Something that didn't occur to me until I saw it pointed out, the ICE detention centres in Texas are also without power and are freezing cold. People whose welfare is the responsibility of the federal government are in life-threatening danger. Is Joe Biden going to let innocent children freeze to death because they don't have the right paperwork to be allowed into the US?

Probably. No other answer as I see it. Once America commits to committing war crimes, it's hard to get us to stop.

I wonder what he'll talk about..

Former president Donald Trump will address the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, in Florida next week, about the future of the Republican party and the conservative movement, a source familiar with the plan told Reuters on Saturday.

The CPAC meeting will be held in Orlando, Florida from 25 to 28 February, with Trump speaking on the final day, Reuters reported.

“He’ll be talking about the future of the Republican party and the conservative movement,” the source reportedly said. “Also look for the 45th president to take on President [Joe] Biden’s disastrous amnesty and border policies.”

Perhaps it's a convention to always write out the full name of a president, or former president.

I do appreciate "Former president Donald Trump" though. The custom of addressing former Presidents as "mr. President" should end: it has overtones of royalty which I've never liked and must be very confusing for time travellers.

Personally I plan to keep only half of his title in use: "mister".

It's Saturday! So, remember those small reforms Biden made? He just took a step back (this article tries and fails to defend it too), but of course we can expect him to close the concentration camps on the border... right? That's right, Biden’s new ICE guidance completely backtracks from 100-day deportation moratorium promise, expands enforcement priorities.

Depressing, but not unexpected.

This effect is observed in Gulf States, where the state generates income from natural resources on state-owned property, giving it a massive income which is not dependent upon taxation of its citizens, and then it uses UBI-like programs and investment into development to give its citizens some of its economic resources. It is a reversal of the Western social-contract upon which democracy is based. To put it in terms Americans would be more familiar with: No representation without taxation.

If there is no representation without taxation, then half of US citizens aren't represented. You've mangled a Revolutionary War slogan that wasn't all that rigorous to begin with.

The Gulf States that provide free electricity and so on, do not illustrate a bad downward trend of democracy, in fact the opposite. Democracy anywhere is a demand of the middle class and capitalists, not of the "workers". Any social contract requiring people to work to survive is just a figment of your political imagination, and does not account for the rich, for charity, or for unpaid work eg of parenting.

You don't like UBI but you haven't given one valid reason. And anyway, aren't you an authoritarian? The workers being dependent on the state should be good, surely?

I'm an anarchist. I sometimes provide support for authoritarian arguments because I don't agree with the idea of political universalism. I don't believe politics* (which is inherently transactional) is compatible with the fundamental dignity of human beings.

I think it might even be an improvement to what Obama did since it requires an aggravated felony whereas Obama required "significant misdemeanor"
