We haven't, and the WHO has listed the things mentioned here as signification threats. What's crazy is that we haven't so much defeated cancer or superbugs, but rather anti-vaxxers have risen to the point of being dangerous enough to rival cancer itself.

That's really fucked up. And to the people who quoted my post. I can't say I disagree. A heavy handed solution might be the best, and I'm not gonna lose much sleep in this specific case.

You know... now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen an anti-vaxxer here. We've had Scientologists, religious extremists of most every flavor, anti-theist extremists, flat-earthers, young-Earth creationists, and even one memorable instance of a geocentrist... but not once an anti-vaxxer.

I mean, given what I've seen of the anti-vax ... ur... "style" of debate elsewhere online, I suspect if we ever get one here that they probably would last about as long as any of the above have, but that is really weird we haven't had one to date.

People have a warped perspective of how curative medicine and preventative measures affect the spread of disease, and unreasonable expectations about the effectiveness of treatment. They assume that we stopped the spread of diseases by curing them. We haven't. We never cured Polio. There might even be a couple of people still stuck in iron lungs from the last epidemics in the US. We got rid of Polio because we developed a vaccine. Even among diseases we cured, like Typhoid, it's spread was blunted by the vaccine rather than the antibiotics. We've also technically cured Meningitis, but it's so virulent that if you don't start treatment almost immediately you'll probably die or be severely debilitated. Vaccinating against viral infections is extremely important because developing treatments to combat viruses is significantly harder than developing vaccines, meaning that a significant proportion of them have no cure. It's also incredibly important that vaccines are used against lethal bacterial infections so that we don't have to use antibiotics against them, which always carry the risk of allowing resistant strains to develop, which then can then easily kill immunocompromised people who can't be vaccinated. It's long past time that vaccinations were made mandatory, because refusing them without a good medical reason is straight up negligent.

Well.....not only do vaccines NOT cause autism, but I think the reason people think that is either because their trying to figure out excuses from spending a lot of money on them, rather than admit their financially struggling, or because perhaps, theoretically, plausibly, a pattern or trend of kids getting autism after they get a vaccine could be frightening for heavens sake. These people aren't a threat, their scared. They want what's best for their child, and they just need some more information.
