This cannot be happening. What the hell happened to our country?

The worst global recession since the Second World War coupled with a major political scandal. That's the root cause of all this. The SNP and the UKIP are just riding the wave of public discontent.

if only we had voted for a government that would have brought us a fast recovery instead of going for austerity, huh? what a shame. at least people have learned their lesson from last time, and the party that poses by far the most danger to the union is out of the running.

Any Lib Dems who want their party to actually survive and regrow will hope Clegg loses his seat. Because if he wins and takes them into another Tory agreement, they're boned.

Will the LibDems dissolve? Maybe, it's unlikely, but somewhat plausible.

It could split. There will always be a party that represents the Liberal tradition in the UK. Perhaps people like Tim Farron, possibly Cable, could go on as a centrist Social Liberal type party, where as Clegg if he survives could run a classical liberal party that follows the Tories.

The Social Liberalism that people like Farron represents is firmly in the centre. Since Clegg wouldn't have the baggage of the social liberal/left liberal factions of the lib dems anymore, his theoretical party could go full on Gladstonian/Classical Liberal like he'd probably ideally like.
