What are your thoughts on R Kelly?

Postby Jonjones229 » Mon Jan 14, 2019 10:08 pm

There was a documentary released a week ago called surviving R Kelly. It exposed his dark and terrible past abuse with young women. The world is turning against him including his own daughter.

Will you still listen to his music? Do you forgive him for his atrocious acts?
Edit: my opinion on R Kelly
Extremely talented musician. He sold millions of albums, had an amazing musical career and no one can take that away from him. I really like his voice and some of his older songs such as Ignition remix.
However, as a human being, he sucks, and has done some terrible things (kidnap, underage women sex etc) and watching the recent documentary really made me lose respect for him.

I will probably never listen to his music again. Very disappointed in him.

I don't listen to his music because I don't like it. It's not my taste. However I don't see a reason others who do like that sort of music shouldn't listen to it, it's the music that matters not the singer and what he may have done.

Also, what's your opinion, OP? Threads get closed down if you don't put that in.

I like his music, but his personality it that of a scumbag, and how he tries to hide everything about his personal life makes me question him as a person, especially with all those sex abuse allegations that have come out against him.

Musically, he’s great.
As a human? Utterly despicable, and we should remember that fact.

The clear answer is, if you like the music, listen to it guilt-free on youtube or something so he gets no royalties from it.

I think one should be able to distinguish the art (The music) from the artist and separate them. If you like his music, that's fine, I don't care and honestly I think his songs are great, but just like with artists like 6ix9ine and Kodak Black, they deserve to face the punishment for their actions.

EDIT: And unlike R. Kelly they make terrible music imo.

That’s a good moral
Honestly though like, R Kelly was super important to me growing up and when the scandal dropped I felt betrayed. Like I take this case way too personally

I usually support debaurchery but I don't approve anything non-consensual.

I read an article on a monk who had meth-fueled gay sex in his temple, him I approve of.
And the other Buddhist monks who go to all you can eat buffets.

I consider them elightened, which isn't to say they couldn't do more, like I don't know if they do charity.
They should support debauchery publicly.

I'm not a music person, never have been. This isn't new news however, for those who know of his baggage. He'll either maintain silence and manage to stay out of trouble because of dumb luck or his sheer good fortune, or will slip up one of these days.

"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I don't think that is how you monk, though...

I certainly got nothin' against consensual, harmless, legal debauchery (I'd probably partake for all I care), but a monk's entire spiel is to kinda, y'know, NOT indulge in 'em?

I hate to do the cliched "Who is he again?" routine, but I actually never heard of his music before.

From what I have read so far, whatever he did was simply awful, so... I don't think I'll listen any time soon.

His music isn't all that bad tbh, if I were to recommend one song of his, it'd probably be I Believe I Can Fly or even I Am Your Angel with Celine Dion. But yeah personally he is awful, but I at least want to separate the art from the artist.

Oh wait, I heard that one before. That was by him?

... Now I don't know how to feel about that. I admit, that song is good or even great, but yep, I think I'll do that, i.e. enjoy the songs.

I wonder if people want to separate the art from the artist because they have strong feelings about Death Of The Author as a critical theory, or because they want to continue to enjoy art even though they know that there is something ~ p r o b l e m a t i c ~ about the artist.
