Brazil removes months of coronavirus data from government website.

Presumably to try and hide what a terrible job Bolsonaro is doing. Right wing populists seem to be the worst at dealing with the pandemic.

No wonder there's no future. Why would people with no future care whether there's one for other people?

I do not think this is a good idea. The solution to excessively powerful monopolies is not the make them bigger monopolies. Trust busting over state directed trust creation.

We see this in Russia where the state has created massive government owned monopolies, which have low productivity, low efficiency, low innovation and stifle small businesses. They do give the government more power, as such assets can be used to advance foreign policy objectives but it comes at a cost.

Unfortunately monopolistic state capitalism is usually no less problematic or exploitative than private monopolies.

Maduro is mistaken if he believes de facto single-party rule can be maintained indefinitely. If Meganálisis is to be believed, Venezuela's elections and government, as well as the PSUV, have begun to lose any pretense at legitimacy or transparency among the general public. Historically, that hasn't always by itself led to revolutions but violence and material deprivations do increase the likelihood that a revolution could occur, especially if someone decides to bank roll it.

Maybe so, but there have been other tales of this kind in Latin America as you know, and not all successes like Cuba. Grenada's PRG was collapsing in on itself when the US arrives. Velasco's left-wing junta in Peru was unseated when the economy slumped and he threatened war with Chile.

The material conditions in Venezuela have deteriorated pretty severely since then and the veneer of democracy has more or less faded. I'm not stating that the United States should intervene. I'm more so stating that the conditions at the moment are such that we could expect violence, attempted coups, and attempted revolutions to occur. Alternatively, we could simply have a progressively more naked dictatorship emerge - as happened in Mexico and else-where.

In the case of my native Cuba, I think this statement from the revolutionary government as they call it says it all: We are the continuity of the revolution. Similar to Maduro's statement.

Some say that the Brazilian leader has his own personnel agenda which has nothing to do with looking out for the greater welfare of his citizens. Having said that, some here have mentioned Venezuela. Venezuela is out of control. They cannot even control pirates that have been harassing there coast and the southern waters off the island nation of Trinidad.

Being part of the Labour Renewal Party, for a start. Now Añez has the virus too: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/09/world/americas/bolivia-president-jeanine-anez-coronavirus.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&fbclid=IwAR1_AgZauAPFSPf5B5-Ypbdw9ABmpH9kd_YlrJw-1o0ToUzVUqi-mN8bpFk

Since she has no VP being acting president, the pendulum would swing back to the left should the worst happen as the Senate President, Monica Copa, belongs to MAS.
