kept to herself. Would be considered an extrovert. Acts like a teen in normal situations, but acts a bit more her real age in serious situations.

Role/Specialty: Wizard/witch in training

With nowhere else to go, she decided to become a seeker...

2 RP examples: See signature (preferably Beyond the Stars and/or The god's Next Door)

I think its great. I would assume that there would be institutions for training the magically gifted. I would stay away from terms such as witch because when I think of witches, i think of something not purely human, so would mage work?(I know its kind of strange, but that's just the way my mind works. :p )

I'll make it a mage (in training) and change Warden stuff, but sorry, I don't do discord. If OOC isn't acceptable, I'm always in TGs.

No, that's fine, we can work with the OOC.

Seeker Application
Image

Name: Alexander Truvo

Age: 30

Appearence:
Image

Personality: Cocky and self-assured, Alex has gotten himself into a number of situations by running his mouth. His ego is easily apparent, but he can be a team player if someone is in danger. He feigns apathy and stoicism, but it is just a front to suppress feelings which he thinks come with weakness. He's intelligent and light on his feet, always quick to banter

Role/Specialty: Rogue/thief. Good at infiltration and sneaking into secure areas. His intelligence also makes him good at book work.

Species: Just human

Strengths: Stealth/infiltration, Puzzle solving, getting out of tight situations.

Weaknesses: Is good in close-quarters combat or dueling, but is not a warrior, he will quickly lose against multiple assailants. He has trouble trusting.

Weapon(s) Of Choice: Stygiant Iron Sword(given to him after he was picked up by the Wardens) is his main weapon along with a small dagger, but his arsenal varies with a task, with a crossbow being common.

Bio: Alex didn't grow up in poverty or wealth, but he sought out adventure and excitement. He pulled job after job, gaining a reputation in the crime world as an accomplished thief. He was hired by a group of some less-than-upstanding citizens to steal a decorative sword from a private collection of a wealthy nobleman. Alex didn't know it at the time, but the sword was an aberration capable of giving its wielder the ability to control wind. When he was cornered by the Nobelman's guards, he drew the sword to make a last stand, but not knowing how to use the blade, he unleashed a violent gust of air that took down everyone in the room. Alex staggered back to his safehouse, hurt from impacting the wall. When he walked in, two wardens were waiting for him. They offered to wipe away his criminal record and pay off his debts if he joined the seekers. Alex accepted; the deal along with the pay was too much to turn down.

2 RP examples: The gods next door & Are We Heroes (you know me Cy).
