He probably did not ruin Russia on purpose, nor to the degree I implied. He did create the foundations of a democratic Russia, but he was also too impatient with capitalist economic reforms. For example, when he privatized the state-owned Soviet enterprises, they eventually went into the hands of a few oligarchs. The monopoly the oligarchs held may have dealt significant damage to the Russian economy, but I do not think that was Yeltsin's intention. I might as well give him some slack since he was doing reasonably well before then.
