They workshoped a lot of terrible names before they settled on Gen X. We were latchkey kids for a while. It's one of those things that's more useful than its detractors would suggest and not as useful as is sometimes implied.

The baby boomers having such an easy event that defines their generation and being self absorbed exaggerated the generational thing. People have always 'kids these days' but even the Beat Generation was seen as a novelty and not The Blanket Term that Defines Everyone too young for WWII, too old for Korea. But since society began and ended with Boomers, now we have to parse all this shit.

Well I didn't. I don't really go in for group think or mob rule, labels and stuff. More to the point, re-litigating all this is futile. What matters is now and the future. What I perceive to have become true is basically this... now bear with me... you've seen these studied in the US about happiness and income level, right? They show the amount of income over $75,000 a person earns does not necessarily make them any more happy, but tends to decrease happiness. Well, paralleling that there's a certain amount of technology that makes human beings happy also. And similarly to income, an excessive of it does not increase happiness, but rather decreases it. I think we have reached that excess point. Now don't be calling me a Luddite bc that's old terminology. You need a new label for this.

It's a little glib and not at all what's being discussed by referring to it as 'group think' but that's neither here nor there. Congratulations on being the only free thinker on the internet, I guess.

Kind of think that term was specifically designed for people who have an arbitrary cut off for technology that sits somewhere between the plow and transhumanism, but you do you.
