Abolish FPTP, introduce PS/STV or the like.

Sadly, I fear that nothing short of a coup or a revolution will bring an end to the current oligarchic state of affairs that rules the US. As for what we do when that (never) happens, we need to—at a minimum—torch the electoral college with extreme prejudice, ban gerrymandering, institute campaign finance reform and get rid of first-past-the-post voting.

Or we could do the last three things, turn the POTUS into a figurehead and institute a parliamentary system of government. Either one works, as far as I’m concerned.

I would change the voting system from first past the post to approval voting. The current voting system is rigged against third parties and mixed member proportional would seem to make it to easy for people with radical ideas to get into power.

I would also prohibit corporations from donating money for political parties and candidates.

Beyond that, I wouldn't know.

I think that "restore" is the wrong word, because the American political system was less democratic in the past.

Obviously we have to centralize the government so we all get to have the great effects of federal laws passed by Donald J Trump!

no thank you.

Democracy on a scale of three hundred million people is inherently unsustainable. Rewriting the constitution to decentralize is the only way.

Expand it to every president and I'd have the same opinion. Why should someone in Oregon have to listen to the demands of someone in Washington? One probably cares more about Oregon than the other.

Why should someone in one part of Oregon have to listen to the demands of someone in the state capital? Why should someone in one neighbourhood in a city have to listen to the demands of someone in a different neighbourhood in the same city? Why should someone on the north end of a street have to listen to the demands of someone on the south end of a street? Why should the people on the ground floor have to listen to the demands of the people upstairs?

First, we need to get rid of any pretenses of being anything but a non-self-destructing democratic state.
Ideally, abolishing the electoral college would be a start, followed by proportional representation.

Because there's a reasonable point where federalization works and where it doesn't work. This happens to be the point at which I think it would work.

You can find people that believe there should be no "listening", go to the more anarchist members of the Left-wing Discussion thread.

At the very least, get rid of the electoral college.

Ideally, I would have a Parliamentary system: each American votes for the members of the Senate and the House. The party with the most seats in the house will get to have their leader become President, while the party with the most seats in the Senate will have their Senate leader become Vice-President.

Even if California is all socialist and we added the college commies so we can get 40 million or so, it'd still make only 12.5% of the population who would profess such beliefs in the States.

I don't think they'd stand a chance unless they got the military on their side.
