I don't wish for her death but, hopefully, when it happens (whether it is sooner or later) then we will finally see more and more countries drop their ties to the monarchy and become good and proper democracies. Maybe even the UK itself, tho that's probably too wishful a thinking to actually happen.

Some of us Americans admire the British and our old Queen - not to detract from our value of independence, just stating my admiration for the Monarchy there. Queen Elizabeth II has, in my opinion, been quite a figurehead. I sometimes envy England.

No matter one's opinion on monarchies or the UK in general, one has to admit one thing: Elisabeth II. is very dutiful and diligent in her work and was so for well over seven decades. The love and adoration many people in the world, be it the Brits themselves or from elsewhere, feel for her does not come from nowhere (yes, it is not universal, not even in the UK, I know, but she is more liked then her son or her grandson and his wife).
I mean, with her, it's a bit like with Franz Josef: People went to school while she was Queen, their kids went to school while she was Queen and there are certainly enough people, who's grandkids went to school while she was Queen - it will be the end of an era.
I hope, that she doesn't give reason to activate Operation London Bridge any time soon.
Or, that if she gives reason to do so, that it is at least short and painless.

When I first saw the headline come up on my news feed, I wasn't unduly concerned given that there have been a few similar ones over the last year or so and it's been no secret that Her Majesty has been in declining health recently. The seriousness of the present situation didn't strike me until I started getting calls from family members about it (everyone in the family knows how I feel about the Queen, as I imagine most of NationStates does by now). Since then I've been keeping a close eye on the news. It's a scenario that we have all known was coming, but it still feels surreal. I am praying for Her Majesty and am grateful to everyone else in the UK, the commonwealth realms and abroad who is doing the same.

I am reminded of being 8 years old and watching the broadcast of John Paul II’s death. How we watched the Vatican for days and days until they turned out the light. It was a very somber event, and strangely mystifying. The same atmosphere seems to surround Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and I hope her health improves. Her most recent pic at Balmoral showed a very frail queen, though one who seemed to be keeping in good spirits.
