Language Thread

Postby Parhe » Wed Apr 13, 2016 4:21 pm

Native language is English. Technically, I learned Korean first, but I picked up English in mid elementary and has gotten very bad at Korean. I am very interested in learning ASL, and although I took some classes in college and was very good at conversation (better at it then Korean for a brief period), I forgot most of it. I am interested in improving myself in both ASL and Korean, but I have mainly been focusing on Korean. Although I do plan to go to this monthly get-together in the area to practice my ASL.
Hey, it is Parhe :D I am always open to telegrams.
I know it is a Work-In-Progress, but I would love it if y'all looked at my new factbook and gave me some feedback!

Personally, though, I prefer the traditional script. Mainly because its more fun to write.

To be honest, I also prefer traditional a lot more, for a variety of reasons. It's also a lot prettier.

Simplified is not as aesthetically pleasing - I guess that, along with trad's greater complexity, is why Chinese leaders still write their signatures using trad?

Netherlandish is my favourite language, followed by German. I really like my own language, though this is highly likely entirely because it's the language I just so happened to have grown up with. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoy reading about the history of the Netherlandish language and regard as a serious ambition to become a "Neerlandicus" (Netherlandish language scientist). I am currently learning German because I am a big fan of the German language as well, mainly due to music and theatre. Luckily, we have easy access to German television (ARD/ZDF), so I occasionally watch the Tagesschau or ZDF Heute, beside general programming (though they could do with less Krimis, if you ask me >.>)

Same there with you about all you said. I'm a native speaker of Dutch as well, and like the language, together with German because we're engrained with it.

Currently, my languages are:

• Dutch (native)
• English (non-native, but at native level)
• German (conversational, decently)
• French (a bit)

Currently I'm learning Italian as well, and occassionally, learn Latin to myself. I intend on learning Greek soon as well.

Learn Italian. Granted I'm biased, but yea... Learn Italian. It's supposedly the most basic and easy to learn of the Romance/Latin languages.

Thanks for your advise. My thoughts are similar but I had no experience that's why I'm hesitating.

No need to be sad. It's not that difficult to learn how to switch to the simplified script.

Here's a bit of an advice, if you speak Korean, Japanese, Chinese or other Asian languages, learning another Asian language should not be hard. Otherwise, if you native language is Latin-rooted, it it could be tough due to pronunciation differences, but just keep trying, you'll eventually get it

That could be; I'm not a Chinese national, though, so I'm not sure.

It's also fun to see how the traditional script corresponds to kanji.

Learn latin.
It's better. And with it you can probably get by with the rest of the romance languages, at least decently.

For me, I'm learning Latin, English is my native language, and I can speak kinda fluent Hebrew, though I've taken a break from learning it.
It appears I'm an INTP-T. You're not gonna get much more about me.

you really need to expand your options beyond Europe and a couple of Asians

As for me I speak English and a couple of Polynesian languages (NZ and Cook Island Maori, very basic Tahitian and Tokelauan (very rusty now though)). I am learning Bahasa Melayu and am considering Cham and possibly Thai later. I also want to learn Kernowek and proper Scots Gaelic and have considered some of the French dialects including langue d'oc and brezhoneg and also Fleming. Farsi Persian intrigues me too as does Turkish.

oh and the native American languages intimidate me - those things are crazy complex

English - native
Korean - definitely not up to native level but something lol
Japanese - intermediate, maybe like JLPT 4 level (I memorized all the vocab for it lol) but really idk I have a much easier time reading and writing it than actually listening and understanding it
Chinese - one year of a high school level class with a lot of ditching
French - bad

Indonesian - Saya tidak berbicara bahasa indonesia

Chinese grammar is actually really simple - learning to speak it isn't much of a hassle, I think. Indonesian also seems pretty simple, but I don't plan on really learning it anytime soon. French grammar is sort of annoying.

I am a native speaker of Latinamerican Spanish, although I understand Regio (Northern Mexican dialect, my mother is from there), Panamanian (I am "Panamanian" but I never bothered to speak the dialect) and Venezuelan (a lot of friends are Venezuelan). I want to learn Peninsular Spanish (Iberian Spanish) as an "upgrade".

French is mandatory in my school for some reason and I have been struggling 8 years with that to no avail, and I'm both busy and bad managing my time so I only managed to pull out Duolingo for three days. I want to learn Swiss French though, as it is easier for me as a Spanish speaker than Metropolitan French.

People in the US primarily seem to learn just Spanish and French.

Schools here are trying to have more Mandarin classes, but there aren't many people who try to learn Chinese here on NSG, I've noticed. The only Chinese speakers are largely native speakers, although there are people who've learned it such as USS Monitor and some others.

Japanese tends to have a lot more popularity here on NS, I've noticed - the only native speaker I know on NS is Cerillium but there's a lot of people who are interested in learning it, and have learned a bit.
