The whole point of populism, good Munk, is to have at least a modicum of popularity with a certain key. If no key supports such a move, then it is not populist. Besides, this is Europe we're talking about, only Belarus(and technically the Vatican but it's never really enforced) have the death penalty.

Actually the Vatican abolished the death penalty in 2001. Russia hasn’t technically abolished it but they haven’t carried out an execution since 96, even Belarus hasn’t killed anyone since 2019

Well, folks, the vote was today and the big story is that there will be a Socialist Majority Government.

This is only PS's second majority in post-Carnation history and the first majority government to be elected since 2005. PS won almost every constituency except for Madeira where PSD sill leads, so PS gets an absolute majority of four. Costa, however, says he will not shut the door to dialogue with smaller parties and still hopes for a coalition of some kind.

Here's the almost full totals(the 4 expat seats won't be known for some time) for who's going to Sao Bento, seats, percentages, and changes:

Turnout: 57.96%(up nearly 10% from '19)

PS: 41.68%
PSD(plus smaller alliances in Madeira and the Azores): 29.27
Chega: 7.15
IL: 4.98
BE: 4.46
PCP-PEV: 4.39
CDS-PP: 1.56
PAN: 1.53
LIVRE: 1.49

Now for the seat totals:

PS: 117(+9)
PSD: 76(-3)
Chega: 12(+11)
IL: 8(+7)
PCP-PEV: 6(-6)
BE: 5(-14)
PAN: 1(-3)
LIVRE: 1(=)
CDS-PP: 0(-5)

A socialist majority isn't bad per se, but I still would have preferred them being in a minority government and having to rely on a more left-wing party like LIVRE or PAN (or preferably BE) for support. Still, better than a right-wing coalition.

It's also unfortunate that the far-right has reached Portugal now too, though it was going to happen eventually.
