While the Vasa was indeed built by order of the Swedish king. And it was indeed, dutch shipwrights who built it, they were from Holland. The main province of the Dutch republic. I'm not from there. Heck, I just looked it up, the town where I grew up was, when the ship was built, in Spanish hands. I claim innocence.

All warriors in the Middle Ages were seemingly savage tyrants. Not until the chivalry movement in the 14th Century was there a successful attempt to promote a gentler image of the Medieval warrior. Vikings were pretty similar to Frankish nights or Anglo-Saxon thegns.

They also have a pretty good (or at least decent) justice system, something akin to a search warrant. It's pretty neat!

They were raiders, yes, but also tradesmen, explorers, settlers and they served in foreign armies (most notably, perhaps, as the Varangians in the Byzantine Empire). Their extensive trade networks extended as far as Persia and the Caspian Sea. They contributed greatly to the foundation of the Rus state, and thus, the history of Russia and Eastern Europe, not to mention their influence of Western Europe through the legacy of the Normans, a people descended from them. An interesting aspect of Viking society is also that of women's rights, which were, to some extent, ahead of their time.
