I spent the last... two years juggling between quitting and not quitting. Had my last cigarette in either late March or early April, can't quite remember. Cold Turkey or bust.

Cold turkey was the only thing that worked for me too, a couple of friends swore by patches and gum but all they did was remind me that I wasn't smoking. Grumping it out and keeping your hands busy über alles.

IIRC cold-turkey has the highest success rate of any method of quitting smoking. Nicotine patches are a scam.
