There is no government censorship whatsoever, however private ISPs may wish to censor a few things, although the vast majority don't.

There is a small branch in our intelligence agency, the DTS, which sifts through the internet for content which poses a risk to human life, e.g websites promoting terrorism. The people running said websites are thoroughly interrogated, and if found innocent, they are free to go, but implored to take down the website.

As long as you have a computer that can handle it, you can have the Internet. It's also uncensored as well.
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)

The internet is uncensored, there are several, perhaps hundreds, of private ISPs to choose from, as well as free government provided WiFi hotspots across the nation.

There are no rights associated with the internet. Everyone can use it anywhere, anytime, for any reason; so using the internet to facilitate or commit a crime isn't a crime in and of itself, just the crime itself.

Free. A few big private internet providers run it at a small cost. A state-run sifting company called GICD (Glaswegian Internet Crime Detterant) is the only censor.

Thanks to this, we don't have to deal with pesky civil rights issues like banning websites or fighting illegal porn. Nah, we just make the technology so that they can't view it even if they wanted to!

See, the Internet in TurtleShroom has its original utilitarian purpose in mind. We don't use the Internet for leisure, we use it for why it was used in the 1970s and 1980s: for sharing and communication, file distribution, and networking computers to each other to store and obtain information.

SHADY is solely for file and information sharing. It is an ad-hoc item, pretty much like a gigantic Lime Wire. Also, it's much faster to load! On what was 56kbs dialup Internet cables, SHADY goes well over 50mbs on the exact same infrastructure.

Besides, we never had a need for the Internet. Only 22% of the population had Internet access, while 69% had a computer! The Internet was a waste of money to maintain. The infrastructure was simply copper wire strung on existing telephone cables, creating a frequently crashing and painfully slow 56kbs dial-up system. Who needs it?

To learn more, visit the official SHADY thread post.

There are so many things wrong with this post. Everything on the internet is byte streams when travelling computer to computer; "text-only" would actually be more resource intensive than standard internet, since you'd have to have software scanning every packet for images (gl with that, btw), and blocking them. *That* would be a serious violation of end-to-end packet integrity; the rest of the world might just not let you on the internet if you did it.

If you didn't take that approach, the only way to pull off what you have suggested is to ban all software capable of reading the images sent through. In addition to crippling many offline functions of the computer, the totalitarian police state that would be required to pull that off in almost incomprehensible in scope.

Additionally, the underlined is possible only with magic - something I thought you frowned upon...

Anyway, in the Front Range, the government basically just stays out of the internet, although theft, etc, on the internet is treated the same as it would be in real life. Monitoring someone else's internet usage or intercepting their packets without a warrant is considered a serious violation of privacy; any content that needs to be censored (maybe some blogger got his hands on one of our few state secrets, or something) would just be taken down from the site.

Most sites based in the Front Range practice self-censorship for decency simply because of where they are based; so much as swearing will cause loss of substantial traffic to competitors.

Business is pretty much unregulated in Robert Magoo. People are free to serve whatever content they like, (so long as it is not an illegal act itself, such as rape, etc) and ISPs can choose to allow or block any of it. We have no "net neutrality" laws, but actual, true neutrality.

Internet is without censorship after the Glasnost. While some old conservative and pre Glasnost politicians are against this, the majority still finds that free internet is a basic right. Sites like facebook, youtube and google are widely used.

Internet access can be bought from any of our numerous private ISPs. Censorship is illegal unless the person specifically requests censored content and censored content must be marked as such where applicable.

What rights? We don't care for the Internet in exception for subversive activites or illegal distribution of unwanted materials. But in the case, almost all of the ISP's are under the government's control, we don't like Capitalists messing with our systems.

The CyberWeb's main servers are maintained by the Ministry of Infrastructure at the federal level, and has no power to ban or restrict content. Backup servers and filtering services for more prudish parents are provided by private companies. Virtually everyone, to forgive the pun, has a connection in their homes by right.

Internet Service Providers are treated like every other business in the HCSK. Since there is a national sales tax, they pay for what they consume, just like their customers. Like any other form of communication, warrants must be obtained to monitor a lawful resident, or to get IP logs from an ISP. However, ISOC does not need a warrant to monitor any communication system they want, but they are very limited as to what they can do with the information, and embassy lines and systems are off-limits.

Among them, the government has their own ISP company that is used to provide regular internet access on unclassified systems, to include home internet free of charge to military, federal, state, local government employees that may need to do some work from home. The primary caveat is that the government doesn't need to obtain warrants to monitor it; using the system is consent to monitoring. However, government transparency laws do not apply to a home line or system. Government employees may still choose and pay for a private ISP for their private use.

The government doesn't block web sites, but can shut down domestically hosted websites and services for illegal activity. Illegal internet activity incoming or outgoing internationally falls to ISOC, who makes a determination on how it should be handled and by what agency. ISOC handles national security threats themselves, whether remotely via cyberwarfare, or directly by raids, or indirectly by coordinating with foreign intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Most "cybercrimes" fall under one of the following general categories: (In order of severity)
- National Security Threat
- Fraud
- Prostitution (since pornography seems to be the hot topic on here)
--- Charging money, goods, or services for participation as the subject of pornographic materials or live feeds is considered "Prostitution".
--- Paying money, goods, or services for production of pornographic materials is "Solicitation of Prostitution, 2rd Degree"
--- Charging money, goods, or services for pornographic materials or live feed is "Accessory to Prostitution"; in and of itself a minor misdemeanor for 1st offense, but it can escalate into a felony with repeated offenses or extreme cases. Included in this category is knowingly participating in the production of pornographic materials or live feeds with reasonable knowledge that it will be charged for.
--- Paying money, goods, or services for pornographic materials or live feed is "Solicitation of Prostitution, 3rd Degree", a misdemeanor usually punishable by fine.
--- If the subject(s), the producer, and the distributor have not been payed in money, goods, or services, no crime has been committed.

- Malicious Damage
- Harassment
