Maybe, but in my opinion - probably not. The Republican and Democratic Parties are total opposites, as they should be.
The Republican Party is the low-tax/pro-military/anti-abortion/pro-states rights/whatever while the Democratic Party is.. well, you get what I mean. One party supports Obamacare, the other vehemently opposes it, ya know?

Whats your point? unless federalized the national guard answers to the Governor. And if Trump ordered a nuclear bomb dropped on Chicago or San Francisco I am almost certain that order would be defied by the military.

I guess that depends how committed you are to representative democracy. If undesirables can have the representation suppressed because we don’t like them, well, I guess that can be your position, but you lose the right to complain when one of these “no representation without income taxation” people comes along, trying to deny the vote to the poor that don’t pay income taxes.

If we look at how the rest of the world does it, the large parties would sooner set up minority leadership than allow them in a coalition more likely than not.

As opposed to currently, where actual white supremacists first join the Republican party and radfems the Democrat party, then get legislation passed as part of a polarised party line.

In no state with a functional multi-party system does this happen, though. Radical parties barely make it into coalitions because they are unreliable partners.

At the moment, these radicals have infiltrated both the Democratic and the Republican parties (although the latter far more) and both parties are moving to the extreme. Instead of having small fringe parties calling for extremist legislature, now it's both main parties. Now, how's that for a better system?
