Cosmic Mainframe, can we provide the opportunity to explain what the flags mean on the day before the round, if one is available?

How about this: If you want to add a description to any of your submitted flags you can provide it at any time before yours goes up to a vote. Post the description in the thread or telegram it to me and I will add it next to your submission.

I will put that in the list of rules in the OP for everyone else.

If it's not too late I'll toss "Old Squiddy" into the ring:

Image

The blue and white striped area represents a stormy sea, the dark and light grey stripes a stormy sky. Together they represent the frequent inclement weather we experience, and in a less overt sense the tumultuous journey we endured to arrive and survive in our new land.

The blue circle represents egalitarian equality; the red star, which evolved from a stylized fox head, represents intelligence and guile. Each symbol was the respective insignia of two different underground science organizations that together escaped persecution by resurgent religious authorities in an alternate 16th century England where the Church clamped down of the Enlightenment. The gold border represents the integrity and strength of Science uniting the two.

The current flag was designed by an art student, Petrovka Schillinger, a 19 year old graphic designer, as her entry into a contest sponsored by the Council of Sciencemasters in the early Sixties to replace a more ornate, excessive, and baroque design. The old design was... interesting. There were tentacles (one reason the flag is still referred to as "Old Squiddy").

It is technically too late, the contest has already begun. But I think I will make an exception for you, there are several filler flags that haven't gone yet so adding you will help make things more interesting, you get to replace the spot currently held by Western Sahara.

That's an awesome idea, and on the reply I have added a description to my first post :P

Now I vote for Renascento; as I find the layout and colour scheme of the flag to be very unique and interesting. It's really "out there" and I have no doubt it is a flag which is very much loved within the nation.

You know... I probably would love that if I knew I could do so yesterday...

But all of my flags doesn't need much thinking to discern the meaning of. In Character, The Twisted Eight/El Retorcido is obviously a symbol of eternity, wealth (it's gold and purple), and the manifold nature of the faith. Outside, it's just Blasphemous's arc symbol, telling all of the main inspiration for my nation.

Edit: Forgot this part, but I actually hadn't put much thought on the colors, picking whichever ones looked nice at the time.

Sorry about that Renascento. If I ever do this again I will try to remember to accept descriptions for flags right away. I just didn't really think of that at time of making this.

Voting is now over for Top 64 Match 1. Result: Nexitros Stratuss (submitted by Valentine Z) defeats Renascento - Peacetime Flag 16-10.

Congratulations to the submitter, Valentine Z, Nexitros Stratuss will be going on to the Top 32. Renascento still has three more flags that could get into the top 32, and their Wartime Flag will be up for a vote in Match 3.

Top 64 Match 2: The Grob - NS Flag vs Nucleous Union (submitted by Strahcoin)
Vote for your favorite and debate in the thread! Prior submitters, remember you can now submit descriptions for flags that haven't gone yet, so do that soon!

My opinion: The Grob is a very visually appealing flag, and the Hal9000/Borg-style eye in the center definitely matches the nation's theme. Nucleous Union is weakened somewhat by the stroke lines around pretty much everything on the flag, making it feel a bit less flag-like than it ought to. So I'm voting for The Grob.

I abstained from the previous round because my flag was involved.

For this one... I'll have to go with The Grob. I love the Nucleous Union flag too, but the purple stripes could have been of a slightly different hue or brightness. The colors are clashing a little - not too much, but noticeable.

The Five-Star Cross was created by the Cosmician Vexillological Organization in 1072917. The Five-Star Cross has three colors, yellow, black and white. The cross represents the expanse of Greater Cosmicium, the four stars on each corner represent four of the five main species of Greater Cosmicium: Humans, Khaazai, Scorpions and Dragons, and the star in the middle represents the unity of Greater Cosmicium, an increasingly ironic thing as the four factions come ever closer to civil war.

You get Yap's spot. Anyone else who wants to submit your flag(s) late, please do so ASAP, and be aware that there are only 3 spots left (so you cannot submit 4 flags).

It's fine, I don't really mind it much.

Anyhow, I cast my vote for The Grob/Grox. Both flags are very original takes on a national flag and simplistic enough to be practical for daily use. Though personally, both flags aren't my cup of tea (but that only made it harder to be subjective), but Grob/Grox have their whole 'Dalek-esque' theme going on which shows on their flag.

The Nucleous Union jack... sort of falls flat. Sorry, mate. I get the nuclear trefoil's meaning, the green might signify leftover radiation or nature, and the purple stripes symbolize... death, maybe? (I recognize a MSPaint flag when I see one, though). It needs some more polish, is what I'm saying, but within character its poor-man's look does work.
