I have a few issues with your app. First the existance of America, I dont think that real world nations exist within Aurora but you will have to ask the others. Also the idea of you raiding weak nations for slaves; I believe that Norvenia is very high on human rights and would not allow that to occur and you would be under serious sanctions from most of the other nations. Finally the nuclear war, I am not sure if the region is ready for such a cataclysmic event to have happened, but again you will have to ask the others.

But I think you are an excellent RPer and would love to have you in Aurora, as I am sure the others would, so I am confident we can work something out.

I think if he replaces America with the Norvenians (who are pretty much Americans.) or the Cookish (who are pretty much a cross between Mexico and the US) we could phase RL references out.

Nuclear war? Probably not.

Raiding weak nations? If you have weak neighbors, you can try to raid them, but I don't think it would end well with two fierce human rights watchdogs in the region.

I like Steel. I think if he can handle these few alterations, he'd make an amazing addition.

Postby The Steel Fraternity » Sat May 04, 2013 11:20 pm

American origins and a nuclear war are both pretty fundamental to the background of the Steel Fraternity, but if you'll allow it, both those things could be integrated in a way that would not effect the rest of the region, or even need to be acknowledged anywhere outside my own factbook.

Skorzenian history as it stands now basically goes:

1869: Atlas Skorzeny leads an American filibustering force to conquer a South American nation and establish a new republic.

1870-1976: The Skorzenian Republic ignores regional politics, only interacting with its neighbors for trade. What little attention they spare for foreign relations mostly boils down to "send support to US in whatever they're doing."

1976: After the Skorzenian love for atomic weaponry leads them to start a limited nuclear exchange in Vietnam, destroying most of their own military and a significant chunk of the USA's, America topples their government and replaces it with laissez-faire corporate rule.

1984: With a Soviet-backed uprising about to topple the corporate state, Skorzenia initiates a limited nuclear exchange.

Chaos, societal collapse, eventual re-emergence of Steel Fraternity ensue.

If I channge this to:

1869: Atlas Skorzeny leads American filibusters to conquer a number of small, disunited west Aurora Major nations south of the Cookish states and establish a new republic.

1870-1914: Skorzenia ignores regional politics, interacting with neighbors only to trade, but also ignores politics outside the region.

1914-1976: Skorzenia continues to ignore regional politics, but begins supporting major US wars outside the region, leading to the same destruction of their military. This all occurs entirely outside the region; no US or any other RL nations ever enter Aurora in relation to these events.

1976: Civilian government of Skorzenia goes bankrupt and collapses without outside influence, leading to the emergence of corporate rule.

1976-1984: Uprisings against corporate rule are funded by socialist Norvenia and the Cookish States, while the different corporations running Skorzenia simultaneously engage in internicine warfare. The corporations also take control of the pre-1976 Republic's nuclear stockpiles.

1984: One of the corporate enclaves, about to be overrun by socialist fighters, is destroyed by a nuclear explosion. The CEO at the location, knowing he was about to be killed by the mob, had detonated his own weapons in place out of sheer spite. The other corporations, mistaking this for an attack, launch their own weapons at each other, leading to the destruction of all major Skorzenian cities and most of their own populations.

1984-1987: Skorzenia is left in chaos as radioactivity within the nation deters outside efforts at relief or military intervention while warlords arise. Prevailing winds blow the fallout from the 1984 War east, out to sea.

1988-1994: The Steel Fraternity re-emerges and takes control of Skorzenia.

1994: Norvenia and the Cookish states are both appalled by the human rights abuses of the Fraternity. However, Norvenia is beset by internal concerns with the implementation of the Christian Socialists' civil rights reforms and the violent backlash against them, while the Cookish are involved in the Hienmenian conflict. So, rather than directly intervening, the two states fund an effort by several small nations bordering Skorzenia on the west (who possess large displaced populations of those driven out of Skorzenia by its current inhabitants) to invade the country and topple the Steel Fraternity.

1994-1996: The Reconquista is defeated by the Fraternity, which proceeds to conquer the nations that tried to overthrow it. New Detroit is formed from part of this territory as a protectorate of Skorzenia. However, many of the westernmost parts of the area now claimed by the Fraternity remain outside direct control.

1996-Present: These hinterlands continue to claim sovereignty as those nations which participated in the Reconquista. However, the Fraternity claims them as part of its territory, and by this time has rebuilt its own nuclear stockpiles. Using nuclear weapons as a deterrent, the Fraternity prevents any outside intervention to aid these states claiming independence, and continues to raid them for proles.

...then there is never any official intervention by any RL nation within the region of Aurora. There is only one initial filibustering force of Americans led by Skorzeny, which no other nation within Aurora ever needs to acknowledge as anything but a bunch of foreigners who showed up to take over some small states that no one else really cared about at the time.

After that, Skorzenia would simply be a nation that remained largely standoffish with the others in the region until recently, when it started getting outright bellicose.

Meanwhile, the unrecognized nations being raided for proles exist in a position vaguely similar to that of Tibet. The international community may prefer to recognize them as independent, but does not out of geopolitical concerns. The Fraternity also maintains a source of new proles (and more importantly, I don't have to completely rewrite the entire economy of New Detroit) without the necessity of constant warfare with other players in the region.

Also, the nuclear war remains contained within Skorzenia, and does not need to throw off the history or current state of any other nation.

Okay. Here's my two cents.

Ardkonia, we've consulted, and we're going to have to deny you for now. You're very new to this game, and your writing - especially basic spelling and grammar - isn't up to our standards. That said, our decision is not final. We'll be keeping an eye on you, and if you spend the next month RPing in such a way that the quality of your writing dramatically improves, we'll take another look at your application. But for now, your application is regretfully denied.

CNA: you are accepted. I believe that Cooke is already in contact with you regarding your place on the map. Congratulations, and welcome!

Steel Fraternity: I'm satisfied. This is a legitimate compromise. In most ways, RL nations don't exist within the Auroran canon, but that's largely a legal fiction - Lyndenberg's Boers had to come from somewhere, after all. And extra-regional wars are no concern of any of ours. It works. The only caveat is that Norvenia, at least, would almost certainly recognize the Tibet-equivalent territories, and provide covert aid to them. The Commonwealth would try to avoid open war, but it would also have no interest in building bridges with the Steel Fraternity leadership, which it regards as entirely illegitimate.

I also think - this is for everyone's notice - that Skorzenia would be a great addition to the region. Frankly, the nation is fantastically written - which covereth a multitude of sins - and it's just such a fantastic bad guy. So far, no one serves that role of being an absolutely horrifying slave-trading jingoistic dictatorship. Aurora needs a bogeyman, and Skorzenia fits the bill perfectly. It would create fascinating tensions between our NATO-equivalent and Skorzenia, and lay the groundwork for all kinds of fun proxy wars/intelligence agent RPs. In short, I think that admitting Steel Fraternity - and making Skorzenia a major power - would add a fantastic new element to the region that would pay dividends not just for SF, but for all the rest of us as well. Irregular as it may be, then, I strongly support this application.

Nation Name: East Slav Socialist Republic/Vostochnoslavyanskiy Sotsialisticheskoy Respubliki
Nation's Form of Government/Ideology: Single party state, maintains opposition parties and a national congress for comedic relief - something known by its members much to their frustrations.
National Leader(s): Nadezhda Volkova
Brief Description of Nation's Culture(s): A very hard working people, they will prefer completion of any task regardless of challenges faced. A troubled history makes the general population lean towards the cold side of decision making, and a widespread apathy towards the totalitarian government is presence largely due to its limited interference in their daily lives.
Brief Description of Nation's Religion(s): Largely state-enforced atheist, in their private lives a sizable number citizens are followers of Islam. Enclaves of other religions are present.
Rough Climate/Topography of Nation (to help determine where on the map you might want to be): Temperate climate, many large forests and a small mountain range in the South. The north of the country is flatter, largely consisting of plains with rolling hills. A small coast is home to a number of former tourist sites and many steel/logging industry based facilities.
Additional Description of Nation (economics, recent history, major characters, special quicks, etc.): VSR's economy is primarily based around the export of raw materials and certain manufactured goods such as heavy machinery, pharmaceutical/medical technology. The 'state' industry, owned by the Premier while having little presence in politics has a major behind-the-scenes presence, while publicly competing with private industries.

The nation existed as a small, quiet nation for most of its existence, up until the 1970s when the political system took a swing towards Soviet-styled government. While it had rapidly advanced the nation forwards, it was believed by many to have stripped the people of many rights they had had, and by the late 80s a popular resistance had formed. The movement was cracked down upon, and by 1990 had boiled into a civil war that lasted until 1994, resulting in peace talks between parties. For several months, negotiations took place to no avail, when a 'moderate' party; self titled the 'Independent Party' had taken power and shut down negotiations. A new offensive had began which lasted for several weeks - the opposition had taken severe losses to manpower and lost much of 'gained' territory, and was forced to sign a ceasefire which while ending the conflict, had been perceived to take measures to punish an economically damaged region, and political leaders 'responsible' had been arrested and given lengthy sentences. Disappearances or others had occurred, and many had looked to seek refuge in other nations. This was not limited to the opposition - aging Soviet era politicians had met ends at suspicious circumstances or were simply told to leave. The leader from 1994-2010, a 'President' Tereshenko had ruled the nation for his years with a primary focus of rebuilding and restoring economic strength - security was not a chief priority for much of his term. While generally seen in a positive light, there were still feelings of resentment to his rule which became apparent late in his term. A rekindled revolutionary movement - suspected of external funding and leadership soon became a thorn in his side and security services were to be updated to modern standards. When he stepped down, the self-titled 'Premier' had started putting policies set by her predecessor in motion, and was very vocal at her first national address that Tereshenkos policies would be fast tracked to restore the nations previous strength. In contrast, she would create policies of her own - many of which backtracked on political freedoms to such an extent that even registering for any party was simply just decoration for identification papers. The large, state run research institutes would be given full freedom to conduct research with minimal oversight, while overtly encouraged to compete even if they were working on the same thing. With the new policies in action, much of the nation had regained solid employment at such a pace that the economy rapidly stagnated without an increased involvement of foreign economies - something stated for accomplishment via the next '3 year plan'

The Premier is a daily figure in the peoples lives, having replaced the previous leader had began to try a more personal approach - regular interviews on state and opposition television, instating frequent national surveys(of which have little use outside of her own amusement. Having a wide spectrum of personal interests, she does try to get involved in a many things as she can, either directly or to just observe.

Roleplaying Example [Note: this is VERY IMPORTANT. A sample must be at least 3 paragraphs, well-written, with proper spelling and grammar. The more samples, the better. If you have written nothing that matches these criteria, please write a new sample here that does.]: http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=209488 <- most recent on this account, older ones exist on another nation
Notes [Questions, comments, requests, etc.]: character RPs are more my thing, so the nation is intended to be an odd, backwards place with little sense of set direction - it makes sense as one is acquainted with the actual characters.
East Slavyanka is an unrecognized state with a population of 22.5 million people, the current President since 2015 is Anna Oktyabrskaya

Alright, i'm completely fine with your decision, although - Please could you keep an eye on me, perhaps i can telegram you some of the RPs i am doing, and perhaps i could send you long long texts of RP or info about my nation? I believe i did not put much efforts into the application, but just spamming it on this thread would even lower my chances of being accepted. I understand your decision as i have not provided much information and rushed alot, but i only want so you atleast look at my real RPing abilities, and think this over in the next month.

I will personally remain in contact with you, and read any RP's you take part in. I'll send pointers and tips when I can, but this is mostly on you. If you get into a real, good, quality RP and do great it'll boost your chances exponentially. You've got potential, so refine it and you'll fit in perfectly.

I like your application. By reading the RP you sourced, I can tell that you're a very good writer that has trouble finding people of the same category as you in regard to skill and creativity. The group will have to deliberate, but I think you'd do nicely with us.

Nation Name: High Kingdom of Estovnia (Alokir Junsegolt se Bronsekaan/Hár Konungsríkið Estola)
Nation's Form of Government/Ideology: Feudal Monarchy (Matrilineal Succession)
National Leader(s): High Queen Kaia Thonronr IV
Brief Description of Nation's Culture(s): The current culture of Estovnia evolved from the raider-esque culture of the ancient Nords, though many similarities still exist. The current political status of Estovnia often feeds into the ancient Nordic culture.
Brief Description of Nation's Religion(s): The major religion in Estovnia is "Gamleiðir," literally translating to "Old Ways," a polytheistic, shamanistic religion that is a blend of the native religion with the traditional Nord religion brought by the Nords. The basis of the religion revolves around the worship of the Trinity (þrenning): Lasska, God of war, might, and power; Thales, goddess of the harvest, fertility, and women; Fjolfrin, God of healing, strength, and the protection of mankind. Aside from this trinity, there are several lesser gods and goddesses, ranging from Runar (God of lakes, rivers, etc.) to Hjotra (Goddess of messengers, lightning, and speed). A plethora of magical creatures, like dwarves, faeries, and elves, are also thought to exist, as are spirits of natures (dubbed spriggans).

Rituals of the Old Ways are often intricate and complicated due to the amount of divine beings that exist and are worshiped. One thing that all rituals share in common is ritualistic sacrifice. Often times animals, such as goats or chickens, are sacrificed in order to lift a curse or hex that spriggans, dwarves, faeries, or elves may have placed on a settlement. Ritualistic sacrifices are also common in order to give thanks or appease a god or goddess. Unlike with other religions, human sacrifice is not discouraged, and surprisingly, is quite common throughout the realms. Perhaps even more surprisingly, these human sacrifices are volunteers, often from noble houses. The collective mindset of the Nord people is that it is considered a great honor to be sacrificed in honor of the gods, as they believe it will lead them straight into the sacred halls of Arsal.
Rough Climate/Topography of Nation: The majority of the country is made up of flat plains/steppes, with taiga and mountains more inland.
Additional Description of Nation: When one steps into the nation, it is best often described as "stepping back in time." The political situation within Estovnia has caused a sort of "stagnation" in social, cultural, and political times, which have often (if one were to use real life equivalencies) been compared to 18th and 19th century Eastern Europe. Democracy is only starting in its infancy with the recently created "Moot," comparable to a senate of sorts, in which the ruling jarl from each of the 18 jarldoms meet once every season to discuss any sort of problems with the nation.

Outside of the jarldoms, a number of local warlords rule the border areas, often raiding the neighboring countries in similar way to viking raids during the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries. This, coupled with the nation's overall backwards way of thinking have put it on edge and have made relations with other countries cool, at best.

The political situation within Estovnia has caused a sort of "stagnation" in social, cultural, and political times, which have often (if one were to use real life equivalencies) been compared to 18th and 19th century Eastern Europe.

I'm not in a position to jump the gun prematurely here, but how would such a country survive amidst modern, industrialized nations? I mean, if they're still in an 18th-century frame of mind, how do they resist international pressure?

Brief Description of Nation's Religion(s): The major religion in Estovnia is "Gamleiðir," literally translating to "Old Ways," a polytheistic, shamanistic religion that is a blend of the native religion with the traditional Nord religion brought by the Nords. The basis of the religion revolves around the worship of the Trinity (þrenning): Lasska, God of war, might, and power; Thales, goddess of the harvest, fertility, and women; Fjolfrin, God of healing, strength, and the protection of mankind.

The Shrailleeni in Cornellia survive by constantly modernizing. I think it's feasible, but hard to do. Such a nation will end up getting the short end of the stick in regional politics.

Eastern Slavia- Everything looks good to me and thus I agree with everything Cooke said.

Estovnia- Again, not too sure about the raiding of other states and your system of government, but then again it is a bit similar to mine so I can't complain. Other than that it looks a really good app and if everyone else is happy, so am I.

I'm prepared to accept this. I want to be sure that you're able to RP reliably, though; we expect posts at least two or three times a week in any threads in which you are involved. If you can guarantee that as a general rule - barring extenuating circumstances - then I see no barrier to your admission, and I'd be glad to have you.

Roleplaying Example: Linky
Notes [Questions, comments, requests, etc.]:

I've got an OOC question, and a couple of IC ones.

First: this is not your only nation. I'm wary of admitting puppets. This is an RPing region, and we expect players to be fairly involved, and to post fairly reliably. I'm concerned that this nation may be a secondary priority for you. So I need some assurance that, if admitted, you would become involved in regional RPs, and would maintain a reasonable posting density in those RPs: two to three posts per week, barring extenuating circumstances. If you're prepared to extend that level of commitment, then I'd be thrilled to have you: your writing is high-quality and your ideas creative.

This leads me to my second set of questions: the very creative nature of your nation raises some practical concerns. There are ways for an economically - and thus technologically - backward nation to survive by raiding more technologically advanced neighbors, but it's going to look less like Vikings and more like the Taliban: warlords hiding in caves, ambushing railways and trucks at night, and then hiding again when the neighbors come a-riding with airstrikes and special forces. Your frontiers are going to be about as porous as Somalia's, and you can expect a certain amount of more or less continuous foreign military intervention in those areas.

None of which is dispositive. It would actually be a neat basis for RPing, and a great additional element for the region. But it takes a gutsy player to agree to having that much foreign meddling in areas that are technically his/her territory. I want to make sure that you're okay with that.

There are a few other points. A nineteenth-century society is impossible to maintain if there's extensive contact with the outside world: Norvenian fast food breaks down feudalism pretty damn fast. So there would need to be strict rules about who and what is allowed into the country - which in turn implies a substantial (and substantially oppressive) state apparatus. Again, that's possible and interesting, but it bears costs as well as benefits: you're not going to have a high standard of living, or a remotely modern military. Moreover, the Moot and Queen would have to distance themselves from the border warlords, or Norvenia (or the Cookish States) would simply stage a regime change operation. But if the central Estovnian leadership did distance themselves in this way, then the democratic powers would probably content themselves with occasional police actions in the border areas and political/economic support for the growing power of the Moot.

In short: I really like this nation. I see great potential. But I need to know that you'd be actively engaged in the region, that you're prepared to be realistic and flexible about how to make your ideas work in Aurora, and that you're ready to accept the costs associated with playing what would definitely be one of the militarily and economically weakest nations in the region. If you're sanguine about all of that, then I'd be very excited to see you join us, and I'd be entirely prepared to work with you to make this an enjoyable and comfortable home for Estovnia. What do you say?

As for the military, if you remember Edom's "Third Elwe War" the weaponry, tactics, etc. will be more or less the same.

Also, if wasn't quite obvious, this nation isn't exactly meant to emulate real world realism, but rather to add an interesting twist and feel to the roleplaying atmosphere that Aurora has conjured up in the passed months.

The hell?

Estovnia is Prem?

Well, why didn't ya say so!

Anyway, while I feel much better about this generally, my specific concerns remain. Given that this is a puppet, will you be able to post regularly? And while I fondly remember the "Third Elwe War," I just want to make sure that you are sanguine with having foreign forces running around your frontiers. And finally, while we certainly don't expect pure realism, I do need you to understand that a country this backward is going to be militarily and economically weak, and will require cultural insulation in order to avoid rapid societal change. Moreover, the transition of some power to the Moot is likely going to be of critical importance; it's the only thing keeping the democratic powers from thinking seriously about regime change.

If all of that's okay with you, then I don't know why we're still talking. You're one of the best, and - with those assurances - I'd welcome Estovnia with open arms.
