Exactly. I have no problem with there being mage representation in government office, but it can't all doled out to anyone who can cast a levitation spell or whose parents get them into the wizarding equivalent of Eton. There's no telling what forces could be unleashed on the public.

However, more mages on democractic ballots would be fine.

The wizards council depends on the support of the people and would try to convince wizards to act with restraint, and to protect the citizenry. Right now, people have to rely on their own wits against black magic. A wizards council is a better alternative to returning to the inquisition.
