Interesting to see conservative pundits and politicians who've spent the better part of two years downplaying COVID deaths suddenly shifting today to return to their act that 3,000 deaths is a lot of deaths.

...just learned that one of the household staff has The Coof. With grandmother, aunt and cousin at the beach house, they're fine, but I have to stay at home pending a swab test on the other household staffer and possibly myself. The other staffer got Round One of Sinovac 2 weeks ago while I got J&J last month; the staffer with The Coof IIRC had his shot deferred.

Hey Huskar, is vaccine hesitancy more common with Unionists or Republicans?
Unionists would be, at least from my experience but a sizable majority of them support Vaccines and lockdown restrictions.

Some recent polling shows that Unionists, well, Protestants (vast majority of whom are Unionists) are more hesitant when it comes to vaccines being given to Children in comparison to Catholic voters, and are also more supportive of ending lockdown restrictions by the end of the month, though that's mainly with DUP voters and that might be down to the current First Minister being DUP as its his plan. UUP voters are majority opposed to it as are Sinn Fein and Alliance voters.

POLL QUESTON 5 - COVID RESTRICTIONS: Do you agree with NI First Minister Paul Givan’s suggestion that all Covid restrictions should be lifted by the end of September? (pg 22 onwards)

DUP: 57% YES, 30% NO, 13% DONT KNOW
UUP: 29% YES, 55% NO, 16% DONT KNOW
SF: 14% YES, 75% NO, 11% DONT KNOW
APNI: 13% YES, 85% NO, 5% DONT KNOW

So the DUP support ending all restrictions, but UUP and APNI don't, and a large chunk of APNI voters come from a Unionist background, and SF voters are overwhelmingly against it. Though doesn't include SDLP or OTHER parties in this which is odd. But the opposition here could be partially driven by political opposition.

POLL QUESTION 6 – COVID VACCINES: Do you think Covid vaccines should be offered to ALL children? + Would you allow your child to get the Covid vaccine? (pg 27 onwards)

Protestant Voters: 58% YES, 4% YES (Wouldnt Allow), 22% NO, 16% DONT KNOW
Catholic Voters: 75% YES, 5% YES (Wouldnt Allow), 10% NO, 10% DONT KNOW
Other Religion Voters: 49% YES, 2% YES (Wouldnt Allow), 38% NO, 11% DONT KNOW
No Religion Voters: 72% YES, 1% YES (Wouldnt Allow), 15% NO, 12% DONT KNOW

When it comes to vaccines and children people of other religious backgrounds, say Islam, Hinduism etc seem to be the more hesitant overall but out of the two main blocs, yes Protestants (And thus Unionists) would be more hesitant but still majority back them being given to kids and i would wager a majority of them still probably support keeping some form of lockdown restrictions in place.

TBH with Covid began hitting around 5,000 deaths a day several times earlier this year, its hard to really feel like 9/11 was that devasting. I know it was and this proably due to me not being not born when it happened, but when Covid was and is still killing simlar amounts of, if not more, people daily, the 9/11 death toll does not seem so massive anymore.

In more less happy news: Rosa Parks is now also as new comparison - with a "we will not comply" slogan.

It is however funny to note that the mostly white christian opposition to vaccinations has to compare their discomforts with the historic oppression of other population groups due to them being unable to find one in their own history.

This may be callous, but I was 5 years old when 9/11 happened, and I was completely unaware that anything even happened till I was 11 or 12. When I learned 9/11 happened, I did not understand the big deal over only 3,000 lives when I heard of so many other deaths due to heart disease, cancer, smoking, floods, earthquakes, war, car accidents, etc...

Though my father did die when I was 12 and I have had a lot of relatives die (I had no living grandparents by the time I was 18) throughout my life, so I guess I am a little desensitized to grief. When one of my dogs died last January, I cried, I felt sad, I felt angry, but I was able to look at my emotions dispassionately because I was used to the cycle of grief, instead of just lashing out in anger like I may have when I was a pre-teen without knowing why I was angry, I could feel my anger (one of the phases of grief) and know why I was angry (rational or not) and just ignore my anger (after punching my pillow once or twice). I have experienced many kinds of grief as well, including once where I was emotionally numb, not feeling happy or sad or angry or anything. So maybe I am just desensitized to the idea of 3,000 deaths, but my personal beliefs and morals call for me to love everyone unconditionally and to value every single human life and seek to improve the quality of life for every sentient being without exception.

It's okay to be desensitized. It doesn't make one a psychopath, it is in fact a natural, protective process. Just like how a human's skin will produce melanin following sun exposure to better endure it, the mind creates the armor of desensitization.

If I turn on the TV and hear about a school shooting and spend the rest of the day feeling horrible about it, what good have I done for the world? We care primarily about our own people, it's human nature. I'd choose my wife over a million strangers if I had to.

For those of us who it did effect it was a lot different. I didn’t see the planes actually hit the towers, I was enjoying my beach vacation at the time, but I did see the TV footage later that night. The glow of the fire/lights and the smoky haze of NYC in the background is something I’ll never forget.

And just at little under 11 years I’d be signing up to go to war. 9/11 changed the world. And spawned two wars.

I was also 5, but my mother cried for weeks and I didn't understand why. Then I saw Bin Laden on TV, and in my heart and soul I knew he was evil.

9/11 killed 3,000 people, but those 3,000 people all had families and cities. Really, it broke the spirit of a nation, coast-to-coast. For me, it changed my household and made us feel strongly about our nation's safety. Since then, we've grown-up and seen a lot more people die in massive tragedies. It's hard to cry over what feels like endless tragedies. But 9/11 was an attack on our soil, and in NYC it still resonates now. Rudy Giuliani is a zombie now, but during 9/11 he was the face of "America's Best".

It's a shame to see how much our leaders have forgotten what mass death on our soil looks like, or have sold their souls to corporations, private contractors, and to spreading misinformation and distrust among the people. Our leaders who promised to guide us through horrors untold turned around and threw us to the dogs, some (like DeSantis) without qualms. It's not about defending the American people or inspiring their spirits, tribalism over COVID abounds and we have lost sight of the united spirit we had 20 years ago.

In the words of Darryl Worley, one has to ask, "Have You Forgotten?" Maybe we haven't, but our government leaders have, and that is why it is so hard to feel anything but emptiness looking at the mass deaths from COVID happening around us. They are feeding us to a death machine for the sake of political advancement, successful or otherwise. Therefore, you are right. We must take care of each other, and we must continue to stand against this death machine.

I still remember being glued to a news radio station riding a standing-room-only route 95X bus traveling on I-5 northbound near the Taylors Ferry Rd. exit, when the radio news announcer stopped what he was saying and said the first tower had collapsed. I knew at that moment war would follow.

Coronavirus is like September 11th, 2001, happening everyday, but be a lot better by now if more people would just get a fricking vaccine.

Interesting they that want to be part of the infamous line-up of respectable groups of people that were particularly concerned with pure blood.

It is quite interesting that the comparisons made by anti-vaxxers are either comparing themselves to oppressed groups that many of them weren't part of (Jews under Nazi Germany, African Americans under Segregation), or fairly explicitly racial supremacist comparisons (literally every group I can think of that cared about pure blood ranged from snobbishly racist to genocidal).

I'm sure there's absolutely no implications, intentional or otherwise, to this chain of perfect coincidences. /s
