I am not afraid of driving across bridges.
But when traffic stops on the bridge and I am on it.... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaah, not a good feeling.

Cargo ships are pretty big. Is it even possible improve bridges to the point that they can take a hit from a cargo ship?

Not comparable to the Key Bridge or anything, but there's a four-lane bridge over a river right before an intersection on my daily drive. Very often, traffic will be backed up while waiting here, and I'll frequently be stopped on the bridge.
It was here where I learned that, apparently, bridges wobble slightly as cars pass over them. It was here that I also learned that this sensation is an excellent way to strike a deep dread into my heart.
I'm not a bridge expert, or an engineering expert, so I choose to believe that it is designed to do this to not be rigid. Please do not feel free to correct me, as this belief brings me much comfort.

What I think is scarier is standing beneath a large bridge or overpass, and hearing the creaks and bangs as the vehicles pass overhead.

Economic Freedom Land wrote:Once again a senseless loss of life, we might've just lost the next great entrepreneur who would've carried us forward to a new era of prosperity. The clear and rational solution to this is to privatize the American roadways, once some healthy competition is added to the mix things will improve drastically, with rational agents choosing to use the roads which are best maintained, while those that don't will be forced to improve. With the government involved there's no real accountability, no real urgency to make things better, I say that we'd be better off privatizing the whole bloated worthless state, but that's a discussion for another time
For a longer read on why we should privatize our road ways read this, there's even an appeal to Mother's Against Drunk Driving, sadly even though the logic was on the side of progress the organization was too scared by a truly radical proposal which would solve the deeper systemic issues that come with having a state
