Truthfully speaking though, he still killed 35 people. That isn’t an excuse.

He can’t escape now... I hope.

This isn't GTA V. Bullets have a very low chance of igniting gasoline. I'm assuming armed security would have enough training to shoot him without hitting his arsenal. Also, not American.

EDIT: Science. The temperature of a 9mm bullet leaving the barrel of a pistol is approximately 512° F. The bullet cools as it travels to its target. The base autoignition temperature of gasoline is 536° F, in the most optimal conditions. So no, a bullet fired by a security guard would not ignite gasoline.

Yes, because it's common even in America for animation studios to have security guards or employees openly carrying firearms. Obviously.

Not necessarily. I’m pretty sure the western way is not the best solution to something that happened in Asia. Also considering how the working lifestyle there has an impact on such subject.

Japan, which has gun laws so draconian I am surprised that NRA members don't spontaneously combust when they come over here, had, IIRC, 4 firearm related deaths last year. 126 million people, only 4 shot to death.

America had how many?

I believe Japan's stopped other tragedies already and the Japanese public seems to be in agreement with this too.

Minus the talking point, one thing worth noting is that the building DID have a security system in place that possibly would have prevented the arsonist from accessing the building. But, it had been turned off for the day due to a high volume of expected VIPs coming in for a tour.

Assuming he does get the death penalty, he will have to endure quite a bit. Japan does conduct capital punishment, but it's system is notorious for the mental suffering inflicted on those condemned to die.

Or better yet, that he dies in jail of old age while being strung along that he is going to be executed any day now. This man killed 35 artists. He should die a hundred deaths.

If laws are wrong and unjust than it is the laws which need changing.

That is exactly what will happen, excepting that he will be hanged if he gets the death penalty. Japan does not inform the condemned of when it will happen until the day of. So every morning, when the guards make their rounds, each prisoner must wonder if today is it. Will they stop by my cell today and tell me I must come with them to die.

Cruel, but just. Perhaps he should be taunted with extra fear and unneeded laughter from his cell mates. With this in mind, the families could finally get peace.

I'm a bit late to the thread, but I heard about this whilst I was on holiday. Really distressing news. I watched A Silent Voice earlier this year after a difficult event in my personal life, and it genuinely touched me in a way media almost never does. It's difficult, then, to hear that the people who created something I drew comfort from at a difficult time should be subjected to so utterly horrible an experience themselves; it's hard to get to grips with the cosmic injustice of that. I will keep all the victims in my prayers.

I don't believe in the death penalty as a matter of principle, but in any jurisdiction where it continues to exist this would be the sort of crime that definitely merits it.
