Vietnamese have been here since the late 1970's. Just like the US actually: we screwed up their country so we owed them something. It was actually a Liberal (center-right) Prime Minister, Fraser, who invited so many in. There's a weird parallel with the US, maybe sparked by that Vietnam War we were both in, that around about the same time the Democrats kicked out their racists, the equivalent Labor party here finally abandoned the last of its White Australia Policy.

Just for a little while Liberal and Labor were on the same side, pro-immigration. Sadly they're both on the wrong side now.

Anyway, about the Vietnamese. They've been here long enough, mainly. They get into small businesses like bakeries and newsagents that born Australians wanted to get out of because of small profit margins. They push their kids in school, and someone you meet in a professional setting who looks Vietnamese is quite likely a born Australian with the accent and everything. If you get out among the working class there's resentment of them, because they've done so well, but everyone gets that.

With the Chinese it's more complicated. But I wouldn't say there's widespread racism just because they look Chinese ... it's that long history. But racists do challenge them in public, wanting to know if they're "real Aussies". Or refusing to be treated by them in a hospital until they're told the doctor grew up in Bankstown and went to the public school ...

Yeah, we're I'm from, most of the places have Vietnamese underneath the english because Victoria has a lot of Vietnamese.
yet very little chinese, which is why I love Vietnamese food and hate Chinese food, because there aren't any chinese food restuarants.

We're starting to get there. Particularly with Covid-19 people are waking up to China not being a 'great trading partner', but instead a real threat to us.

Our leading of the calls for an investigation of the roots of Coronavirus even under the shadow of China's finger waggling proves this. Hopefully in future we rely more on ourselves, and nations not inherently opposed to our way of life.

Actually UK interests own more agricultural land than Chinese ones do. So do American interests.

2016 source
2019 measuring land ownership in hectares isn't very useful, since water is a much more limited resource and a better measure of the farming value of land. China does lead but the US is a close second. Neither is anywhere near a majority.

Foreign ownership of land (any land) should actually be banned. I'd prioritize residential land, since buying-out farmers to invest and make new use of agricultural land isn't entirely a bad thing, while driving up housing costs to extract profit to foreign investors has no evident benefit to our country. Leases rather than freehold, I'm really not sure about. Profit gets exported from leases, but there isn't the concern about capital growth.

Other than strategic land like ports, or thoroughfare for roads and rail, there's no good reason to favor UK or US investors over Chinese ones. Why should we give any foreign nationals the opportunity to speculate without adding any value?

So you're maybe part right. Ban Chinese ownership, but only as part of the bigger problem.

Polls are now closed in Queensland.

Here's ABC's live stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1ilCy6XrmI

And since it will be some hours according to ABC, I won't be up for it, I have my own election to be awake for in a few days. No offence meant to you guys, of course.

Queensland State Election (Edited 10:36 Qld Time)

Australian Labor Party 47
Liberal-National Party 33
Other 7
In Doubt 6

Labor seem to have exactly half the seats. Coalition with Greens likely, or with other independents, possible.

Well, ABC's predicting 52 for Labor, so they won't need a coalition, which is good for them because a coalition with the Greens would've put them in an awkward position considering how Queensland went in the federal vote last year.

Yep, seems like Queensland's Labor is about to win a third consecutive term in government, which I find strange considering that they are a pretty conservative state (LNP won 22 out of QL 30 seats in the Australian HoR last election). But hey, I'll take it!

Friendly Jordies, ha? That guy is an ALP shill. Notice how, according to him, the ALP can never do anything wrong, whilst the LNP can never do anything right? I've never seen a more biased partisan political commentator in Australia. Dan Andrews fucks up hotel quarantine and he releases a video titled "Leave Dan Andrews alone" even though if the LNP made the same fuck up, you know he would have created the same video but instead, criticing how corrupt the LNP. This is all the same time whilst completely ignoring the branch stacking occuring in Victoria, knowing full well that if the LNP had done something less corrupt, he'd be all over it. This is the guy who yells at Berejiklian for her mishandling of the bush fires, even though QLD and Victoria had fires which were just as bad. Is Gladys responsible for the fires in East Gippsland or Kangaroo Island? He criticises the LNP for playing SJW politics once, ever, and never mentions the fact that the ALP plays SJW politics all the time. Everyone in the media is evil according to him, because they don't worship at the feet of the ALP, and dare suggest that the ALP sometimes makes mistakes. Of coarse, I'll continue to watch his videos, because I don't like living in an eco-chamber, but it's important to see biasty wherever it occurs, and I'm pretty sure that he's a paid ALP propagandist

Can we just agree that we have different points of view and call it a day?

P.S. I can agree though, sometimes the ALP does make mistakes, but rarely do those mistakes equal to the level of Liberal/Nationals' mistakes or wrongdoings, such as:
- GLaDYs' and the NSW Liberals' selling spree of state assets like power grids, $45 billion motorways, hosptials etc to private companies.
- The Nationals' water theft, marginal seat rorts and starving much of rural NSW of economical opportunities - not to mention John Barilaro's Wild Horse Heritage Bill.
- Stacking the Fair Work Commission with Business Council lobbyists who ignored the status of workers.
- Locking Australia into $80bn defence contracts - the same amount pulled out of schools and hospitals by Abbott - to ensure that the ALP could not redirect those funds back into education and hospitals.
- Deliberately using outdated FTTN technology for the NBN to ensure Rupert Murdoch's commercial interests were safeguarded.

(these are just examples.)

What makes you think that I like the LNP. Hell, if you read the OP, I do nothing but criticise the LNP. I think that Gladys Berejiklian, the LNP premier that governs the state that I lice in, is incompetent AF, and I really like our ALP opposition leader, Jodi McKay. Doesn't change the fact that Friendly Jordies is a massive shill
