See: Tide Pods, planking, and so on.
12,000 people is kind of a lot of people for it to be dismissed entirely.
Planking seems to have claimed very few. Sad that it cost anyone their lives, but I think it's a handful in comparison.

My male friends also manage to spread without taking up more room then the width of their seat. I wonder if obesity, in the US at least, is causing some of this issue.

My main problem is that I see it as a non-issue, or, at least, an issue not worthy of legislation or societal action, so any action taken against it I see as a waste of time, effort and money.

It makes you look a little... uninformed.
Because posting a staged photo in the first place totally does not.
Also again with the totally okay because I do it hostility. Love it. Oh yes yes, no need to post some nonsense about reporting it as you do, it is not necessary.

I do that occasionally when the train is not full. One time I did it when I had two very large bags that would have ended up blocking the isle. Better to use a seat rather then prevent people from moving through the car.

Which of course is not an issue at all if the bus is not crowded. But you do bring up a sort of tricky situation; is it better to take up the isle or take up seats when the conditions are crowded?

And somehow, the point has whizzed over your head again.
To say something is 'not widespread', and then to say it is being reported on three different continents, kind of is, I don't know, a bit of conflicting information?
If I said "it only happens in the US!" maybe it's not an issue for people outside.
It apparently is an issue for people in Spain, the UK, and Russia as well.

By saying "Continents," you're making it seem as if it's a bigger deal than it really is.
