It was worse in some details and not worse in others. Social media is one area that causes political discourse to be much worse now. Brush fires grow into raging forest fires in moments in today's world yet the firemen are still just as slow as always.

On the wildfire thing, it's common practice to sometimes let the fires burn and only control it if it gets to out of control. Forest fires aren't inherently bad for the environment, after all.
