This.

However, the trains in Germany have seat reservation. On a 6-7 hour trip to Netherlands, this is well worth it. I'll pay the few bucks and smile smugly at the people standing. Before I just turn on Netflix on my mobile and zone out that is.

What's the difference in price and time if you were to fly?

I would like to try it once just for experience. Then probably not unless I feel like I want to be spoiled or pampered. :P

I mean, it's just for a few hours, so if I am to buy a first class ticket for some travel every time, it will be a waste of money. For once in a lifetime or twice, why not.

Economy, because I usually sit next to the emergency exit door. I know it's on the first class as well, but in case of a crash it is very likely that the first class will die first.
So I sit as far as I can from the first class.
So far 0 planes I've been to have crashed or mysteriously disappeared. Kinda scary to think that there are planes that have just disappeared without any trace.

Depends on luggage. I almost always travel with luggage to and from (germans beers to NL, dutch beers to germany), so then in price difference the train is cheaper. Without luggage the airline just might win. Because with train, I just need to book a train, with flight I still need to get a train (and even a bus in Eindhoven airport case) from Amsterdam/Eindhoven to Utrecht/parents' place.

In time, airline wins. 2 hours probably door to door. But the comfort because of the switching, etc. is much less. Also, with the train I do not lose my luggage. Flights are trickier with that.

If you are going more than 12 hours on train it is usually cheaper to fly here.

It probably is here too. I guess I am lucky in the fact that with train I only need to do 1 switch from Berlin to my destination in Netherlands. And that it's only 6-7 hours :)

No. I really don't see the point of paying more to get an extra 4 cm of leg room.

I always get a seat (as opposed to having to stand in second class sometimes),

That's what reservations are for. You can get a reserved seat for second-class coaches, too.
And of course, seats on airplanes are reserved individually, so...

It really depend on the situation, when you had really tight schedule or didn't have the luxury of time caused by specific functions or nature of your job, may be first class will help you a lot since you didn't need to arrive earlier and could use the time to finish some tasks or meeting. Otherwise first class flight is not necessary.

for the train, it depend on what nation you been. Some developing nations didn't have the best train service even an unbearable travel experience also the price of first class train is also not that high in those nations, therefore it is better to spend more for first class ticket. In more developed nations that's okay to ride regular.

Oh, btw, third class when you're with a group of people on a train in the middle of Russia is fantastic. Spent 33 hours between sleeping, drinking and laughing.

Would do it again.

If its $100 for a 14 hour flight, it is well worth the upgrade. 90 minute flight, maybe not.

I just realized I selected the wrong option on the poll. It should be Others/Varies, but I selected the really long one at the bottom.

No, I'm talking about flights like HEL-WAV (From Finland to Poland and other near countries) that are barely 90 minutes
I can't imagine what the price would be like on 14h flights.

Say what you like about anarchists, they make the trains run on time. Into heavily graffitied blockades. Which then explode.

IDK, I'm too poor to use them and the only time I've ever been on a plane I was too poor to get into classes like that.
