Wage gap

Granted it's satire, but I think it's a concise way to bring awareness to the wage gap issue with women in the workplace. Discuss? I have an anxious feeling that many will dispute it.

I see a lot of responses on here that refuse to acknowledge the wage gap, and give alternative reasons for pay disparity based on sex; none of which are too compelling. In the end it seems that women stay quiet about it, and refuse to take action. For those that agree with the video, what can women do to fix this gap, and move towards equality in the labor market?

Mainly they need to do, en masse, what men do - sacrifice family and personal time for work, work lots of overtime, and take on dangerous jobs that come with hazard pay (things like mining, oil platform working, etc).

When you adjust for those factors, the pay gap is about 3 cents on the dollar. Still problematic, but overall the smaller part of the problem.

Alternatively, we could wake up and see work isn't everything and try to liberate men from societally enforced workaholic syndrome.

"Women" alone cannot do anything. "Society" (which means both men and women) MUST act to fix the gap. It's not only demeaning to women, it's detrimental to the society as a whole as it destroys meritocracy.

I have noticed that even in countries which mandate a positive right to non-discrimination, and equal pay for the same job, there's a wage gap between men and women. Quite often it happens also because the wage increases with the years in the same workplace: but the average woman employee is much less likely to have spent the same amount of years as the average men employee. That's because employers expect women, especially young women, to become mothers at some point in their life, which means maternity leaves before and after birth, and more requests for time off to care for the kids. Which means that it's rather common for employers to prefer to hire men - which results in men having longer careers in the same place, hence higher wages even for the same job.

The issue here lies in a social tradition about mothers providing most, if not all, of the care for kids. The best way to level the playing field there would be mandating BOTH maternity and paternity leaves, for the same amount of months. And coupling this with an extensive and inclusive system of affordable (or even state-paid) daycare and kindergartens.

I think we need to expose to men that there's a condition in Japan referred to as Karoshi or death by overwork.

I'm not sure it would work. My father took up eBay about a decade ago, even with his 46 hour work week.

That's a really good idea- regulating leave for both sexes would help even things out, considering women are discriminated for gestating new life

I don't think that would be enough to close the gap as there's still job choice disparities along with hours worked, but that would be a solution for salaried workers.

One point to consider is that men don't get paid the same as other men in the same industry.
In my office it's an unwritten rule to not talk about how much you get paid, cause it's highly likely that the fella next to you will be paid differently, despite having the same job.

The real question is why businesses are passing up a supposed 23% discount on labor costs.

Because you may need to hire additional workers if more than one woman is on leave wiping out gains?

if the wage gap was businesses would exclusively hire women, but it isn't so that doesn't happen.

There are so many factors to take into account regarding the wage gap, such as the fact men are far more likely to die or be injured on the job, 100% less likely to request maternity leave etc.

I agree that this should be discussed. However i think one thing that is important is to have encouragement of people who are in positions of authority to spea on these issues to know what they're talking about. It's too easy to get the impression that it's only about the actual paycheck someone gets. So for the ordinary person living in the Wesst, th issue can be confusing and frustrating--after all if you're a manager or personnel director or something you know it's illegal to pay someone a different wage for the same job based on their sex or race or whatever.

I also think examining what women generally want in terms of work needs to be looked at more closely. It should I think be equally fair for a woman to want to work as an architecht, start her own business, or work from home or whatever, work from home or live a more traditional married life. I think this is only a problem if the women's own choices are treated unfairly by a general standard.

Make career choices in a manner which is consistent with greater career progression, at which point the pay gap virtually disappears; quite notably choosing not to have a child and/or partner appears to be particularly effective?

The larger gap still raises questions, for instance should women be penalized for giving birth.

Oh it exists in the West, but I would say it is only occasionally because of unfair sexism. It's as far as I know because of women's choices. So for example if women are less interested in what are called the 'hard' sciences that should not necessarily mean that they are actively discouraged across the board. However continuing to research why people make the choices they do is important.

No, but the policy initiative on that would mandate paid parental leave for both parents in equal amounts.

They're not penalized for giving birth, they're penalized for not having equal experience in the field as they'd if they weren't responsible for caring for the baby; much the same way that being a carer for a sick relative will lower your earning potential. I imagine if the woman wanted to take couple of days to give birth, and then never take additional break from work because of the child, her earning potential wouldn't be too distinct from that of women without a child.

Then "wage gap" would be a bit of a misnomer, and "earnings gap" would be the more accurate terminology.

Why bother arguing about the inequality of wages and not question why anyone must work to live comfortably in the first place?
