As someone who was truly frightened the first time I saw people speaking in the gibberish, I totally relate.

Honestly, you're speaking in an unknown language without any idea where it's coming from in a susceptible state of consciousness. It might be gibberish from your subconscious or it might be demonic, there's no middle ground. I will say most of the speaking in tongues sounds like nonsense or demonic babbling meant to impress Christians.

Demons aren't real and neither is God, so it's gibberish. Which is made evident in the fact that no two cases of "speaking in tongues" ever sound similar, if it was an angelic language or a demonic one you'd expect some consistency.

Most Catholics don't but when I was a kid (forced to go on a church retreat against my will) I met Catholic extremists who claimed they have spoken in tongues. It's mainly a Pentecostal thing but a few Catholic sects are into it. (Whether or not the Vatican deems it heretical I don't know but the Vatican does believe in other crazy things like exorcism.)

For the most part, Catholics are more chill than many Protestant denominations like Baptists and Pentecostals, but some Catholics really do take it further.

I don't think the Vatican has any statement on speaking in tongues. Personally I think its faked. I think whoever does it is trying to either get new converts to their denomination by impressing the non-believers into thinking they can speak Angelic languages, or its by people who just want attention in their congregations. And I'm a devout Catholic. Strangely enough, my dad is the complete opposite. He believes that it might be real and that I shouldn't make any prejudices towards it, but yea. I actually knew an Apostolic kid who'd start speaking in tongues in class while he prayed. Shook around in his chair and everything. Which makes me further my point that I think it's faked...

As for exorcisms and possessions, I think that's real. Just not as common as society and the media plays it out to be. I mean the fact that the Church only has a small handful of exorcists in America proves that.

Actually, yeah.

Interesting article about the relationship between Christian churches and right-wing politics: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/th ... -religion/

There have always been obnoxious right-wing Christians, but it used to be most people were Christian across the board, regardless of political views, and the church was less politicized.

If you look back further, you can find examples of both Christian bigotry and Christian progressives. John Brown thought his abolitionist crusade was divinely ordained.

Let's face it, right-wing worldviews and Christianity are generally caused by the same thing; an inadequate sense of skepticism. Especially in the age of Trump, wherein Trump's dozens of contradictions and the Bible's hundreds are only a difference of degree.

It's a miracle the left isn't consistently 100% composed of anti-theists. The ones who aren't are betraying the left by legitimizing Christianity's continued existence, which is far more useful to the right than the left.

It's possibly a system thing. I've recently got a different computer and the same adblock lets sites pass that it blocked on the old one and vice versa.
