In fact our modern positional numbering system was invented by Indian Hindus, then adopted by Arabs (likely shortly before the arrival of Islam), eventually reaching us via the latter; but the Arabs didn't invent the system.

If left to the Arabs, it would have been ٩/١١; but calling it tesa'a / hedosher (or even hedosher sibtamber*) might be a bit obscure for NSG.


* note that I only know Egyptian Arabic, so apologies if this pronunciation isn't quite right for those of you who speak other varieties of Arabic

I am twenty-seven years old.

On the day of 9/11, I was in my second grade classroom, smiling, when the intercom suddenly went off and demanded a moment of silence. I asked what happened and was still smiling, blissfully unaware of what happened. I can tell you exactly what direction I was facing and even stand in the general vicinity of the location.

I would not see the actual footage of 9/11 for years after, but I was told what had happened; I understood it well enough to write a paper on it, which was received so well that they published it and distributed to the entire schoolhouse.

I honestly get annoyed with how much people obssess over it after all these years. It's like pearl harbor to me.

It SHOULD be obsessively remebered. It was a scar in the minds of countless men. We do not have skin in Pearl Harbor, for we are young. It was our Pearl Harbor, and we should never stop considering it a big deal. Our grandchildren will look at it like we see Pearl Harbor, but I myself will never lose a passion for remembering it.

I was in 3rd grade, I was at home so I think I was sick. I was in the living room at one point with my mother because I was starting to feel a little better when the television started showing what was happening. I don't remember what I thought for the most part, I remember the images of the planes flying into the towers and them collapsing. Inagine being an Arab American on 9/11 and knowing when they revealed the identity of the attackers that everyone is gonna start wrongfully blaming you for shit you werent even involved in.

Or even worse, imagine being someone who just happens to look arab (like a sicilian or a Sikh or an Armenian or a Greek or Sephardi Jew) and knowing you'll be blamed for shit no one from your ethnic group or religious group was involved in.

I will never forget one of my students, Mariam, gave me a GORGEOUS scarf at the end of the year, and I thanked her and said I appreciated it but it wasn't necessary -- she told me it was because out of all her teachers, I was the only one who treated the Muslim kids the same on June 13th the same as I did on September 10th -- that the rest of her teachers didn't call on them much, got mad and called home more...

I literally cried after she left, to think that they'd been treated badly in SCHOOL, where we're supposed to make them feel SAFE, over something that wasn't their fault.

I feel bad for Muslims and Sikhs who have to go though stuff like this. Thankfully, the most people I know get are dirty looks and insults. I don’t know if my luck will, change, but I pray it doesn’t.
