"Tried as an adult" is one of those things where we had to make up a new name for something that already existed, because we invented something new and they need differentiation. Like acoustic guitars used to just be guitars, then we invented electric guitars. "Tried as an adult" is just "tried". Special trial procedures for juveniles are something we invented more recently. Prior to that one was either of the age of criminal responsibility, and therefore put on trial, or not, and therefore not. And the age of criminal responsibility is not 18. More like 8, though obviously it varies.
