Fidel Castro Dead at Age 90

Postby Shrillland » Fri Nov 25, 2016 10:37 pm

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-38114953

As if this year hadn't been eventful enough, Fidel Castro has just passed on. Personally, I don't see any significant change in Cuba happening right away as a result, but it might at least open a few minds up.

Your thoughts, NSG?

MOD EDIT: There will be no gloating, dancing in the streets, gleeful exclamations. If that sort of thing is all you have to contribute, don't bother.

Fidel Castro Reported Dead, Age 90

Postby Yumyumsuppertime » Fri Nov 25, 2016 10:40 pm

The BBC is announcing the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro.[/url] A famed revolutionary leader and the last of the Cold War dictators, Fidel Castro's legacy will be a point of controversy for many years to come among historians, scholars, and pundits. After overthrowing the dictator Batista in 1959, Castro and his brother Raul set up a Soviet satellite state in Cuba, and was the center of international attention during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961.

Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and in the face of a decades long boycott by the United States, Cuba managed to survive, first under Fidel Castro, and more recently under his brother Raul. Despite recent diplomatic overtures between the U.S. and Cuban governments, Castro remained a fierce critic of his neighbors to the north to the very end.

This thread will be heavily patrolled. Spirited discussion of differing points of view is encouraged, gloating, trolling, and flaming are not.

What say ye?

Was about to post it. Hopefully a majority here can agree that even though he was arguably a bad person who was bad for Cuba, that we can be respectful after his death and not gloat. Death is death. Condolences to those who cared for him deeply.

Somehow I think both Castro brothers would find "The king is dead, long live the king!" distasteful in the extreme.

Yes. Having the support of the people and aiding them in defeating an evil American puppet dictator is evil. He was a hero of anti imperialism.

And 2016 takes another. I guess Castro had been old and sick for ages, so it's not exactly surprising ... but still, this year is bloodthirsty.

I hope that this will lead to improving relations between the USA and Cuba.

He receives little sympathy from me, tbh; however, with that being said, Rest in Peace Fidel Castro.

:(

While I 100% understand the bad things he's done, Castro has to be given credit to some great changes in Cuba. It was however, his time, and him having been through so much I'd say it's somewhat remarkable he made it that long. Let's hope Cuba continues to prosper, and that as it opens to the world it is not corrupted by capitalism and corporatism.
