I also find it funny as a sort of jab at the idea of people buying paintings for absurd prices. I can appreciate that bit, at least.

That said, never really heard of Banksy before this. Then again, perhaps the stunt was a good one, if it's got more people talking about it.

How have you not heard of Banksy? He's like the fourth most well known artist after Da Vinci, van Gogh and Picasso (in no particular order).

Given who Banksy is it would frankly amaze me if the remains of the painting aren't worth more now.

Mate, the entire art industry is a sham. If it isn't collectors artificially inflating the value of artworks, it's criminals laundering money via purchases and donations. But Banksy made a name for himself. It's not like he got propped up by the elite from the get-go. He's only this famous, because of how much he resonates with people not only on an emotional level, but on a social and political level as well. Most artists nowadays can't say the same about their art, talented as they may be. So he deserves the credit.

That being said, I've seen some incredible work on the streets, on DeviantArt and elsewhere being sold for a pittance, meanwhile you've got Jackson Bollocks, solid squares on blank canvases and literal pieces of turd selling from thousands to hundreds of millions. That's why I don't take the contemporary art industry seriously at all, and would never associate them with an artist like Banksy. This was essentially a middle finger from him to them.

Banksy is just some trust fund asshole who is famous because a hanfull of other rich assholes decided he should be. Art prices are all inflated by arbitrary assessments that mean nothing. If I offered you an identical print to the one destroyed I would only get like $100 tops and that is mostly for the self shredding frame. Put it next to the million euro print though and it is indistinguishable.

Call it a great troll if you want. When working with people this dumb it has to be easy to do. After all shredding it apparently increased it's value. Real thinkers there. This isn't even new btw, self destructive art has been around for decades.
