The only debates I ban on NSG are those that revolve around things like "who is better? Kirk or Picard?" That I move to Forum 7.

I've been on and off NS for a few years under different names.

One thing I have noticed from people who come from Jolt is this 'superiority complex'. As though everyone who wasn't from Jolt is beneath them. It's like one big inside joke.

And yes, to me it does seem the Mods are a little 'testy' as of late. But I understand why.

A lot of it is baiting coming from both sides of whatever the issue may be. Recently that issue has been God and such. Both sides really need to cool down.

But then making threads like 'God doesn't exist' and honestly not giving real reason why not is a essentially a slap in the face to people who believe in God. Then suddenly the thread-maker is like 'Not my fault if they get offended.' I've noticed a tendency in these threads that those on the Atheist/Agnostic side all band together and constantly berate and belittle those on the other side. I've also noticed it tends to be the exact same people as well so there's a group dynamic to it. On the other side is usually 1-3 who believe in God, but may not be the of the same religious affiliation which makes their arguments different from one another's and they become overwhelmed by the 4-5 Atheist who aren't going to have much difference in their argument and even if another one's argument is bullshit, the rest will come in to back it up.

Typically in these arguments the religious people start behind the 8-ball because there's typically only 1-2 of them, the Atheist all know each other, have argued together and know exactly how to frustrate the religious person and openly mock them.

Kinda like a group of bullies in high school who pick on a person and pick on a person, then when that person snaps the teacher walks up and only see the bullied kid snap and that kid's in detention and the bullies are laughing their asses off.

And well...that's my take on it all.

And this really is whambulance material. Atheists to not exist to rain in on your little party. We do not gang up to bash theists. We will argue against you. And, gasp, some may actually disagree with you. While HKII's thread was stupid and trolling, she does not represent all of us. You are putting a label on everyone based on some.

Yes, there are cases where I have felt the urge to tell a person to grow a thicker skin. I remember seeing Fris write that very statement to a few posters on Jolt and including a picture of a pug when doing it.

It is not the goal of the mods to stifle debate. The problem arises when people don't heed kind reminders to not engage in behaviour which often has a domino effect on the rest of the thread. Some times it is avoidable with some classical dodge around the point dances employed by some. Other times passions run high some tend to run head long into the fray, and that's when we witness the catastrophic effects of the domino effect.

I know for myself I would let a number of threads live even if they were charged. I am speaking for myself and not the others at this time. Do not consider this more than just one mod's opinion. I am only telling you what I can. It has never been my M.O. to purposely lock threads I disagree with. I have only locked when there is no point to it (i.e.: it's spam, or it is strictly to troll/bait). This is not a ruling; it's just an opinion.

The only time there is a problem is when someone starts to attack the poster and not the post. When a person purposely baits other people in order to get an angry response. If people remember the mantra: attack the post, not the poster, we would have fewer problems.

I think that most mods do a good job, some do not, but you have that everywhere. And I also understand that sometimes even the 'good' mods close down a thread to soon. But if it happens too much, it will have consequences: good debaters will leave the battlefield. And it's not entirely the fault of the mods: the new people go start crying in the Moderation section too early and too soon. Hello? This forum is designed to debate...

For the others: I don't feel like Jolt members are superior, I even like the 'fresh' meat. The new ones have the same rights as the 'old' Jolt people: nothing more but also nothing less.

About the God doesn’t exist thread… Sure some (Christian) people will not like my idea about it, but that’s no way a reason to call me a dumb fucker or even suggest to kill me. I didn't phrase a single line, I explained also why I feel that way. The concept isn't even new. It's originated from great thinkers of the 17th and 18th century.

I'm pretty sure that most atheists don't get their knickers in a twist overmuch about that kind of thing. Nor do most religious people get all that offended. That topic was really just a Baseless Insult Match, since there is very little proof both for and against there being an all-controlling God, in any sense, biblical or more generally 'deist'.
