The depth changes are very, very drastic, so one moment you are in water knees-deep and the next moment, you will be finding yourself trying to swim and float in the water. It's very, very scary!

It doesn't mention it in the article, but he received checks from the VA for the 10 years after his death because he was never reported dead - the wife reportedly got a payout of $177,000.
