If the 2nd Amendment is so great, then why are democracies in Europe and East Asia that don't have it more stable and functional than ours?

Is being "stable and functional" your only criteria for a successful state? Because North Korea would, by that logic, be the best country in the world

Unless the losing party sees the potential for more harm. Following FDR's four wins, Republicans proposed the amendment that limited presidents to two terms. While it was intended to be a mockery of FDR's legacy, Democrats overwhelmingly supported the amendment because they were afraid of a Republican president serving for 12 or more years.

If they didn’t support it we could have gotten 12+ years of Reagan

President is a much less powerful office than SCOTUS. Control of SCOTUS can and will fundamentally and permanently change the country.

Luckily no party has close to the control necessary to ratify an amendment. If that ever happens we're finished.

Republicans almost did.

But why implement the solution when you're behind?

Lawmakers in Washington might see it that way. Voters will just be tired of the court's numbers reaching ridiculous levels and demand hard limits be set, and quite a few PACs on both sides would get tired of the endless judicial arms race and look for a limitation as well.

That's the point I was making, despite the fact that they were on top, it was their president who was beloved and won four terms and served 12 years, they saw the opportunity for harm if the other side got to do the same thing.

As is so often the case, the point is... not there? Literally all our presidents and would-be-presidents have been human beings, there's no good reason in engaging Tel's childish insinuation that the ones whom he dislikes are somehow not human.

Another reason why Americans on this thread who are pissed about this very real prospect should all sign up to be poll workers, barring those with crappy immune systems/a sensitivity to COVID.

If 51% of the country wanted to genocide the other 49% of the country, they would have have the power to do so

If 51% of the country wants to kill the other 49%, do you think it matters what the courts say?

Oh really? So what's the specific differentiation between Reagan being "actually a human being" in the context of other presidents? I fully expect that you won't resort to the childish tactic of dodging the question, that would be completely out of character.

Even better would be to act as security for the polling sites.

Several tweets down they said the MAGAs cleared out after more security arrived. If you had people with guns standing around protecting the polling stations this wouldn’t have happened in the first place

I'm not joking.

American right-wingers have one good point: the 2nd Amendment is there for a reason. Saving kids from being shot in their own preschools is a worthy cause, but it's about time that Democrats got as militant, organized and armed as Republicans are. Let Trump cultists try to violate other people's civil rights when those people have guns.

Probably not a good idea to bring guns to a polling site. That's just asking for problems.
