A couple updates in the run up to the presidential debates and, eventually, the general election:

1. Macri came out as anti-abortion
2. His running mate, Pichetto, answered a question about rampant unemployment by blaming Venezuelan immigrants and, for some reason, finished his answer off by saying we should bomb one of our villas (Argentine shanty towns) to fight organized crime.
3. His minister of security, Bullrich, has encouraged law enforcement detaining people in public transportation to demand their IDs. On top of being a very police state sort of thing, it's also something that our last military dictatorship did, so lots of people are understandably pissed.

Last ditch efforts to grap more voters in the first round.

Picture me surprised:

I am wondering if thats going to help him or not. I could think Macri might be going to turn this into an issue now to help him out of the corner he's currently in.

Would you also say that the total implosion of the economy and the peso did harm the very fabric of argentine society and social trust in general?

I'm not sure he would, Macri was the one who pushed Congress into voting on last year's abortion bill and seemed like he'd sign it if it had passed.

Sudden change.

Not really sudden, just a way to grab votes. He;s already lost one VP over the issue, he's not going to lose more of his UCR-PRO coalition if he can help it.

With only ten days left before the vote, here's some of the news.

Fernandez is now saying that he may shrink the AFI and SIDE, Argentina's intelligence agency and the department in charge of it: https://www.clarin.com/politica/alberto-fernandez-estudia-achicar-ex-side-blanquear-fondos-reservados_0_TwsaU1KX.html

Macri is criticising the CPM(an organisation dedicated to human rights and justice for victims of the junta and Dirty War) for what he calls their attemts to "persecute journalism": https://www.clarin.com/politica/mauricio-macri-cuestiono-informe-comision-memoria-repudio-intentos-perseguir-periodismo-_0_PT-da3d3.html

The millon's question on itself. Either way, got updates from here. The goverment has been busy on making campaign all over the nation and in Buenos Aires, cities mayor's from the Frente Juntos Por El Cambio had switched their national approaches to the more local ones on their cities. In other words in case they lose and seeing it will happen, in the higher spheres from the goverment are seeing to get ready to be the opposition and try to find a leader on the era Post-Macri. Dunno if someone brought it or not, if so, sorry to repeat it.

We also had the first presidential debate. In my personal opinion, Fernández came out of it looking like the strongest contender. Macri had little charisma and relied on old, tired talking points, while Fernández was on the offensive from the get go.

Lavagna was fine but a bit too low energy for his own good.

Espert was doing fine for a right-wing libertarian until he took a huge gulp of the dumb binch juice and started to talk shit about "gender ideology" and human rights being a "scam".

Del Caño had a couple of strong-ish moments that will only look convincing to those who already support him (called for a moment of silence for the victims of the repression in Ecuador and called Macri a bootlicker).

Gómez Centurión was (thankfully) boring, unengaging and kinda bumbling. His whole shtick is being a Christian fundamentalist who opposes abortion rights and even on that he stumbled.

Oh, and Macri's foot-in-mouth syndrom is back with a vengeance. He tried to make a negative analogy about the economy under a Fernández government by comparing it to giving your wife your credit card and her going on such a devastating shopping spree ('cause women be shopping) that you had to get your house mortgaged. The women's movement is more active than ever nowadays, and we just had our national women's meeting (a huge event for political and academic discussions about women's issues), so the timing didn't help.

Yeah..that last one isn't going to fly nowadays with you guys. I'd say Fernandez won that based on what you've said too.

Well we still have the next debate and unless some crazy miracle happens. It will be the same than last sunday. Still of all Fernandez is the one winning and will with how all is going.

Well, not all conservatives can be like those in the US, I suppose. I'd imagine this is a fairly common view among a lot of people though.

Macri sucks major choad, but a return to Kirchnerism isn't exactly a victory either. If I were Argentinian, I'd be pretty pessimistic at the moment.

Polling so far consistently points to Alberto Fernández getting a 20 points lead, thereby winning in the first round. If the same polling is to be believed, the right-wing libertarians and right-wing authoritarians will remain behind the Worker's Left Front, which has got to hurt.

Well, Macri damaged the right's standing, so it's back to good old-fashioned Peronism with insane levels of corruption from Fernandez's puppet master.

If exit polls are to be believed (they usually aren't), Fernández is winning by a wide enough margin that there won't be a runoff. The province of Buenos Aires is reverting back to Peronist control with a landslide victory for Kiciloff over incumbent governor Vidal, while it seems like Larreta (from Macri's party) will be reelected as mayor of the city of Buenos Aires.

With 59.4% of the vote in:

Alberto Fernandez/Cristina Kirchner: 47.24%
Mauricio Macri/Miguel Pichetto: 41.37%
Roberto Lavagna/Juan Manuel Urtubey: 6.13%

Should this trend continue, Fernandez will win in the First Round.

EDIT: With 65% in, the elections' been called for Fernandez and Kirchner in Round 1. Peronism is back in full force just as the Peso reaches another low today of $65 against the dollar.

Yes, but you also have compulsory voting between 18-70, so that brings the numbers up a bit.

Aaaaaaand that's pretty much it. Neoliberalism is dead but not necessarily out of it, and Peronism got its groove back. The one thing making me sad is that Myriam Bregman, probably the best person in the Worker's Left Front, probably won't make it to Congress.
