Lula is just an idiotic and corrupt socialist who shouldn't even have gotten out of prison. He has no project for Brazil except to take revenge on all those who supported his imprisonment (including the Brazilian people) and to benefit those who supported him.

I really think it wasn't something to impeach him.

The problem is not that he criticizes Israel, but that he and his far-left allies are extremely anti-Semitic.
And yes, his speech is a crime for impeachment in Brazil.

Do those who supported him not count among the Brazilian people? And the imprisonment was a complete joke, the world's seen it was cooked up by his opponents, that game's done, time to move on.

And his policies just seem like regular social democratic poverty reduction and not burning down the Amazon.

I don't know if you followed it, but there was due process before he was convicted, and there is very clear evidence of Lula's crimes. He was never declared innocent, what happened was a big legal maneuver to get them into the elections and defeat Bolsonaro.

His conviction was annulled and the judge deemed biased, come on. The people of Brazil obviously preferred Lula too.

Two right-wing ex-presidents from Central America are having serious legal issues, which isn’t a very surprising coincidence, but it’s still somewhat amusing.

Frontrunner Ricardo Martinelli has officially been disqualified from the upcoming Panamanian elections after fleeing to Nicaragua to avoid prison time for money laundering charges, making him the third Central American ex-president to do so, after Mauricio Funes and Salvador Sánchez Cerén. Ortega aiding Martinelli against the PRD carries a bit of historical irony, but doing anything for the bribes/to own the libs is about par for course.

Juan Orlando Hernández, a former Honduran president and heroic “tough on crime” crusader in the War on Drugs is being tried in New York for accepting millions in bribes from drug traffickers to turn Honduras into a safe haven for the cocaine trade. It’s always the ones you least suspect. /s

Protestors break down the front doors of the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City

They're demanding more transparency from the federal government about its true role in the murder of the Iguala 43 in 2014. This is, incidentally, the second time in as many years that people have ripped the doors off.

For better or worse, it looks like Haiti is approaching an endgame. Putting pressure on Toussaint Louverture and the Autorité Portuaire Nationale is already preventing aid; capturing APN would make it far easier to smuggle arms and supplies for the gangsters among the >4000 prisoners released by Viv Ansanm, Jimmy Chérizier’s supposedly renewed pact with rival gangs. Ariel Henry has failed to marshal international support and, whether they admit it or not, the US and CARICOM are all but demanding his resignation.

Among those already vulturing Ariel Henry is ex-police, politician, and paramilitary leader Guy Philippe. He has proposed a three-person transitional council alongside Court of Appeals judge Durin Duret Jr. and a nun. Philippe participated in the 2004 coup and 2001 coup attempt against Aristide and has a lot of connections from his career—including the BSAP (linked in above post) and, speculatively, Jimmy Chérizier.

Two-time presidential candidate and former senator Jean-Charles Moïse has expressed approval for the plan, but prefers Duret to Philippe as the head of the governing board, so the latter is probably representing him in the coalition. Jean-Charles Moïse is an associate of Maduro and Cabello, but I don’t know if he’s involved in Venezuela’s criminal enterprises or just ideologically aligned.

Chérizier says his forces will stand down if Ariel Henry’s government resigns, and the politicians in question have maintained a conciliatory tone when talking about the gangs. Philippe has a base of supporters and can likely count on the support of figures from Jovenel Moïse’s administration (especially given the recent indictments against them in the assassination case), so it wouldn’t be hard to legitimize his leadership domestically if he somehow ousts Henry.

Basically, it comes down to convincing government forces and international allies that it’s not worth fighting against the only outcome that is likely to succeed. But even if the unholy alliance able to cooperate for long enough to install a new leader in the National Palace, Haiti will be back to the exact same place as it was before Moïse’s assassination. The factions that can de-escalate the crisis will stop cooperating as soon as they have no common enemy to unite against.

Tl;dr it’s probably time to admit defeat. The gangs will get what they want whether this ends now or is prolonged for a few years. There just isn’t a viable alternative to the status quo at the moment. The cycle of violence will continue.

Haitian PM says he'll resign once new government council forms

Edit: Haiti's political leaders reject Caricom brokered deal
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CMC) —Several political leaders in Haiti have rejected a proposal submitted by the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to end the current unstable situation in the French-speaking country and have instead reiterated their position of imposing their own three-member presidential council to govern the troubled country until general elections.

Leader of the ‘Pitit Desalin’ (Dessalines’ Children) party, Jean-Charles Moise, said his party and allies have completely rejected the proposed seven-member Council outlined by Caricom following discussions with various stakeholders in Jamaica on Monday.

“The Caricom-sponsored proposal has absolutely no importance in our eyes and for the Haitian people,” Moise told a news conference on Wednesday.

“We have rejected the proposal,” he added.

Moise added that the three-member Council will soon be installed “by any means necessary”.

“You see, once we finish talking now, we are going to throw Caricom’s proposal into the garbage can,” Moise said.

He added that during a meeting with Caricom representatives last week, he told them that the “decision to appoint the three-member council was the result of a national agreement, which we won’t negotiate”.

“Haitian people Haiti is ours, we cannot allow other people to come to dictate to us what we have to do,” said Moise, adding that he had also informed Caricom of the plan to appoint a three-member Council endorsed by 150 political parties, and 3,250 organisations.

Moise has partnered with Guy Philippe, a former rebel leader, who led a successful 2004 coup and was recently released from a United States prison after pleading guilty to money laundering, to establish a new political leadership in the country, where they have promised to grant amnesty to criminal gang leaders and members, involved in criminal activities.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry Tuesday formally announced his intention to resign as Caricom leaders said they had brokered a deal for Haiti paving the way for a “peaceful transition of power” in the country.

“The government that I’m running cannot remain insensitive in front of this situation. There is no sacrifice that is too big for our country,” Henry said in a videotaped statement.

Henry has been in Puerto Rico since last week, unable to enter his country after having travelled from Kenya where he signed an agreement allowing for a United Nations Security Council-sanctioned international force led by the African country to restore peace and security in his troubled country.

His statement came after Caricom had played a key role in organising the meeting in Kingston, Jamaica that was attended by top officials from the United States, France, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Benin, Kenya as well as the United Nations.

Speaking at the end of that meeting, Guyana’s President and Caricom chairman, Dr Irfaan Ali, told reporters that an agreement had been reached that would allow for Prime Minister Henry to step down and for a transitional governance arrangement “which paves the way for a peaceful transition of power, continuity of governance and action plan for near term security and the road to free and fair elections”.

Jean-Charles Moise is unrelated to Jovenel Moise

Egg shortage in Cuba, like everything else in Cuba: Eggs are in high demand by Cubans who, faced with the food crisis and the inability to pay the high prices of meat, turn to this product, which has reached prices that border on the prohibitive in the face of the debacle of the poultry industry.

Cuba Gov. Manages to Buy a Half Million Eggs from Colombia.

HAVANA TIMES – After starting negotiations last July and after approving the health certifications in December, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) will send the first batch of eggs to Cuba. Two 40-foot containers with 17,280 boxes of 30 units – 518,400 eggs in total – will soon leave for the Island, the Institute assured, although without revealing the exact date.

Juan Fernando Roa Ortiz, general manager of the ICA, described the agreement between Bogotá and Havana as “an important milestone” and assured that “this first export of eggs to Cuba is testimony to the commitment of our producers to health, safety and quality, allowing our products to reach more international markets.”

In Colombia, an egg has a price of 581 Colombian pesos, which is equivalent to14¢ US or 37 Cuban pesos. Although the value is only a third of the almost 100 pesos that a unit can cost on the Island – between 2,700 and 2,800 for a carton of 30 units – it is likely that the import cost will end up increasing its price in the Cuban market.

Eggs are in high demand by Cubans who, faced with the food crisis and the inability to pay the high prices of meat, turn to this product, which has reached prices that border on the prohibitive in the face of the debacle of the poultry industry. The shipments of ’food combos’ paid for by relatives abroad have been another of the alternatives that families have resorted to in search of eggs, one of the great absentees from the Cuban table.

This is The Real Cuba.

A Few Excerpts:

To the shortages of Eggs in Cuba, add Shortages of Bread and everything else in Cuba. Cubans and Tourists Without Bread Until the End of March. despite a donation of Russian wheat. HAVANA TIMES – Once again, there is little bread in Cuba due to a lack of flour. The “complex situation,” as the official press defines it, will last until the end of March, according to Emerio Gonzalez Lorenzo, president of the Food Industry Business Group.

Although state media say that the “impact” on the rationed bread rolls began to “show” this Saturday, it is something that consumers have been experiencing daily for months, even in establishments aimed at tourism.

Similarly, the report on national television said that the last shipments of raw materials arrived at the end of January “and ensured the activity of mills and bakeries for most of February.” At no time does it mention that 25,000 tons of wheat donated by the Russian government arrived in mid-January.

That amount exceeds the 20,000 tons that, authorities assured this Saturday, are necessary to cover the rationed daily bread rolls for a month. If this is the case, the shipment of Russian wheat should have been enough to supply the stores for the remainder of this month and the next.

The substitute products added to bread – such as cassava, squash pumpkin, or rice – are not a solution either, as they only make up 15% of the total needed to make the bread rolls, according to official notes.
