Political Liberties

A: Electoral Process

A1: Is your nation's head of government elected through free and fair elections? I would have to call that a qualified yes, but its not that simple. Most cameroi have no idea who sits on the national council, and it really has so little effect on their lives, that nothing is lost by their not doing so. It is elected indirectly, by the memebers of their local councils, who in the latter case are their neighbors whom they know personally.

A2: Is your nation's legislature elected through free and fair elections? another not so simple. We don't actually have a seprate executive.

A3: Are your electoral laws fair and impartial? we like to think so. Anyone can vote for anyone, no political parties required.

B: Political Pluralism and Participation

B1: Are people free to easily form political parties or organizations? they can, but these play no direct role in the electorial process.

B2: Can the opposition increase its support or gain power electorally? well again, there are no parisan battles. Every voter is a party of one.

B3: Are the people's choices not interfered by nondemocratic forces? there is no incentive for non-democratic forces to seek or abuse power.

B4: Do your country's minorities possess full political liberties and the opportunity to win elections? every individual is a minority of one, so I would have to say basically yes.

C: Government Functions

C1: Do the head of government and national legislature determine policy? being one and the same and no one else other then plebian consensus, there's pretty much no one else to do so.

C2: Are there strong and effective laws and guidelines against corruption? mostly there are strong disincentives built into the system. And there are always the question of deffinicians.

C3: Is your nation's government transparent and open?all minuetes and agendas, other then in times of war, and we haven't had one of those for thousands of years, are publically accessable, on line and to everyone. The actual meetings themselves aren't televised, but everything that goes on, is available both before and after.

Civil Liberties

D: Freedom of Speech and Religion

D1: Is your nation's media free and independent? our media is our internet, and anyone can blog.

D2: Are people free to express their religious preferences in public and in private? consistent with laws agreed upon by mutual consensus, yes. There are no religious exemptions to laws that favor any one belief over another.

D3: Does your nation have academic freedom and does its education system refrain from excessive indoctrination?yes, and this is a very high priority for it. Sciences and arts, useful to the individuals who study and and pursue them, are its entire focus.

D4: Are your people free to express themselves without fear of surveillance or retribution? people are free to watch each other in public places, and this includes people in government. No one is free to harass anyone one else on the basis of doing so.

E: Right to Association

E1: Is there freedom of assembly? yes. Anyone can form a committee, or hold a meeting. There are some reasonable restrictions on where. Such as not obstructing public transit rights of ways, emergency entrences to hospitals, that sort of thing.

E2: Are NGOs free from excessive government interference? yes.

E3: Are trade unions free to organize? yes. However most work is don't in such a way, that the concept is not entirely aplicable.

F: Rule of Law

F1: Is your nation's judiciary independent? courts that adjudicate at the local and personal level generally are, but every village is free to form its own proceedural structure, in accordance with its residents' consensus.

F2: Do your people have the right to due process? we hope, we try, but again this is a local matter. We only try to guarantee that everyone has a right to a change of venue.

F3: Are people protected from unjustifiable violence? again this is local, but our culture is such that i'm sure everything that can be done in this regard, is.

F4: Are your nation's minorities treated equally under the law? every individual is considered a minority of one. The demographic of every village is its own.

G: Individual Liberties

G1: Do your people enjoy freedom of movement?yes. That is practically the only function of our government at the national level is to insure and protect this.

G2: Are your people able to own property and businesses without excessive interference? this is entirely a local option.

G3: Do people in your nation have the right to freely choose their partner and divorce their partner? certainly, though devorces are rare, and people living single all their lives are actually more common.

G4: Are your people free from economic exploitation? thanks to our 'economy' being non-monetary at the national level, as are most nations on the world of lananara, that is a resounding yes.

[quote="Gualimole";p="35389316"]Based on Freedom House's Freedom in the World report, I have decided to create Freedom in NationStates, which will measure a nation's overall level of freedom based on its civil and political liberties. Political Liberties

A: Electoral Process

A1: Is your nation's head of government elected through free and fair elections?
No, while the monarch (generally a queen) CAN be deposed by a referendum and a vote of both chambers (all requiring 2/3 majority) the role itself is hereditary.

A2: Is your nation's legislature elected through free and fair elections?
Yes, sort of. The legislative chamber is selected via sortition, so "free and fair", yes, but not technically elected. There IS an elected chamber, but that is primarily advisory and while it can propose laws it has no authority to pass them.

A3: Are your electoral laws fair and impartial?
Yes, as is the sortition selection, barring that no member of the royal family may be selected or stand for election.

B: Political Pluralism and Participation

B1: Are people free to easily form political parties or organizations?
Yes.

B2: Can the opposition increase its support or gain power electorally?
In the second chamber yes; the first, being randomly selected rather than elected, technically no.

B3: Are the people's choices not interfered by nondemocratic forces?
Yes, the monarch is the head of the executive and royal assent is needed for anything to enter into law.

B4: Do your country's minorities possess full political liberties and the opportunity to win elections?
Yes.

C: Government Functions

C1: Do the head of government and national legislature determine policy?
Yes.

C2: Are there strong and effective laws and guidelines against corruption?
Yes.

C3: Is your nation's government transparent and open?
Yes. All meeting of either chamber are open to the public and broadcast, and much of the internal communication is made public after a short delay (unless nation security issues are present or lives are at stake). Additionally, as mentioned above, royal assent is needed for something to become law; before this happens the legislature must provide the throne with reasoning why the new/change in law is needed, and if she refuses to give her assent she must provide reasoning as to why, all of this is made freely available to the public.

Civil Liberties

D: Freedom of Speech and Religion

D1: Is your nation's media free and independent?
Some media NGOs exist which are free and independent, but much of the media is owned by the state. Best efforts are made to prevent interference and ensure separation, but technically these are not "independent".

D2: Are people free to express their religious preferences in public and in private?
Yes, though religion is generally a private matter as until recently organised religions were outlawed.

D3: Does your nation have academic freedom and does its education system refrain from excessive indoctrination?
Yes.
"We cannot expand our understanding, either of the external or the internal, if we lie to ourselves or to each other." Queen Rachael Avalon (deceased), grandmother of Queen Saara Avalon, during the opening ceremony of the Felswe University library.

D4: Are your people free to express themselves without fear of surveillance or retribution?
Retribution yes, surveillance no. Outside the privacy of ones own home surveillance is omnipresent, though people are free to express themselves regardless.

E: Right to Association

E1: Is there freedom of assembly?
Yes.

E2: Are NGOs free from excessive government interference?
Yes.

E3: Are trade unions free to organize?
Yes, and actively encouraged.

F: Rule of Law

F1: Is your nation's judiciary independent?
Yes.

F2: Do your people have the right to due process?
Yes.

F3: Are people protected from unjustifiable violence?
Yes.

F4: Are your nation's minorities treated equally under the law?
Yes.

G: Individual Liberties

G1: Do your people enjoy freedom of movement?
Yes.

G2: Are your people able to own property and businesses without excessive interference?
Property yes, businesses not so much. Most private enterprise is illegal; non-profit organisations and some small-scale private businesses permitted, but by and large businesses are publicly owned.

G3: Do people in your nation have the right to freely choose their partner and divorce their partner?
Yes.

G4: Are your people free from economic exploitation?
Yes. One of the reasons (indeed the MAIN reason) unions are encouraged is to ensure this remains the case.
