So how long does it take him to get used to a different blade?

Also, that is just a little overpowered for 4 points on swordsmanship. That rates, I think, more like a 7+ and doesn't really allow for his character to grow since it seems like he's already reached his major goal.

BACKGROUND

Education or Training: Temple of the Sword Saints

Character Background/Biography: My birth coincided with the year and hour of the Dragon. My world was called 'Tenno'. It was a place where my people, the long living Elvin, flourished and where serpentine dragons slithered beneath the waves. I was destined to be great and my parents realised this. Both were distinguished warriors from the old wars against the greenskin hordes which meant they had connections. Soon I was whisked away as a baby to the fabled temple of the sword saints in the northern mountains.

At the temple I learnt the way of the sword and the way of the warrior from the monks. They had large expectations for me for I displayed an almost natural aptitude for the sword. For decades I studied and practised until I reached the age of initiation. Alongside my peers I was sent on a quest into the deep forests beneath the mountains to retrieve hidden swords from past saints. Many of us fell to the claws of the dangerous beasts that lurked there. But I was the alpha. I returned to the temple scarred but wielding the Phantom Blade. I had now earned the position of swordmaster and was subsequently enlisted into the army of the Emperor.

More decades passed. I became a revered and recognised swordsman within the army. I had proved myself against the barbarian hordes, fought dragons and extinguished malicious spirits. They called me a sword saint now despite the tradition that sword saints be of an elder age of 170 years. I felt invincible. Yet the gods did not recognise my mastery of the sword, they instead chose to make me meet my end. It was supposed to be a routine perimeter patrol of the great walls that protected our beautiful nation when we were beset upon by the greenskins. They had become cunning over the years and had prepared enough arrows to blot out the sun itself. My brave men were massacred one by one and eventually, even I could not repel the hail of arrows that now came from all sides. At that moment I felt true anguish and anger at myself for being a weakling. And then everything abruptly blanked out and I...awoke in a very much peculiar place.

One paragraph that sums up your character. This paragraph is what we'll use on your player tab on the first page of the thread. This MUST be brief. Your tab will contain a link to your application so people will have full details: Feniel Lurnu, known simply as Sabre, is a true master of the way of the sword.

I have the same questions as my CoOP. Good job, Tilt.

It's an excellent character app, Vanquaria. We just need to bring some balance for the setting.

The Enhanced Swordsmanship, as it stands, factors in at a 7+. Also, we have two things tangled into one: the person's supernatural ability and the weapon's limitations.

At a 4 or 5, Sabre could wield a sword with incredible proficiency in speed, power, and skill, allowing him to perform feats such as stopping and deflecting an enemy using twin blades or shield and blade. He reacts quicker thus his opponent's slower movements will drive him back. He's able to land precise strikes, nailing the soft spot between armor plates or taking out an eye through the helmet's thin opening. He can twist his wrist fast enough to turn the edge, thus delivering a hard blow with the sword's flat surface. He can use any bladed weapon in a pinch, adjusting to it quickly but - just like a 'straight' boxer trying to use his skills against a kickboxer, he's going to be sloppy if he's using a dagger. This is because the tactics and strategy are much different, and muscle memory isn't on par with someone specializing in these smaller weapons. He won't be blocking more than one bullet until he hits a 7 in skill - god level swordsman.

The ability to cut through solid material is dependent upon the blade, not the person. Anyone with great strength can cleave a person using a golf club, but the club will probably break or bend before he manages to get it through the spine. Likewise, not all blades, even spiritual ones, are capable of cutting through matter that is stronger than what the blade itself can withstand.

The weakness needs to be the counter to the power. Does he burn through more calories when he's "fired up" in combat? Does he become exhausted more quickly? How long can he keep up at this pace before critical fail?

Razor Wind's level is too low to form a projectile puff. He could use the ability to knock an opponent off balance, or "kick sand in his eyes", but you'd need at least a 6 before it can be shaped into something that penetrates, or used to slice things at a distance.

The dragon armor is fine. Dragons are sprinkled all over various dimensions. In PL, dragon armor rates fairly low unless the material comes from the Galli dimension (or one of Pearlelei's creatures). Standard dragon armor will stop more than standard plate (such as having some fire resistance, etc) but, as I remind our players, not even dragons can stand up against ammunition designed to tear through tanks. I'm assuming it hasn't any special properties as you haven't assigned any points to it.

At 4 points, the sword won't be able to banish spirits. It will harm them, yes. (A spirit weapon might unintentionally draw spirits as well.)

Torro, while you were gone, your character volunteered to manage the brothel. Sadly, this required him to become completely celibate and give up both testicles.

I kid. We haven't moved far. The meeting ended. People are getting to know each other, sharing background etc. You didn't miss much. We should progress to the training by Wednesday. Was going to do it tonight then found out that I won't be home much on Monday or Tuesday.

The news people are waiting to hear: it looks like Swith comes home on Wednesday or Thursday!

Rest and heal, keep your heart rate down after the procedure, don't suck through straws, ask for extra gauze to place over the surgical site when eating. Most of all - lots and lots of ice to soothe your jaw muscles (your cheeks and chin might be a bit sore because the surgeon and their assistant steady their hands by propping fingers there). And for fuck's sake, don't wait for the pain to get bad before taking a pain pill.

Good luck, Ched. Drop by the IRC/s and let us know how you're doing, if you're up to it. If not, that's cool. We understand. :)

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

But thanks for the info; good to know I didn't miss much. I can't promise any sort of post this week, or maybe even some of next week unless things shift from the conversations going on in the dining room to something more important to the RP; school's been beating me worse than a farmer beating a stubborn mule, and that's really hit me where the creative juices exist. Luckily that nice thing known only to the ancients as "spring break" is right around the corner, so hopefully things will take a brighter turn*.

*Knowing how my home state of Florida is, though, I expect nothing less than gray clouds, drizzling rain, and thundering lightning. :P

Also, good for Swith!

EDIT: Seeing as you do plan on starting the training up on Wednesday, though, I'm fine with you or someone else using Hectaros until I return, just so he doesn't suffer the same static fate of mannequins.

I'm gonna have to disagree with this one. Such dragons should exist in PL, because all myths are true. Ideally, though, we'll never find one. :P

I likewise feel characters should be able to get armor that would let them walk away from being hit by modern anti-tank rounds, but...

  • the story that justifies getting such armor will push player and character beyond what they thought they were capable of (or they'll die trying, as the case may be).
  • the player should expect his character will then be expected to deal with opponents that require him to have such armor to survive an encounter with them.
In other words, with great epic! power comes epic storytelling. Or else. :P

So having read the IC I assume that my character will have "jumped" into the Building and will appear inside his room? Is that how new Residents appear and who are in place for their transition and to prevent any violent mental breakdowns?

And how are new Residents chosen? Is there a criteria?

Final question for the time being: My character speaks a foreign language so he will have to use this "babblefish". What is this and how does it work?

Vanq commands a quiet respect that carries its own authority. He is the Hitler of NS.

"I took away Vanq's YB for deliberatly ignoring me"
"I know Vanq is a very good writer and this is how he treats someone of lesser skill?"
"I would love to have a writer of your caliber along for the ride"
"neo and vanq do a dbz fusion to form 1 big shitposter then get erased from NS by kyrusia"
"Which is the level of memeing I expect from Vanq"
"brigadier general comes on, pulls a vanq and calls us all autistic"

All Residents are Chosen by Demens for a grander plan. Once app'ed and approved, new characters are worked in by OP or Co-OP right from the point of what your char was doing and plucked out of it (usually at the moment before death). S/he will then be eased into their new life among the Residents.

As for the babblefish, we insert a dead crawfish into a char's earhole and someway, somehow, it'll work as your go-to-Galli-universal translator -nods-

Alternately, he might get a translator rat.

Also, characters appear in the lobby, usually, not in their rooms.

The sword demands daily usage for its essence to remain within the scabbard.

  • 1 Ornate, Royal Sabre, The Phantom Blade, 2 Knives

It was supposed to be a routine perimeter patrol of the great walls that protected our beautiful nation when my contigent of my best warriors were beset upon suddenly by a mighty greenskin horde. They had inevitably become cunning over the years and had prepared enough arrows to blot out the sun itself. My brave men were massacred one by one and eventually, even I could not repel the hail of arrows that now came from all sides. At that moment I felt true anguish and anger at myself for being a weakling. And then everything abruptly blanked out and I...awoke in a very much peculiar place.

IMPORTANT FINAL STEP:
One paragraph that sums up your character. This paragraph is what we'll use on your player tab on the first page of the thread. This MUST be brief. Your tab will contain a link to your application so people will have full details: Feniel Lurnu, known simply as Sabre, is a true master of the way of the sword. Proud and stoic, Sabre strives to become the greatest swordsman ever to exist. An Elvin with a good sense of morals and honour he brings with him a title he earned from his world; Sword Saint.

Fantastic edits. Approved.

Someone will give him a babblefish. It will take me a little while to post his arrival. Recovering from stomach bug here. Min and Tilt, if I drop him in, could you run Volker or have a character meet up with him at the Front desk?

(Okay, I'll be honest, I was too tired to cook so I ate leftovers the night before last. Even my own kid looked at me funny and said, "Ew, Dad, that catfish is old. Only college boys eat old food and live." She was right.)

Or else. :P

Oh, there are dragons able to withstand it. But armor made from their scales? Impact damage is still impact damage. Beautifully intact armor for sale, cheap - new owner must scrape out insides.

Potent dragons would be a quest, you're right. Starting off characters shouldn't come in with potent stuff. In a way, I've tried to level the playing field by making it "non-galli" and "galli" dragons for that reason. Some genre have potent dragons, and other genre regulate dragons to the role of an easily defeatable big bad.

"He's as powerful as Smaug!" Yeah, Smaug wasn't omnipotent. Then the player argues with me. He's seen the movies. "Smaug is a badass! Bard got lucky!" So I have to point them towards the actual books. Ancalagon the Black makes Smaug look like a rock lizard. If such disparity can be found between dragons in Tolkien's own world, we can assume that a dragon from Dimension A won't be on the same scale as a dragon from Dimension B.

I've never asked Gio to outline Perlelei's dragons. I'm not sure where they fall in size or intelligence scale. Galli itself has two classifications: Greater Dragon, and Lesser Dragon. The Lessers are those obnoxious things we find in fairy tales. Smaug, despite his intelligence is still a Lesser. Within that group, we have sophont and non-sophont. The non-sophonts are the typical "monsters", about as common as unicorns (in Galli), which prey on livestock and generally make pests of themselves when they encounter dwarves/elves or other mountain-dwelling creatures.

For adventuring purposes on Galli:

Element-Based Lizards (Fire Lizards, Water Lizards, Earth Lizards, Air Lizards etc) are fairly difficult. It takes a team effort, but they can be defeated with relative ease if characters are skilled enough.
Lesser Dragons: vary in size and difficulty. Non-sophonts can be defeated with a bit of creativity. All dragons have their magic. These cover not just European legends, but also Asian and other cultures. Varg was/is a Lesser.
Greater Dragons: vary in size and difficulty. All are sophont. All can polymorph. Most have a degree of psionic ability. Many are immune to magic. Most are capable of killing lesser gods. There are very few. Perhaps the entire Building could band together to kill one, but why? If you manage to get on these species' good side, you'll have access to information, to spells, to lore, or to other knowledge or items that will benefit the group. They have their own Council in the Wold but are (as gods) apart from the Fae (who are also gods). The one closest to the Building is a hat-tip to Tolkien himself.

Klaus has ferreted out some information about this last group, should anyone ever have a need to know. Character motivation is simple: in all these years, who is the one character that goes out of his way to gather data on shit? "Go ask Klaus."

I'm curious, how would energy based weapons like lightsabers stand up to things that are 'anti-tank' or able to withstand ballistic weapons, at least in PL?

Also, now I want to meet the dragons of Galli, they sound really cool!

I had this question too in terms of what could withstand Romy's sword awhile ago, but of course I never came around to making an actual list for what his sword couldn't cut through. So it's more my own fault that I didn't have the answer already for that.

If I recalled though during the Varg Quest, Romy's blade wouldn't have done much to Varg, but obsidian would have hurt the dragon for sure. I can't remember if there was ever an exact explanation as to why, but this was well over a year ago anyway, and it could've just been something very easy to explain. :P

Pearlelei's dragons are about as smart as bears, which is pretty damn smart on an animal scale with some researchers thinking that they're (bears) close to non-human apes or a three year old child. Still, they are animals, not lizards with people brains. Like bears, they generally don't harm humans unless they feel threatened, there's a food scarcity, or they're diseased in some way, but that doesn't mean you can just go up to one and pet it. They're long and noodly like the Asian breed, however they have the faces and wings of European breeds.

Females are 90 ft long, 11 ft high, 8 ft 6 inches wide, and a 75 ft wingspan, males are 70 ft long, 8 ft high, 6 ft 5 inches wide, and a wingspan of 55 ft. They generally look white with green spots here and there, but in the light, the white has an iridescent sheen (white, green, and iridescence all being colors Pearlelei usually uses in her physical manifestations). Their scales are tough enough to let them survive a tumble down a mountain or a pitchfork to the gut, but there are materials, like obsidian, that can cut them. They can breathe out a very hot gas, but not actual fire, and it has a byproduct of creating a kind of soot in their bellies that condensces into a kind of pearls (like mollusks), which they regularly clear out by vomiting. The pearls are valued for their unique (if gross) origins, and influenced the English spelling of Pearlelei's name by translators (the Giovenisque word for pearl is "sheen" and thus has no etymological influence on "pur-LEY-lee," the English word similarities are just coincidence - like, the Egyptians have gods named Nut and Shu and Set, whose names have nothing to do with nuts, shoes, or DVD sets. Or Isis with ISIS. Poor Isis...).
