A 28-year-old man playing a video game in his bedroom threw a fit, broke his headset, then picked up a gun and killed his mother, according to police in Ceres, Calif.
Matthew Nicholson stayed with his parents in a powder blue house with a basketball hoop over the garage door. It was a loving and open home, and 68-year-old Lydia Nicholson was the sort of mother who “wanted to see the best in people at all times,” her daughter told Fox 40.
But a police spokesman told the station that officers had visited the home after a fight between Nicholson and his parents once in the past six months, before Thursday, when they would arrive too late.

Nicholson was in his room that night playing a game, according to Ceres police, when something upset him and he began to yell. His mother went in to check on him, they started to argue, and Nicholson broke his headset.
He blamed his mother for this, police said, and threatened to kill her and his father, identified by Fox 40 as Loren Nicolson.
There was a gun in the house, police said, and so Nicholson tried to make good on his threat.” He came out yelling something about, ‘My headset is broken,’ ” police spokesman Greg Yotsuya told NBC affiliate KCRA. “Then grabbed a gun and started shooting.”

Guy clear has some sort of mental illness. No rational human being shoots their mother over a video game. If he's fit to stand trial then prosecute him to the fullest extent allowed by the law.

There is a disconnect between these two statements. If he's irrational and mentally ill, then he may not be legally responsible for his actions.

If he is not irrational and mentally ill, then yes, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

not exactly. The standard for too ill to stand trial is extremely high and numerous mental disorders do not exclude a defendant from standing trial for their misdeeds.

That's why I said if he's fit to stand trial. The bar to be deemed unfit to stand trial is extremely high and people who do have mental illness do not always meet the standard of unfit to stand trial.

I wouldn't mind being shot in the head right now after reading this. Why is it that everytime I start having faith in humanity again, something like this happens? Regardless of his mental health the fact remains that a woman got murdered by her adult son throwing a trumpertantrum. The scenario is just so stupid that it never should've happened in the first place. I'm an advocate for rehabilitation over punishment, but I'm beyond caring about what happens to him at this point.

I still don't get it how 'video games cause kids to be violent'. I've played enough games filled with violence and yet I would never kill anyone, let alone my mother.

saying that video games makes people violent is ridiculous. do movies make people violent? yes, the man who shot Reagan was inspired by a film as well as the Aurora shooter who sat 20 minutes into the Dark Knight Rises before he went and grabbed his guns. do books make people violent? they probably do in some form. so why should we single out videogames when there's potential for other forms of media to make people violent?
i'm not for the people who want to ruin everything in the pursuit of making things less violent, but these peoples' argument just makes no sense to me.

i'm no dr. phil, but I don't think this man is as mentally ill as he was just having an awful day and his mother arguing with him or whatever pushed him over the top. this in no way justifies his actions. he should rot in a cell, whether it's steel or padded.
