seeing the rest of the forces size, maybe a rifle section of 6 men, or a full squad ala 10 men(+ 1 squad leader)

Just my thoughts on it as a ww2 history buff ^^

Hmm, well the unit was guarding the gate so they would probably are 30 to 40 men? I was intenting breaking by accident due to impeding chaos?

The SS soldiers that followed Slak's PC arn't part of the AEF, and so don't have to abide by the rules regarding it. We can logically assume that a nice complement of soldiers would be guarding any area near the Maelstrom. We can also take into account Slaks' PC's military rank, and see what kind of force he would naturally command. I'm sure we'll find out answer there.

I believe your either British or American. If you are American, your forces are furthest from the invading Dwarve Continentals, and closest to the Elf Engalians and their city Falonde.
