Hans had thought it was a shadow by a baseboard. His handler amended that to the shadow under a fern frond.

"Hey, Klaus, the box contains an automatic sentry turret. There's floss connected to it."

He squinted at the floss to see if it was taunt or lax. Would it be set off by vibrations, for example? Or would disturbing the chair cause the floss to tighten and activate the weapon. He carefully poked his nose from the shadow, expecting the weird bots to go after him. The smell was nice, and the air felt good on his scales. Yes, a raptor-friendly place. He could enjoy it but he worried that the rest of the party, unaccustomed to using raptor senses, might fuddle through it.

"Hey, Klaus, when our new headquarters are finished, can we add a forest to the entry? I like this."

Minerva face-palmed again - Klaus wondered how she was managing to pull off the gesture so perfectly. He made eye contact with Hans. "Tell me what else you see."

He turned to address the group. "As you heard, there's a trap. Let's see if we can diffuse it. Hans will tell us how it's set up."

This is an example of pre-combat RP. Characters should do this to establish their actions PRIOR to just running into a room.

Hans was sent ahead to scout. He's doing a standard AD&D "checking for traps" (his specialty). Once NVE posts, all of our characters will know how best to climb over the furniture and debris in the doorway.

Cer is also establishing a heads-up warning to players (because his fellow's on point, and because it's what he does rather than be an ass and let some characters die.)

First, Hans stuck his nose out. We'll be able to see if the bots cue on a living being before we step into the room. Hans regenerates so it's okay if he gets chopped/blown up.

He establishes that the forest is a raptor-friendly place. That means there could be things there that a raptor knows about but humans wouldn't think about.

He establishes that players' characters might not be as agile as a real raptor... so it's best to post that your character is moving cautiously.

He then relays information to the group and advises us of his next move: he'll sacrifice Hans to diffuse it if need be.

This is an example for reading for content. Yes, play is slowed down. We've got a really big group of characters outside the door. Hey, that's RP! Bran, Rylli, Katya, Tieria, Minerva, Hans, Klaus, and the Conservators all have some military/combat/fight experience. They'd know better than to just rush in. But, if you choose to not read for content and have your character run in, it's my suggestion to NVE that your character gets blown up. Nothing teaches about hot flame better than getting a finger burned.

If you're wondering what you should do during this phase... post what your character intends to do or is doing. Luce and Chrys might be contemplating freezing time to get the group through. Bran might be wondering if he can diffuse the mechanism or worried that Rylli should stay back because things are getting even more dangerous. Tieria might be positioning himself in front of Kei to absorb the blast if Hans fucks up. But, let NVE describe the situation before doing anything and then follow the leader. Why is Klaus in the lead? Well, Cer is walking you guys through some game mechanics. Minerva or a Conservator could do the same.

Kei didn't follow Tiera, and I guess I just don't know what Bran is to do. Again, there's nothing he can do that someone else there can't do in a different way, and Rylli's about as capable as Bran. Along with Katya, they're probably among the least capable there.

Bran's the only mechanic in the group, so if we encounter weird tech, we'll need him to advise and guide and fix or diffuse or at least give us an idea of what we're looking at. Rylli's the heart... the mother who can appeal to another mother. Naomi isn't with the group and Minerva is as motherly as a punk in a mosh pit.

Actually, we'd all be poofed back to normal by now. It's a good thing Swith's in a closet dimension getting her bikini zone waxed, or else poop would be flying!

It's more fun to not use magic. Minor magical abilities, sure. Like throwing Hans on the mines or having him peek from under a leaf. I see minor magic abilities as being the same as the ability to drive a car like a stuntman/race car driver for a chase, or being able to sing at perfect pitch to break the wine glass.
