The Kpsit. M/21 (KampftPistolet) was a Dnieguan Submachinegun initially designed at the end of the first Skandaran war as a middle child between the smaller, shorter carbines of the Dnieguan cavalry and artillery, and the then in-vogue self loading stocked pistols. Demands shifted quickly from Dneiguan Vappenamt, who instead demanded a weapon intended for the last 200 meters of the assault. A larger magazine was fitted from the original 10 round internal magazine, initially loaded with 10 round chargers.
Chambered in the relatively powerful 9x26mm cartridge, the design is based on a Husqvarna engineers experience with what was then called "opposing surface locked" recoil system. Fed from 24 round magazines with a gentle curve, the weapon fires a 9 gramme bullet at 440m/s at a rate of 480 rounds per minute. A two stage trigger allows for semiautomatic fire, with a full pull of the trigger causing the weapon to fire in fully automatic.
Trial of the weapon started in 1919 and we're generally favorable; the lack of external locking recesses allowed the otherwise somewhat expensive Husqvarna prototype to defeat the simple blowback Bofors Vappenfabrik design handily. Accuracy was demonstrated as acceptable to 300 meters. The rifle survived a 10,000 round endurance test and suffered 13 failures over 10,000 rounds, nine of these were solved with simple manuvers. The Dnieguan Vappenamt deemed this acceptable and approved the Husqvarna design for production.
Initial orders following trials were for 2800 units to equip № 7 Reg. Stur. Bat. 21, 22 and 23 of the Osgran Grenadiers. The initial deployment of these weapons was against the 72nd Static Division, Gratislavian forces, at the battle of the Harmann river estuary. № 22 Stur. Bat. spearheaded the assault with initially great success, breaking through the lines within an hour and causing a 4 kilometer gain in the day. Dnieguan troops were quick to cite the new weapon as favorable to their efforts, though it was more likely the close coordination of artillery batteries and Dnieguan aero spotting for the artillery was far more beneficial.
By the end of the war Dneigua had produced some 72,100 examples at the Husqvarna Vappen factory and Royal Arms factory in Kettrin. Post war orders continued to 1927 with 122,700 delivered. The weapon was replaced in 1936 by the Kpist. M/33, but soon saw itself in service with some modifications in 1938 due to increasing war time demand of munitions. These would be used to free up Kpist. M/33s from the Dnieguan homeguard and Gendarme, but would soon find themselves on the front line. The more powerful 9x26mm cartridge proved to be popular among some troops who felt the 7.62x25mm cartridge anemic in nature, though the 7.62x25mm was based upon the 9x26mm case. Production of the M/21A, with the Bagram muzzle device (pictured) was restarted due to discovery of tooling in storage at one of Husqvarnas storehouses, with 197,340 produced through 1944.
The weapon would give good service through to the end of 1948, when it was again retired and resigned to the Gendarme. The weapon remained in Gendarme service until 1958, and would prove to be extremely popular on the surplus market. Dnieguan eould give 17,200 as military aid to colonial interests, and the weapon would see service in irregular forces until the 1970s.
