BLAME CORONAVIRUS! No spectators in Italian sport for four weeks... Coppa Italia semi between Napoli and Inter also postponed... Inter prez Zhang pretty chuffed... Italy third-worst-affected country after ROK, PRC...
! England's men asked to refrain from handshakes on Sri Lanka tour... SL has had one coronavirus case who has recovered but "Root's side suffered gastroenteritis and flu problems" in SAfrica... while at Women's World T20 in Oz, Tropical Storm Esther poses more of a threat...
? Premier League told to "step up" nCoV planning... HMG will not cancel anything unless the science says otherwise...

People are scared. Very scared. At times irrationally so. There’s a lot of overhype and misinformation doing the rounds. During an emergency, such things certainly do not help.

We've had a few dubious stories over the past two months (the earlier-discussed Papal testing reports, dodgy claims from Chinese provincial CDCs about supposed nCoV "cures") but it is not my intention to propagate those or cause other concern. Obviously agreed, plus apologies if I have done anything other than inform people... which I may well have done with the coloured indicators. Perhaps I should stick to the (list) tag next time
Verbatim quotes from today's COVID-19 mission briefing by WHO Director-General Tedros:
"Our view continues to be that containment of COVID-19 must be the top priority for all countries, but at the same time, countries should be preparing for sustained community transmission. That’s why we’re suggesting a comprehensive approach. With early, aggressive measures, countries can stop transmission and save lives...

Yesterday I spoke to President Sebastián Piñera of Chile about the work his government is doing to keep its people safe, even though at that time his country did not have a single case. Chile now has its first case, but I am confident that with the President’s leadership, they are well-placed to contain the outbreak. That is the kind of political commitment we need in every country, mobilizing the whole of government before cases even arrive, and continuing to be aggressive when cases arrive...

This virus is not SARS, it is not MERS and it is not influenza. The nature of this virus means we have an opportunity to break the chains of transmission and contain its spread. At the very least, we can slow it down and buy time."

No no. I’m not accusing you of spreading misinformation. I’m merely adding that on top of the emergency and worry, there have been a lot of dubious stories that add to the panic. I was seriously asked, for example, if you can get CoVID19 from eating at a Chinese buffet. Mind you, at a local eatery in a place that has no reported cases of CoVID19. I’ve seen people go into panic about their kids’ Asian classmates. I’ve seen people refusing to interact with their Asian neighbors. I’ve read of people actually believing Corona beer is a vector of infection. No joke. And these are the stories that feed into the fear over this virus.

My Mother's concerned about eating at buffets period, not Chinese ones. And when it spreads here I can see the concern, people cough and sneeze and all that fun stuff.

Donald got angry with pharmaceutical executives the other day as they patiently tried to explain to him why a vaccine can't be released before the elections and why 'a really good flu vaccine' wouldn't work as an alternative.

Oh don't worry, The Netherlands will have around 900 students returning tomorrow who have all been in the north of Italy from just before the outbreak there started and now. The Dutch government says they are "prepared" for their return. Just as "prepared" they were when the outbreak started here with now numbers of over 40 and not a single containment in sight with doctors blowing the whistle on "not having any resources nor supplies"

Could be worse, you could be living under this..

Chinese social media censors blocked neutral information about the coronavirus outbreak when they targeted references to the outbreak on WeChat and other platforms, a report has found.

Hundreds of keywords and keyword combinations, including “Wuhan seafood market” and “Sars variation” were censored in late December, as doctors sought to warn about the new virus.

The report, by the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk school of global affairs and public policy, found that between January and February, “a wide breadth of content” was censored on WeChat and YY, a Chinese live-streaming platform, including criticisms of the Chinese government.

Speculative and factual information, and neutral references to the government’s handling of the outbreak, were also blocked.

Chinese social media platforms have come under greater pressure to censor content about the Covid-19 illness, which has killed 3,285 and infected more than 95,000. Critical discussion and investigative reports about the virus have been removed from social media sites and Chinese leaders have called for more control over online media to ensure social stability during the outbreak.

“Our findings show that information on Covid-19 is being tightly controlled on Chinese social media,” the report said.

“Censorship of Covid-19 content started at early stages of the outbreak and continued to expand blocking a wide range of speech, from criticism of the government to officially sanctioned facts and information.”

It said censorship of the outbreak was “troubling”.
