Because now said dying stock has value and investors want said stock.

They can't buy or profit off of this stock now, however, because r/Wallstreetbets is refusing to sell the frankly ludicrous amount of shares they collectively bought, causing turmoil for brokers, hedge fund managers, and the market in general.

But don't worry, I'm sure the money will trickle down eventually...

I do have to wonder what the overarching consequences for this are going to be.

The stock market once again proves itself to be one of the most irrational and made-up parts of the economy.

I'm just here in awe because of the way they lost 5 billion just like that. I mean, I know they are rich and all, but wow... $ 5,000,000,000 gone, eh. Way enough for more than a billion meals. I guess unstable platforms have their consequences.

Yes. Because now they are going to lose a lot of money.
Same is probably (but not necessarily) true for the redditors - but they are not doing it for profit.

I would actually be far happier if they were Robin Hooding that fat stack for good causes, rather than it just in reality disappearing into the ether.

Game Stop is out of stock of high end consoles causing demand to go up causing many to upset to the recent event that the end consoles are not the original price anymore causing high end consoles to pay more in demand than it actually being made out in a factory not quick if your high end console to last.

Nationalize the bastards.

Actually, I'm thinking all the money inserted through Quantitative Easing was put in through banks. And government didn't really get its money's worth: too much of it went to the already rich.

Yeah, nationalize the bloody banks. If an "investor" comes in with a proposal to borrow money and use it to sell a company short, hold them down and write "scumbag" on their forehead with an indelible pen. Profiting from another's downfall is inherently bad, because it incentivizes destruction not growth.

It won't even cost much. Simply declare that all businesses are worth their assets minus their liabilities, not "market capitalization" in shares, and the banks will cost next to nothing. Nationalize the banks *waves puny fist*

...the console shortage isn't strictly relevant to what is happening here, the short selling of "stock" is referring to the stock market, rather than console stock.

No, it is not. Don't let the optics of beautiful justice fool you, this is a fluke. They regularly get away with this shit and will continue to do so.
I'm prepared to change my mind if people can pull this off regularly and the first hedge-fund managers join a breadline.

Selling short needs to be illegal, because - depending on the volumes involved - the act of selling itself will provide the desired drop in prices.

Manufacturing more demand than there are consoles, should be a career-ending mistake. Corporation-ending in fact. Unfortunately consumers are not unionized and thus cannot act in their own collective interest.

"Amateur" becomes "professional" when you make money from it. It's all about knowledge disparity and nobody who wins in this game deserves to be a hero.

I disagree.

1. Amateur becomes professional when you make others money from the market.

2. The red edit folks here are the heros. They saw an opportunity offered by the market and took it. If they bought at 30 and sold at 90 for merlin to cover their short position, good on them.

102% shorted? You take that risk, you better be able to afford to cover it.
