Things that were good on the old forums:
the titles
various long gone posters

Things that were bad on the old forums:
Ability to actually post

Things that were good on the Jolt/OMAC forums:
setting more than 15 posts per page
multi quote
time warps

Things that were bad on the Jolt/OMAC forums:
OMAC
word filters
ads
being banned for >:( reasons
Time warps
Unresponsive hosts, admins, and mods
NS2

Things that are good on the these forums:
No OMAC
No word fillters (ahem: nigger, cunt! I've been looking for an excuse to post those words just because we can without a nanny now. :))
The admins and mods are actually responsive

Things that are bad on these forums:
post review
15 posts per page instead of 40
no muti-quote

Poliwanacraca wrote:I agree with pretty much everything listed so far. Jolt certainly had its issues, and OMAC got pretty evil there towards the end, but I miss multi-quote, thread previews, the simple black-and-white style, and being able to stay logged in indefinitely instead of being randomly logged out several times per day. I also utterly loathe the "Someone else has posted something! Therefore, you have to tell us AGAIN that you actually want to post!" feature, which, on my slow connection, means a reasonably active thread will often demand to know if I REALLY want to post as many as seven or eight times before I actually get to post. Plus, this forum always loads much slower than Jolt did for some reason - I know a lot of people have said the opposite, but it's definitely slower for me (and always loads first as weird overlapping text, to make it even more annoying).

Somebody had to. As the George Mallory quote oft attributed to Sir Edmund Hillary goes, "Because it is there." :)

Those are words I wouldn't ordinarily use, but telling me "You aren't allowed to say that!" is not the ideal way to shut me up, and is rather likely to encourage me to say it, as we both know. ;)

Jolt was fine until after OMAC came in and starting putting IN POST ADVERTISEMENTS- Giant images in the body of the first post on every page of a thread. I find in post advertisements unacceptable in any form, but the huge images were extra annoying, and I'm glad those in charge of NS agreed with me. It was seriously killing the forums for me.

If by 'their adaptation' you mean 'vanilla phpBB3 with a few preferences changed here and there, and some under the hood work to hook it into the game', then sure.

The logouts can be mildly annoying, but I've taken to just clicking on the NationStates link at the top instead, which has the nice side effect of keeping my nation active, and letting me check telegrams and things (albeit normally for TG spam).

Jolt made it possible to do a forum search of your name, so that you could reply to anyone who replied to you. You can do a search here, but it won't find your name amid the quote pyramids, which is a downgrade from Jolt. Other than that, I'm perfectly satisfied with this forum. It's just that I liked to reply to people who had addressed me directly. I think it's important to follow up on statements if someone asks you what the hell you're talking about. It makes for a better discussion.

Jolt had several features I miss. But I don't miss having to worry that someone I don't know, whose ability and judgment I have no knowledge of, can come in and wipe out one of MY GUYS for saying something perfectly legal in NS terms. (For purposes of this argument, youse is all 'MY GUYS'.)

Or even for saying something not quite legal, but only slap-worthy.

Nor do I miss the feeling of having to be constantly on watch to protect our players from corporate over-enthusiasm.

It's also reassuring to know that mods' powers will arrive on the day they're modded and won't inexplicably disappear, and we will be able to tell players, "I've asked for something to be done about that" and know that something will be -- same day, same hour, even.

EDIT: I wrote this down so I can come back to it when I'm moaning about lack of "hover" and multi-quotes and log-outs and that thing about not deleting your own posts.

Aye. This, plus the lack of having to wait for hours for the jolt forum to load on certain days, as well as the removal of in post ads is a bigggg plus. I can live without multiquote for that.

I liked preview and the green arrows. I liked the high post count on my main nation. I even liked some of their glitches (time warps ruelz).

I hated not being able to post with several nations. I really hated ad-obscured first posts. And kicking someone for an honest opinion on NS2 was over the top.

Well, I liked the Jolt forum better for it's features, less so for its lack of moderation (or the restrictions it placed on forum moderators).

So let's just say that I miss the Jolt forum, but not enough to bother to leave this one.

Hear hear!

So, given the fact that this forum is supposed to be more suited for its users' wishes, how about giving us the chance to click "No" somewhere to do away with that function. I don't give a rat's ass about what someone else has said meanwhile, especially when I'm starting my comments by replying to the OP's opinion/question.

Oh, and I dislike most of the smilies here. Too space-consuming.

It's International Incidents forum has 10% less n00bs and 20% more good roleplay. And when you quoted something they had little arrows so you could go to the original post, especially if it got snip'd. The convenience of being able to see telegrams while on the forums is removed because I'm logged out of the gameplay portion rather often.

*points to current post count* I had over 1600 on Jolt. I'm still in the single digits here.

Somehow I preferred the old Jolt forums. It seemed more like a full-featured forum. Despite the work that has been put into this new NS official forum, it still feels like a tacked-on extra rather than an integrated part of the game. I assume there will be updates and enhancements eventually, but it just doesn't feel like the complete forum package that Jolt offered.

I am glad to see an end to the in-post ads that OMAC (A curse on their CEO for all time) decided to add, but that was my only complaint there. I don't know how the RP forums compare, because I spent all my time in the General forum. OMAC destroyed a good thing instead of making the simple fixes it needed.
